One huge tip not mentioned here, nor on many XPS 8700 upgrade tutorials. The most expensive versions, which shipped with the i7-4790, has an intake fan in a place where Dell done a well job of concealing with black tape to be peeled off. Then there's two notches to secure a 92mm intake fan, only two screws are needed for the other two corners for install. I used the stock exhaust fan header for this intake fan (Noctua NF-A9 92mm) & used a PWM spitter included with the kit to combine the exhaust with CPU fan. Then using the SpeedFan app (100% free) and after playing around, got the max of 808rpm fans to run at over 2,000rpm! Being all Noctua fans installed (didn't mention upgrading both the exhaust & CPU), even at a steady 100%, yes could be heard, yet wasn't a distraction by any means. This is one of the reasons Noctua is popular, not due to color scheme, rather cooling performance combined with low noise levels & a very generous 6 year warranty that few will need. Plus all of the extras in the package, ended up with two extra PWM spitters even after using one to tie the exhaust to CPU. However, the real bottleneck(s) of the XPS 8700 are twofold. First, the fake x4 slot, of which Dell stated was so in the specs. Too bad I didn't print this, one reason why I purchased. It's electrically a x1 slot, glad I didn't order the Plextor PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD (fully enclosed, no adapter needed) with it. Secondly, only a single 4 pin power to the CPU, even though Dell released a BIOS for the Haswell Refresh (i5-4690K & i7-4790K). The Intel XTU app, even with the cooling upgrades, was throttling, due to be starved for power. Considering that the most expensive models went for over $2,000, this would be a no-brainer to spend the extra $2 on (as well as true x4 slot). While the mSATA SSD may be OK for boosting HDD performance by RAID, as was the case for higher priced models, it was misery to install a 256GB Crucial M550 mSATA SSD in the same port for OS install to save space. Although all of the surronding components ran cool (between 28-40C, depending on load), the mSATA SSD was constantly near the 70C mark & Crucial techs stated this was 'normal'. Some reported the same with Samsung 850 EVO mSATA. Funny thing was, I already had the 2.5" variant of the 256GB Crucial M550, and ran at less than half the temp, most of the time. In the end, would clone the mSATA install to a new 512GB Samsung 850 Pro with 10 year warranty & moved the Crucial drives elsewhere. The only way to make the mSATA SSD run cool was to place in a SYBA mSATA to 2.5" adapter, then install that in a Rosewill 3.5" to 2.5" adapter with fan, then it would run at the same temps as other SSD's. I spent almost half enough cash (and lost some hair and a lot of my cool) on cooling this drive, to have purchased a 2nd 2.5" M550 when it went on promo. Dell would had been better served to had placed a 10Gb/sec M.2 slot on that MB, even if 2nd gen, as the Ultra M.2 (32Gb/sec) socket had yet to be released. Could had been a boot or storage option. At any rate, the mSATA slot intended for RAID is simply a glorified version of ReadyBoost. If one can find a 32GB SATA-3 mSATA on eBay for $15-20, go for it, at $50 or more, too expensive & there's lots of decent 2.5" SSD's to choose from, although I must say at this time, avoid DRAM-less & QLC models. TLC or (preferably) MLC are best, the latter having more endurance and has more than withstood the test of time. There was no TLC when I purchased my first SSD in 2011, a 128GB Crucial m4 which still reports 98% lifespan. Other than the above, did upgrade the PSU to a EVGA G3 550W Gold rated fully modular for less than $50 after promo & rebate, and the PC has seen three GPU upgrades. Don't know whom came up with the lame idea to install the Dell (OEM) Radeon HD 7570 (1GB GDDR5), a PCIe 2.1 model that couldn't do 2K, let alone higher. When others had the GTX 645 (OEM) which could run 4K on the Displayport 1.2 connection. www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-645-oem/specifications Speaking of the PSU, not only myself, a friend had random freezes for over a year with this PC (even with only onboard graphics), after the PSU upgrade, no more happened for either of us (he chose the EVGA B3 550 (Bronze), still fully modular. Although the gold rated 460W Delta PSU shouldn't had been overly taxed, because Dell approved it for the GTX 970, a powerful GPU at the time & energy wise, not as efficient as models of today (more power hungry). My guess would be if the CPU had twin 4 pin power connectors, then the PSU would had been pushed harder. BTW, the Intel HD Graphics included with the i7-4770 could do 4K @ 60GHz with Displayport. So bundling a shitty card like the Radeon HD 7570 made no sense, that cash could had been used to beef up the motherboard to a real x4 slot & twin 4 pin CPU power plugs (& PSU with the extra plug). It did ship with a 6 pin for PSU upgrade. Currently running a EVGA GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 SSC & performance is decent. As Dell (finally) used Intel type plugs for all fans, as well as delidded the CPU & used liquid metal & a replacement 100% copper IHS from Rockit88. Temps nosedived from over 85C under full load (running the folding@home app) to the 60-62C range. This was after the fan upgrade, which also helped a lot, yet wasn't running the folding@home app 24/7 at the time. I'd say the fans alone with normal usage dropped temps a lot, the intake providing a real airflow made a difference. This is also why the XPS 8700 was my last new OEM machine, got into building my own, didn't realise it was so easy. It would allow to eliminate bottlenecks by the selection of my own components, the first of which was a Z97 Extreme6 build, the first retail MB which featured not only an Ultra M.2 port, also a previous gen for SATA-3. Would be the first of three Z97 builds, then began building low priced FX-8350/8370 builds. My regrets that I missed out on the 990FX MB's, although found some decent 990 ones. In closing, am looking to see if I can install a later XPS motherboard into the XPS 8700 case. If not, will sell the PC, as I'm not into wire modding to make a retail mATX MB work. Although would be exciting to have a 'sleeper' build, using the only mATX X570 MB made by ASRock. Hey, I turned a Dimension 2400 into a powerhouse & it wasn't hard, total cost under $300, one of my FX-8350 builds. Not that the FX series is revelant today, still it's like comparing dial up Internet with 100Mbps cable. WEI scores all 7.7 or better (7.9 on both GPU scores & SSD). I have the Dell 8700 with I7 4700 cpu and mine with the stock cooler at 100 percent load is at 71 C and in Idle is around 34 C. I also have the Nvidia 1060 in the pc.

