I stumbled in here with an old AE-1 Program that has visibly deteriorated light seals. Not sure yet if they need replacing, but I'm pretty confident a test roll will show some light damage. This video has been wonderfully instructional. I never would have thought of the IPA trick with the adhesive. I'm pretty confident that, with this channel's help, I can get this camera into good working order.

If anyone else out there is like me, and more likely to cut your finger off than cut the foam in a straight line, I found a paper-cutter at my local Staples store that will cut the 1 and 2mm foam straight as an arrow. The unit I found was a CARL RBT-12N and cost about $12(US). All you do is place the foam sheet in the cutter with the backing facing you (it helps to mark a cut line on the backing sheet). With the 2mm foam a little "trimming" was required with my exacto knife as it didn't cut quite all the way through all the foam for the length of the cut, but it was very small and the foam came out straight.

Isn't the light seal foam for the mirror just a cushion and not really a seal? It's my understanding that Canon assumed the users head/eye over the view finder was adequate to block any light leaking from there or you're supposed to use the little cover they provided for those times when your head wasn't there (my Canon EOS 60D DSLR came with a little cover attached to the camera strap that the user is supposed to put over the view finder when not using the view finder). Also, wouldn't it be better to remove the screen before removing the old foam?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 10 жыл бұрын
The foam in the mirror box mainly serves as a cushion. The viewfinder screen is delicate, so if you choose to remove it do so with care.

I enjoy and appreciate all of your "How To" videos. In this video, you suggest isopropyl alcohol as your recommended solvent. I've been using denatured alcohol as it seems to work more quickly....are you aware of any reasons why I shouldn't use it?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 7 жыл бұрын
There should not be any reason for concern. However, it seems to leave a little more of a residue and some might think the smell to be stronger. Of course when using any solvent in a new application always check for compatibility.

Very nice. I've replaced seals in several old cameras successfully, but I have a few that still leak light. When you replace yours, what do you do at the counter reset tab? I've been trying to trim the seal as close to them as I can, but should I just run the seal strip over the tab?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 10 жыл бұрын
Leaving a small gap for the counter engagement tab is fine. If you run a continuous strip it would eventually tear out. If you still have light leaks check the latch side of the door and the corners.

What is the width (I'm guessing in millimeters since the Camera was manufactured in Japan) of the upper and lower film door groove seals and how critical is that measurement (my "eyeball" measurement says the grooves are 2mm wide)? Also, how far around the corners at each end of the grooves should the light seal go. Based on what I see of the old seals Canon did not carry the seals all the way around and to the end of the grooves. It looks like the material ends about 3-4 mm before that. What are the dimensions on the two mirror damper pieces?

Hello there, from the look of it you seem really knowledgeable and I would like to ask you if you have ever came across to a canon A1 where the mirror is not moving at all when I press the shutter button I can ear a small clicking sound, I have tried everywhere but unfortunately no one had the same issue. I would much appreciate your help, if you could at least advise. Thanks, Adriano
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 7 жыл бұрын
The click would indicate the camera is trying to start the release sequence. More than likely a mechanical malfunction preventing the mirror from rising. Try removing the bottom cover and comparing the release sequence of a working camera to the broken one. If the issue is not in the lower mechanism accessible from the bottom then further disassembly might be needed to discover the issue.

The thicker foam is generally used at the door hinge, but depending on the quality of foam, if you can feel a little resistance from the foam compressing as the door is closed the thinner will do the job.

All you Americans seem to use 'Isopropyl Alcohol' to dissolve gooey seals BUT here in England I asked around my town and nowhere in any Pharmacies did they have any -- in one I was told you 'have to have a special Licence to get it' -- I use Lighter Fluid instead.
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 жыл бұрын
As you discovered, lighter fluid (naphtha) will work well in removing the goo left behind from the degraded light seal. Mineral spirits can also be used for the removal of old light seals. However, neither of these should be used as a complete substitute for isopropyl alcohol as a cleaning agent in classic camera repair.
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 жыл бұрын
With mineral spirits probably heading the list as the most volatile it is not the first choice as a light seal goo remover.

@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Lujano You can try saturating a cleaning swab with distilled water and rubbing in motion following the concentric circles of the focus screen. The focus screen of the Canon AE-1is not replaceable from inside the mirror box. Among other things, the top cover along with the upper flex circuit and prism need to be remove to gain access to the focus screen of the AE-1.

Well it sounds live maybe you have answered your own question as to the cause. You can use the careful judicious application of alcohol to remove the sticky residue. @FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Lay Each strip of foam seal should have the adhesive neutralized before trying to position the strip. Otherwise the strip will stick every where but where you want it. After applying the alcohol to neutralize the adhesive, you will have a fairly short window to position the seal strip. If the adhesive starts to get sticky before the seal is completely positioned use a saturated cleaning swab to reapply the alcohol to the remaining strip.

The strips need to be cut to size, and when using seal material as shown the adhesive side needs to be temporarily neutralized with alcohol. This allows for smooth insertion into the grove. 2mm light density works nicely for the mirror bumper and hinge seal. 1mm medium density works well for the door groove seal. When cutting door grove seals always cut a least 1mm wide if the foam strip is cut less than 1mm it will curl and be even more difficult to work with. The door groove probably measures out to approximately 1.2 mm wide.
