FIX for Scaletrains SDL39 Sloping pilots!

Hello model railroad friends in this video we are fixing an issue on the newly released Museum Quality Scaletrains EMD SDL39! I've been waiting for this HO scale model for almost my entire life and when I saw the issues I was heartbroken...however my buddies Ben and Chris didn't panic (unlike me) and came up with a solution. I quick made this video to help out the Scaletrains Community and SAVE MY SDL39!!!

Thats model railroeding, models are not perfect sometimes even with best manufacturers exspensive models,great simple fix👍

Brilliant! I had confidence a solution would be out there. A big thanks to Ben, Chris & Andy for sharing…clearly the sky isn’t falling. Nice simple fix and another well done video.

Thanks William - there are other issues with the Model - I think I'm going to do an "Honest Review" of the locomotive as a result of the "triage."

@@AndyDorsch If there are other issues other than what you showed us than the unit will go back if I have bought it. Seems that the factory needs a kick in the pants.

For a second I thought the sloping pilot was a rapido model! Scaeltrains SDL39 is a beautiful model by any standard. That is a great tip!! Thank you.

Yeah, little bit of a bummer but it goes to show that with even a little elbow grease you can save a nice model!

Great solution! Had mine fixed in seconds. Not gonna lie, I don't mind making tweaks on things to perfect them. All part of the fun of model railroading for me.

The very first thing I recommend is to register your SDL39 locomotive(s) on the ScaleTrains website. Next, contact support and email them with all your order information and add a picture or two showing the issues. I did all of this and got an email back after mentioning this fix. The reply noted this was not a good fix and ScaleTrains would address the issue with a simple permanent solution since it put stress on a weak point on the shell. I think they are more worried that inexperienced modelers will over stress and break it off doing this fix. I can only surmise this. I have 20 years of kitbashing experience an see this as a very good and valid permanent fix. I also see where it could lead to a broken off pilot in inexperienced hands. I may use this fix on my two units unless ScaleTrains has an easier one. We will wait and see. Please take the time to register the warranty.

Yes but you spent a good deal of money for the company to produce a model that didn't need any tweaking.

thanks for this great tip!! I hope mine isn't warped, but I will a fix if it is :) I am going to try this on my SD40-T2 right now since it is warped too

Good luck, I hope it is in good condition when you get it. I have the Tunnel Motors too, mine aren't warped (thank god!) I will say, however, they are smooth runners!

I had two ST SP SD40T-2s with warped walkways. I just mailed them back to ST and they gave me new ones.

@@AndyDorsch is this a manufacturer issue with all these units? It’s a shame that you had to fix it. Hopefully Scaletrains will address it. at least it was a simple fix anyhow.

@@Crookedriverandeasternrr it is appearing to be a widespread issue. My locomotive has other issues right out of the box. It does run very well however! So that's a plus!

@@AndyDorsch that’s unfortunate. Especially for museum quality. I hope it’s not going to be their norm! Scaletrains is an amazing company and I’d hate to see the Fall to lower standards like some of the other companies

The 500s we're one of my favorite locos when l worked for the WC. I was not an engineer or trainman.

I got to take a tour of Shops at NFDL, saw an SDL39 on jacks getting overhauled. Never forget that day.

If I am going to spend that kind of money, I think that this needs to be fixed bu the manufacturer before I get it. It is going back to someone...

What did Ben "one of the best modeler railroaders out there" do about the 3-rail O gauge gap between the frame and trucks? Looks like a lifted 4x4.

We haven't figured that one out yet. Most of the outrage seemed to be around pilot...maybe ST should put us on the payroll 😉

Nathan, Jury is still out on that one. May add styrene to the frame to conceal it better. Because I model 2001 I have a few modifications to make to these to make them era specific but that will be a while. Too many irons in the fire.
