We fix the CMOS issue in a Dell Inspiron 1525. The system was giving the error "time of day clock stopped" and would not boot into windows. The solution is to change the CMOS/Watch battery (aka BIOS battery). A new CR3202 battery is only about 4-7 USD. Replacing it is tricky but not hard. Here is how you do it.

I did this today and it's worked. Thank you. It is a bit fiddly and beware.. due to age I suppose the plastic retaining lip on the side of the battery holder snapped off when I flicked out the old battery. There was a tiny bit of lip left so Ive added a small dot of blu-tac to the bottom of the battery and piece of duct tape over the top and sticking to the edge of the holder!

@ 5:30, the diagnostic message clearly tells you to press F2 to enter SETUP, which will allow you to reset the clock/calendar to the correct time and date. Do this FIRST, and all is well...

Same problem after change battery.... Solution is remove power card and wait some time... again witched on Lap it will working till not to go bios menu (My lap Main battery is completely drain)

Thanks for this easier way! I was dreading taking all those additional screws out, monitor off, keyboard out etc, etc. I never remember which screws go where, and can never figure out how to use the screws i always have left over....lol! Thanks!

quick question, if my dell's clock and calendar doesnt work, even when its plugged in to the charger (i keep it plugged at all times, battery life is very low). Would changing the cmos battery would do the trick? Best Regards

Im not sure if you'd found the answer to it or replaced your laptop. My Dell Inspiron 1525, bought in 2008 has the same issue. I have to manually set the time under bios, and then it remembers the setting until i power the whole thing off. If i switch off the power supply, the next time i have to reset it through bios again.

Does the main battery supply the power to the CMOS or is the motherboard drawing from that tiny battery?

I'm trying to replace the battery on my sister-in-law's computer right now. I can't believe how insanely difficult it is to access this battery...it's in a slightly different place than the one in this video, and I cannot figure out how to open the housing enough to even free it. Terrible design for replacing this dumb battery!
