Thank you for being so kind to my foolish mistakes on this radio. It was my first radio restoration and I knew the alignment was off from the beginning but didn't want to tackle that so I put it away. I always mark where tubes come from now but I was naive back then. Most radios and schematics show a tube layout but try as I might I could not find one for this.

Mr. Carlson's experience with tubes and tube equipment really shows. Not many people could look at the tubes and immediately know that they weren't in the right place and then know which ones to expect in the various stages of the radio.

i work as a service technichian. in my school i had a lot of electronics and automation but since then i never really had to do electronic troubelshooting. i like this videos and the chanel i finally get a grasp of it how to do it in a real world application. thanks :)

I had a shortwave radio growing up in my village. To boost up the reception, I would hook up the radio antenna to plumbing pipes. I absolutely enjoyed the late night dramas on BBC and Deutschwelle. Golden days 😀

When I was a kid in the 90s old tube radios and TVs were a common find here in Bulgaria, I had a few models that I listened with every day. Such a wonderful feeling to see the tubes glow and to hear stations from across the globe. One thing I liked the most? The tube models and their positions were printed on the back. When KZfaq recommended this channel, I had no other choice but to subscribe. So interesting and educational.

Paul, you are doing the world a great service by bringing countless electronic items from way back when back to life. Not only that, you show how it's done, and you even teach others how to do what you do. Without you and others like you, the world would soon forget about the early days of electronics. We assembled a Heathkit Superhet as freshman in High School, 1964, electronics class. Still remember the amazement that it worked. Ended up going into the Navy advanced electronics program and on into submarine service. Thanks for giving us your videos, I for one would like (need) to see an alignment video. This takes me back to my days on the farm in the 1950's when I used to watch my father as he overhauled engines to make extra money from the neighbors. He taught me a lot about mechanics, and, of course how to farm. One thing he always drilled in about working with farm equipment was to insure that all the screws and bolts were tight before you began a days work. So, for example, if you were going to mow, you went over the mower with a wrench and screwdriver and tightened everything so it would not work loose as you mowed the fields. When I first began tinkering with radios in the early 1960's after we moved to town and got electric power, I transferred that learning and messed up the radios I worked on by doing the tighten the screws thing after opening up the cabinet. I quickly learned that this advice does not transfer to electronics. I guess it takes a few screw ups, especially if you are working, as I did with no advice from anyone in the know such as is available today with the many how to's available on KZfaq.

RCA model 65X1 from 1948. Tube compliment : 50L6/35Z5/12SA7/12SK7/12SQ7 . From the label that was on the bottom, " For Finest Performance USE ONLY GENUINE RCA RADIO TUBES" I found Mr. Carlson's ability to find tubes put in wrong places fascinating and I hope whomever did that never turned the radio on! But that person did mis-tune the radio and screwed it up! Definitely needs an alignment. Work was only half way finished. It would make sense to put in a polarized plug, switch the "hot" side to the on/off switch, and add a fuse on the hot wire coming into the radio. Make it safe!

Yes please Mr. Carlson do the full alignment. I have a radio here my grandparents bought in 1956 right after their wedding. After a full electronic restoration (done with all the wisdom I was able to collect thanks to people like you, uncle Doug and Brad the guitologist on KZfaq) it still has a few mechanical and alignment related issues I'd like to address to get it to full working order again after it spent most of its life forgotten in an attic. It might be a European model but I am absolutely certain you can give me the slight bit more of insight that I need to get this piece of family history back to its former glory.

Mr Carlson I built a 7 transistor radio in an electronics course at a Community Collage. The kit had RF and IF coils, alignment took patience. We used the strongest AM station in North Texas WBAP 820 AM to tune the radio.

Full alignment PLEASE! Thank you for sharing your "back to the basics" troubleshooting technique then demonstrating simple ways to prove basic functionality. After watching you "peak-by-ear" I am going to take a working radio and play around with the adjustments to see for myself what happens. I would NOT have dreamed of such tweaking before seeing you do it. I find myself saying "Yeah, I can do that" at every step in all your videos - KEEP IT COMING!!!

To those that feel they have to give a thumbs down to what a lot of us see as PRICELESS content, can I suggest we all would be better served by your sharing your POSITIVE comments and additions, or dare I suggest posting your own video for us to “see how it’s really done”. Another great video Paul! I look forward to your videos along with Joe Smith’s videos( multimeter robustness testing mostly). You two guys have the best EE chops on KZfaq. You both design and build your own test equipment, can just look at the circuit and find the issue with little testing, reverse engineer circuits, you both are very good at mechanical work and engineering also. I was a mechanical engineer/toolmaker/CNC programmer most of my career but always had interest in electronics since I was a kid. Being a gigging guitar player for the past 40 years I dove back into that pool when all the good old techs I trusted started to retire and unfortunately pass away. A lot of books before the internet on the subject and these days videos from guys like you and Joe have gotten me to the point of being the guy in my area that most bring their tube amps to for repairs. The last few years I have gotten into old tube radios too. Just wanted to say thank you and others with amazing skills for sharing your knowledge. I’m also a subscriber to your Patreon channel and love the projects and the details of schematics and parts list. Keep the videos coming!!

Yep love these old radios. A tune-up .Wipe the Dust off and it will run for another hundred years. And in the cooler weather it'll help warm the house up a little.

I would like to see the alignment. At present, know just enough to get myself into trouble so will continue to watch your videos and build on your knowledge. We used to "fix" our radios and tvs by pulling out all the tubes and going to the grocery store which had a tube tester and tubes for sale. 99% of time I was successful. I have Crosley, Arvin, radios as well as others. My Crosley clock radio which i "repaired" in 1960 is still working well but clock quit about 20 years ago. Would like to get it back up and running so am also learning to work on watches and clocks. Thanks ever so much for your producing these wonderful informative videos.

Such a clean set, thanks for the reminder to taking notes. I find that some tube identification numbers rub off the glass envelopes so it's mine habit to pull one tube at a time and light mark the with a pencil.
