There are many faults that can cause poor shots, but the one discussed in this video could well be the most common among amateur golfers.
This particular downswing fault causes lack of distance, poor accuracy and poor strikes so certainly something that should be worked on
In this short video I first explain why this often happens and then a drill that can help you eradicate it from your game

Good explanation. Being well into my senior years, getting the consistency is difficult. Still hit ball a decent distance and generally straight but harder to get consistency. Maybe 8 out of 10 swings are good which means 4 or 5 per round not so good leading to missing greens/finding trouble and many times double bogies. Body just is wearing out so work on chipping and putting to compensate. Goal is 9+ out of 10 good swings so your thoughts are a great help. So keep hitting a few every day to develop the memory as I gave up the game for over 20 years.

Have only recently started watching your videos but find them so helpful to visualise what is happening with club path etc. Can now see why some drills have you tuck a towel under the trail elbow and bow your wrist at the top of backswing. Just need to take this to the golf course now. Thanks so much.

Hi Ryan, Very interesting and informative video that helps me understand what happens to the club face in the one piece takeaway (remains vertical as the body rotates from address to that position at the end of the take away) and what happens to the club face at the top of the backswing (the club face is horizontal to the sky or to the ground depending on your perspective. You say it open 90 degrees to its original position at address. I see it as 180 degrees vis a vis the ground or the sky but that is really saying the same thing. My point is that the club face opens up from its position at the end of the takeaway (done by basically a body/ shoulder movement to the right) and from there the Club face gets to the horizontal position relative to the ground by solely rotating the forearms to reach what in effect would be the top of the backswing. Therefore it would make sense to start the downswing from the top not with the shoulder or body as you so correctly point out as being a most common error (for me too for years), but rather by rotating the arms back to their position at the end of the takeaway. And from there it would be quite OK to engage the body and shoulders to rotate into the ball. Because the shoulders will be still behind you in the slot or delivery position at the end of the takeaway position on the way down, it is Ok to use the shoulders and the body to strike the ball from there Hope I am making sense.??

Thanks for a really helpful vid. Despite having played for a while I lapse back into this way too easily. I love when you show the movements upright for clarity. I'm not sure if this is possible but I would love to see a modified version of this drill where you came slightly off plane to emphasise the feel of these movements when momentum is added. Although this simplifies the swing greatly, I find this type of drill makes me too laid off because it bleeds through to my in-posture swing. i.e i get used to the upright swing feeling and when i swing in posture my hands recreate that same feeling thereby making me laid off with flat shoulders. It would be great to know a good way of getting around this and could make a great follow-up video. Just an idea if you're interested? I'm sure I can't be the only one. :D

Thx for the content Chris. Based on video feedback I’m fairly close to keeping my trail arm under my lead but the issue I’m having is at the top of my backswing my head and lead shoulder dive in towards the ball. I can’t seem to find any help with this or even know the cause. It gives me a steeper shaft even though I’m very close to keeping trail arm under lead.

It’s funny seeing so many beginners on the range banging balls - who haven’t got the major swing moves down . To me, “banging balls” is about working on that final finesse of timing. A beginner and or high handicapper should be working on the major body moves. I.e. do that first drill Chris shows 90% of the time.

Chris, your explanations are excellent about the mechanics of the swing. Today I played the front nine of my local course and tried your tips and had a great day with my irons off the tee and from the fairway... so much so I had to club down to reduce my distances as my normal draw shot was going dead straight with great hang time. On the other hand, my trusty 3 and 5 woods were terrible as I topped every shot. Could you do a video that shares the differences in ball placement, tee height, and swing style between woods and irons for your technique? Not sure with my "new swing" I need to make some further adjustments for my woods. Thanks

Thanks Chris. Is “release” the point after impact? The left and right flights result from the club head being closed or open? So “timing” is determined by the length of the downswing TIMES the speed of my body turn TIMES the desired power and distance? Thanks again.

Fantastic drill. I think this fault may be why I have a tendency to pull my drives to the left. Sounds like my trail shoulder might be too active. For some reason I don't have the same problem with irons. I think the longer driver swing gets me out of sync.

Do I have my right arm//playing right handed// too far behind me? Shouldn't the right arm in the backswing be as close to in line with the right side as possible// like when being sworn in? or taking an oath? My left arm is far too short to allow me to get into that position all the way.. but isn't that the location I should be aiming for? By the way.. killer practice today starting with this exercise. Hit 90% of shots on line and many many shots 1 to 2 meters long or short of target. Many many.
