Fix Shifting Problem Honda Rancher ATV

Is your Honda ATV electric shift broken and not shifting? Got a blinking error code (5 blinks from gear indicator)? The 5 blink error code means there is a problem with the "ECU motor driver circuit", but where is the problem actually? In some cases, the problem is with the power shift control motor and other times it may be an angle sensor or the change control unit (computer module). In this video, I diagnose and replace the Power Shift Control Motor and show you how easy it is to do yourself.
ATV Model in video: 2005 Honda Rancher (TRX350FE 4x4 ES)
Power Shift Control Motor: Honda OEM Part# 31300-HN5-A11 (this is the part # for my model of ATV. Always check that the part number you have works for your model of ATV).
I bought the one used in the video new off of ebay and I highly recommend you purchase a Honda OEM part. While some people sell significantly cheaper knock-off versions on ebay, amazon, etc., you never know how long they'll last and how good the quality is so buy at your own risk.

i just said screw it and welded a wrench to the auxiliary shifting shaft and then welded a pipe to that wrench and made it like a stick shift.

They make shifter Levers for them. I was gonna get one. Will it mess up the tranny by shifting it normal or its ok?

@@tdubbs934 no. if you do that, you'd be pretty much doing the same thing the electric motor is doing.

I did that and it’s worked for a while but now it won’t shift at all do you know why?

@@michaelweeden1073make sure to take the gears out of the shift motor then reattach the motor empty

Never work on it with it on.. Disco the battery. You could smoke your ecu.

Should be able to test that motor connected or not connected to see if it’s good or bad

Does anyone know if you un hook the shift motor from the front case and it's still plugged into the power plug turn the key on and hit the gear button on the handlebar will the gear move on the shift motor??? I tried, mine didn't move was curious if that gear will turn when you put it in gear on the handlebar shift button's. I did a continuity test on the shift motor but my number's weren't as high as the one in the video.

I need ur help so when u turned u fourweeler on beside the N had a red light then it truned off my fourweeler has the red light thing and when i turned it on it had the red light turned on and the R is on but when i tried switching the thing to N it dont work

My 04 quit while plowing snow. I manually shifted it into neutral, starter motor engaged but will not fire. did your 4 wheeler fire up in neutral or is that an indicator the shift motor and possibly the angle sensor is bad?

My 2008 rancher 400trx fa is slipping the clutch one’s it gets to temp when cold is fine but once it runs for like 1-2 min starts slipping anyone had this problem

My four wheeler is stuck in 4th gear and the manual leaver thats on the side, I can get it to move. Any ideas?

Sounds simple but try and roll it backwards and forwards and just keep trying to downshift

Great video. I just inherited a red one. It says 4x4 but 8 cannot find any switches to put in 4x4. Any tips ?

interesting. im having trouble wiht my 04 rubicon 500 with the e shift and i did a measurement and mine is reading 00.9 0.1 ohms. Making me think its on its way out because your new one there is reading a much high ohm reading than mine.

Hello, there is a problem on my 2008 Honda trx250tm ES fourtrax. the indicator on the display shows a different position compared to the position on the gearbox. for example on the screen it says that the gearbox is in first gear, but the gearbox is actually in neutral and the green light for neutral does not light up. when I press the small handle and the button down to put it in reverse, the green light for neutral comes on and the gearbox is in reverse gear. I note that I can't get the letter R on the screen at all. I changed the angle sensor but everything is the same. Does anyone have a solution?

Mine shifts when it wants to and don't shift other times. When it's not running it shifts all the time.

@@JuarezDerrick I actually got one a few weeks ago before I got it it didn't shift at all bought the fourwheller abt a month ago the previous owner dogged the hell out of it tho I think it's the angle sensor tbh

There is brushes inside of that control motor. We pulled one apart today and there was no springs behind the brushes we tore apart a Zippo later through the springs into it and it works fine now.. I recommend better and bigger springs as the lighter springs did not work the greatest and we'll need replaced with something better

I wound up breaking all the gears so now I just shifted manually. I put a socket and breaker bar on it and shift by hand

That meant overload which is an open circuit

Same here, have a 98 honda forman 450, neutral light doesn't blink, i can start her up, but no matter how many times i click upshift, it wont do anything.

Probably your handlebar buttons need replaced
