Fix for low flow on your refrigerator water line installation

If your refrigerator water line installation is giving you low water pressure I’ll show you the proper way to DIY install a refrigerator water line shutoff valve. I’ll be taking off the self piercing saddle valve and installing a full flow Shark Bite ¼” quarter turn compression valve. This is going to give you faster water flow and larger ice cubes than a saddle valve will.

Before you turn on the water to your fridge line. Disconnect the 1/4 that sticks out the wall and connects to your fridge and put a 5 gallon bucket to let the water run for a little bit that would clear out some debri and air out of the line. Then shut off the water at the valve and reconnect the 1/4 line back the fridge. Empty out the water bucket and change the filter in the fridge if it needs to be changed. I prefer the compression fittings over the shark bite. Good video.

Good tips. Thanks for posting. The fridge we have the filter is $50 and the computer will shut the ice maker down after a certain number of cycles. I went with a dummy cartridge and ignore the 'not filtering' message. We have a whole house triple filter. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7uBqdR-t5nDeo0.html

You mentioned compression fitting over shark bite. I can’t seem to find a compression tee with a valve…only shark bites.

You may have to go to a plumbing supply house or online. Big Blue and the Borg cater to homeowners not pros like you. Ace or True Value may have them.

Very helpful! Thanks for your time and all of the detail. Sharkbite is a great new tool. It was great to remove that corroded saddle valve, and now the flow (I upgraded to thicker tubing, too) is great.

I'd clean the pipe before I cut it so you don't have to wrestle with the emery cloth. otherwise, nice job!

Just to note the measuring tool for sharkbite also has a de burr for copper pipe.

This was my original ideal to do this! They sent me the specialist from home Depot and he said, there is no need to do this, it should still be enough flow! Lmao I should have stuck to my gut and common sense.

Those piercing saddle valves should be illegal. You'll notice a drastic improvement.

Those sharkbites are prone to failure over time. I reccommend using either a pro-press fitting if you have the ability to buy or rent the crimp jaw tool, if not, then of course there is no equal to a proper solder joint.

I agree with you that soldering is the best but I've never seen in person or real examples of sharkbites failing.

Shark bites leak when not installed correctly. Just like a solder joint or pro press. If you're not proficient at soldering or don't have a $4,000 tool, sharkbites are the way to go. I've never had one leak even a drop!

Got Fisher and Paykal. Both ice maker and cold water dispenser are pathetic. Wasted money on these bells and whistles. Old fashioned water bottle and ice trays are the go.

How much of the pipe did you cut to fit in the sharkbite I'm doing the same job.. When you cut the pipe in half what was the measurement of copper you removed?

Maybe 3/4". It depends on how much movement you have in the pipes. I just cut enough out to get rid of the deformation caused by the piercing valve.

Yup.. that's my water flow. 47 seconds to fill 12 oz glass... too slow. My valve at the pipe looks similar to the saddle valve but it is soldered in. So, not sure how big the pipe hole is for water flow. I can't do this fix.

I replaced mine but the flow is the same... Any ideas what could be wrong? I have a new refrigerator that's only 4 months old

Check the flow coming out of the line right before the refrigerator. If the flow is good the problem is in the fridge. Some refrigerators have a filter that can clog. Mine is also newer and the filters are $60! I was able to get a 'dummy' filter that has no restrictions and won't clog.

No but there's usually enough flex to get them in.

A bad filter manifold can be to blame for little to no water flow.

Start planning on replacing them. Those galvanized pipes continually deteriorate from the inside. They get mineral and rust buildup on the inside and eventually clog completely or leak.
