This old tiller was languishing away in the back storage lot. Then came the day when it met its fate, either till again, or get turned into razor blades. Luckily for this old machine, it was returned to usefulness once again instead of getting the VIP tour of the scrapyard...

That's a real man's rototiller right there. Gotta love the "simplicity through total disregard for safety" design and engineering on this thing. FZ would approve.

I have the same tiller as that except mine has the K-91 Kohler engine upgrade. I got it second hand many years ago and used it in our garden for years. I lent it to a friend and he stored it outside, wrapped in plastic. You can imagine the condition it was in when I got it back. I have every intention of getting it back in very good running condition. The patina on mine is very similar to yours only a little rustier. Safety? you don't need no stinkin' safety when it's going forward. It's not like its going to back up on you. I was very happy to see another video from you. I love working on this stuff.

The crankshaft end in the starter clutch is rusty and dry causing that harrendous screech. 5 ho Briggs fuel pump diaphragms are a dime a dozen.

I am in New Zealand. This would sell secondhand for about $450 if going. $200 if not going. Several reasons: self sufficiency has grown alot esp since covid. Masport make them here but a 6 month wait list. $1250 new. New name brands, eg the Stihl is $1600. Secondly the shipping charges are 10x precovid, so the only ones are from stock pre covid. There was a Mantis reseller here, but they have paused for now.

Yah the famous recoil squeal lol you need to take that one way starter that hold the flywheel on off then take it apart an clean the balls that are inside an sand paper the shaft clean the it back together with a very very lil shot of blaster . Never use grease or oil inside then because it will couse the balls to stick inside the starter housing an won’t grab . I found out the hard way when I was at the lawnmower shop. When them things start squealing an catch you off guard it will scare the shit out of yah an it’s so loud it is nails on a chock board x69 louder an painful 😂 another truck fir them Briggs starter bearings there is a felt inside the end of the square thing we’re you see that hole what u sprayed well suppose to be you can pull a very very small drop of tranny fluid on the felt that will help lube the starter housing for the crank shaft

Love the safety of old tools man. My dad had a Skill brand jigsaw that just had an on and off slide switch. I also used to use my dad's tiller when I was a kid very similar to that, but it was a Craftsman. Worked the same, lock that drive in place and hold on cause she'd keep going till it ran outta gas. All this modern safety junk has taken the excitement and challenge out of using power tools and lawn and garden equipment. I mean using an old chainsaw was kinda exciting. None of that anti kickback stuff, or the new style chains they use on consumer type saws to help prevent it. Of course back when what was a seatbelt right. Or those stupid looking bike helmets they want kids to wear now. When I was a kid if we got hold of motor cycle helmets or something it just made us do stupider stunts because we were indestructible with those helmets on. Football helmets counted too. Sorry for the long comment but I mowed my big ass lawn today and that requires many beers to accomplish. Have a good Fourth man, and take it easy. 😎

I was wonderin' where ya been- are you starting a new gardening channel so you have some taters to go with the Spam and are you growing your own onions too? Yep spent hours behind the handles of one of those things. we had one with a five horse I think it was a Coast to Coast hardware branded machine. Spent all winter with a wash tub over the engine with just the handles sticking out of the snow in the Minnesota winters, and fired right up each spring.

A fun project but those tillers as well as most front tine tillers are useless. They're basically a decades old scam of a garden tool. Unless you are running through fluffy soil after a rear tine tiller has already done all the work, they are garbage. Save the engine for something else that turns up in the future.
