6 Ways to Recover PDF Files on Windows 11/10/7: bit.ly/406Y380
Right-click the PDF, choose Open With -- Choose default program (or Choose another app in Windows 10).
Choose Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Acrobat DC in the list of programs, and then do one of the following:
(Windows 7 and earlier) Select Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.
(Windows 8) Select Use this app for all .pdf files.
(Windows 10) Select Always use this app to open .pdf files.
Click the Search icon.
Type “Reader” (no quotes), then hit Enter.
Go to the top menu and click Edit.
Once you’re inside the Edit menu, look for Preferences and click it.
A new window will show up. Click Security (enhanced).
Under the Sandbox Protection options, uncheck the box beside “Enable Protected Mode at startup”.
You will be asked if you want to continue with the changes. Click Yes.
Reasons behind PDF not opening in Windows 10
If you seem to have trouble opening PDF files on your Windows computer, it is likely that it has something to do with a recent Adobe Reader or Acrobat installation/update. On the other hand, PDF not opening in Windows 10 can also be caused by errors brought by an operating system upgrade. I am desperate! How can I open the PDF files on a disc to read them? Please help. I need them for my drum lessons. I have Windows 8.

*None of these methods worked. It is associated with the correct app/program (Adobe Acrobat X Pro) on my Microsoft Windows 10 Pro system, and when I double-click the pdf documents (that I've checked are not corrupted bc they open in MS Edge just fine), nothing at all happens. Same when I right-click and choose "open with..." Adobe Acrobat X Pro. Adobe Acrobat X Pro user interface doesn't open, either. Very frustrating that Adobe Acrobat just stopped working. Thank you!*

I left for lunch today and came back and now my Surface Book 2 says it can not find the .pdf file I am clicking on. It also says it cannot find Acrobat DC. I reinstalled and regedit remove Acrord32.exe and nothing works. I have never had this problem before in 20 years.

Yes, indeed, the number of companies (banks, IRS, etc) that download a PDF file without attaching the *.PDF extension is astounding. No, I have my Win 10 64 bit computer set so it ALWAYS shows file extensions.

Didn't help. There isn't one pfd file I can open now on my computer. They all say the same thing that it could not open the file because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged. I had no problem with any of these files previously. Makes no sense?

Tried the repair Reader DC fix. That did not work. Tried the uninstall, download latest version routine, that didn't work. Tried an off brand PDF file opener, that did work. Conclusion: As of Jan 28, 2020, Adobe Reader DC is officially a "damaged goods software", straight out of box, or fresh from download. Why Adobe does not care about this is a mystery to me.