I bought a 12cm hole saw and made a hole on the side cover and fitted another 120mm airflow fan as exchaust!

So retrospectively you say that the Freezer 33 is too big to fit in the Dell. So instead you recommend a smaller one -- the Freezer 13. Question: How then can you know that it will cool this PC adequately? Or did you try it, and if so, can you please post the results?

I still play on my XPS 8700. Got it used on eBay in 2015 for about $350 and upgraded RAM to 16 GB. Currently have a 1060 6 GB that I also picked up on eBay. I think I paid around $125 for that just before COVID hit.

I have the xps special edition, aka 8930 and when im playing GTA or RUST my temps are hitting 80-95c will this cooler work for my cpu? cpu is i7 9700. please let me know! i would be comfortable around 65 - 75c ish.

This test seems flawed. You clearly state that the aftermarket cooler will not fit stock Dell case. Which you have stated as having poor air flow to begin with, w/only 1 case fan. A more reasonable scenario would be to do a case swap. In which case, I'm curious if you could actually achieve similar results with the stock cooler, by simply doing a case swap, to get better air flow, with more case fans.

To be honest, as far as stock coolers go, they might be enough in some situations. I have been using stock coolers myself for a while now on an i5 4690 and now on a Ryzen 5 2600x and in a well ventilated case they are able to keep temperatures under control. :)

Ik its 2019 but i cpuldnt find this anywhere, where do you get the longer clips to keep the fan in place? Im using the corshair one from your dell xps 8700 mod but the clips arent long enough to reach the top like yours

That CPU cooler Arctic Freezer 33 CO is good but if you have Maximus V Gene motherboard + R9 390 Card like me, this is bad... because the fan itself produces heat. This heat is killing my card. This is because of cpu fan. This is stupid because, when my old cpu fan stopped... my card video card had no issues. After replacing broken cpu, i am at risk of loosing my r9 390.

Basically, most people DONT have an intake fan. So here is the basics as to why your running hot. You GPU is pumping out a crap load of heat into your CLOSED case which is filling it with HOT AIR. Your processor heat sink fan runs IN to your heat sink, but it is pumping HOT AIR from the GPU into that heat sink!! Thus a HOT processor. I game with my notoriously HOT DELL XPS 8940 with the side panel OFF. The heat from my 1660 super blows directly out and away from the case in turn giving the processors fan fresh air. If the panel was still on the HOT AIR from the GPU would blow against the side panel and fill the case with HOT AIR. BOOM!!!!! Take your side panel off.

I've never had overheating problems with my XPS 8700. Perhaps it's because I know what I'm doing. Or because I didn't buy it from Best Buy.
