In this video, I demonstrate how to reflow a GPU on a 2010 or 2011 MacBook Pro with a failing GPU.

i had success with mbp 15" late 2011 with amd gpu. Applied flux as you did, heated up till i saw flux boiling, let to cool and rinse with %99 isopropyl alcohol. it works. But i disable the gpu anyway.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate the temperature and timing advice. I think the solder paste bubbling was the key to knowing if you are heating things up enough. I used 350 degC for 5 minutes and then 450 degC for an additional 5 minutes at full air flow but my hot air station isn't as fancy as yours. Seems to have rectified the problem, at least for now. One problem is the 17" models UEFI boot isn't 100% compatible with modern operating systems. This model was prior to the UEFI standard being finalized and Apple was trying to make this laptop compatible with Windows 7 MBR booting in bootcamp. As a result some of the hardware, like the GPU and sound card have physical hardware addresses are not really UEFI compatible. Windows 10 and some versions of Linux when booting MBR seem to be compatible, but as soon as you go UEFI booting some devices will partially or completely fail. Even Open Core Legacy Patcher has problems with the latest versions of MacOS getting the hardware right. Software compatibility with operating systems, especially for browsers, has changed a great deal the last few years and I have to question the value of reviving these old models unless you are willing to go to Linux MBR or go through the long convoluted process of installing Windows 10-1903 from the DVD.

Hey dude, great video! I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, and upon startup, I get the horizontal lines on the screen (telltale sign of failed GPU), the status bar gets to about 50%, then the screen goes gray, and it power cycles. Seems like it will go on infinitely if I don’t force shut down. With a failed GPU, will the computer keep power cycling on its own? Is there any way to get it to boot up?

Looking to get my 2011 MacBook Pro GPU fixed,, what do you recommend
@joshuafox93656 ай бұрын
If you are looking to have the GPU removed, reballed and resoldered, I would recommend sending your MacBook to Rossmann Repair Group Inc.

How long did it last? I'm guessing not long

It varies. I have had reflows like this work for a week and I have also have an Imac with a similar chip that has so far lasted me about 3 years after a reflow.

Hi, is it the same to repair the cpu?
@joshuafox93656 ай бұрын
No. For the CPU, I would recommend BGA rework. If you do not have the equipment, I would recommend sending the laptop to Rossmann Repair Group Inc.

Itnis prooven that solder fails between die and gpu board. Not between gpu assy and mainboard. Pointless
