Fix Your Xbox One Controller Stick Drift - How to replace an Xbox One Joystick Module

So your Xbox One Controller is having some stick drift issues huh? What I mean by stick drift is even when you aren't pushing the analog stick on your controller your character continues to move on screen or when your navigating menus you can't navigate the menu properly because the menu just keeps cycling through. One of my controllers started having stick drift issues about a year or two ago... while playing games if I set my controller down to go get a drink or something my character would begin walking forward as if he had somewhere important he needed to be and more annoyingly when navigating menus like in Netflix it would begin rapidly scrolling up as I was trying to browse for movies or TV shows. The Xbox One stick drift problem is actually a very common problem but thankfully you don't have to drop $60 on a new controller to take care of it. In this video I show you how to fix, repair and eliminate the "stick drift" issue for less than $10 US (that is of course assuming you already have some of the tools it takes to fix this) by replacing the faulty joystick module in the Xbox One Controller. I walk you through the process of disassembling your Xbox One Controller unsoldering and removing the faulty joystick module, installing and soldering in the new module and then reassembling your controller. I even do some testing and show that the repair in fact fixed the "stick drift" problem and is now working like new again.
Here's some links to some joystick modules on Amazon if you'd like to purchase some and help out my channel at the same time. :)

You really don't know why M$ hasn't addressed the issue - when they can get you to buy a new controller for $60? When using a soldering wick, put a little bit of solder on the tip of iron before applying it to the wick that you place on top of the joint you want to free. It seems counter-intuitive to add solder to remove solder. But it has to do with heat transfer. Yes, it is always best to alternate pins when soldering joints on a PCB to avoid heating one small area too much.

+Uisce Preston thanks for the comment. I totally agree with you on MS wanting you to buy a new controller but at the same time I would think they'd want to sell more consoles and having a known problem like this doesn't do them any favors. :) but then again they're Microsoft and seem to be able to give us this kind of junk all the time and get away with it.

Uisce Preston I just trade in my controller and buy a new one every year or so, I hate drift but I don’t feel like doing all this just to fix it with aftermarket parts. They give you $30 to trade in your controller and then it’s just another $30. If you can’t afford $30 then idk what to tell you lol

Thanks! This is the most in depth and high quality video on this subject. Even ifixit does not have a guide for the Joystick module yet. For anyone struggling with the desoldering: I recommend picking up a desoldering pump. Just head up the solder, and place the pump over it and suck up the molten solder. You can find one at a local hardware store for about 4 bucks (for a simple one)

It only voids the warranty if you poke a hole in the sticker or if you open your big mouth. The sticker peels off easily enough. Just stick it back on prior to returning it. The screws can be removed with a flathead as well, so long as it fits tightly. Otherwise you will strip them. I've disassembled many controllers and was still able to return them even with the screws missing their center pins. Hopefully I won't have to do that anymore as I just ordered a bunch of replacement modules. Also, I'm not 100% sure on this but I think the right and left modules are the same as are the modules from other consoles from the same generation. So if you have another controller lying around with drift (it's always the left module that takes a shit first) you can sacrifice one for parts and yank its remaining working module. Who knows, you might be able to have a properly working controller again without having to pay anyone anything. Wouldn't that be something?

This guy got super lucky with that solder wick, those soldering points for the joysticks are so tight that a solder sucker of wick barely works. A good way is to use a heat gun at like 650f, that'll loosen it up but be careful with heating up the board too much.

Need a little help. I did the fix with a replacement control unit and my stick drift is 100% gone in my left thumbstick. I have an Elite controller and I didn't want to fork out another $100+ for a freaking controller and the fix seemed like it worked right. However, upon testing, I've found that the Y button is malfunctioning. The Y button doesn't trigger anything anymore but the trigger button on the back that is bound to Y may be constantly firing off. When in the controller mapping tool it showed that Y was being rapidly pressed according to the app but nothing was pressing it. Disabling the triggers with the double tapping of the trigger control button got rid of the massive trigger firing BUT it also didn't fix the Y button being inoperable. Any ideas as to why this would have happened? I soldered in the joystick unit just fine and that is working like new but the triggering problem makes the controller nearly unusable since so many games use all of the available buttons.

If you've never done any soldering before I would recommend having someone help you that has some experience. I've never done any soldering myself which is why I asked my cousin for his help on this one. I have links to the joystick modules and a soldering kit in the video description. The kit comes with some solder wick (that's what the copper wire stuff is called) and it also comes with a solder suction tool. Both are used for removing solder, my cousin prefers the wick because he says it's easier to use than the suction tool.

I don’t think you have to take the whole thing out. I think you can take out a small piece of either the x or y axis of the stick. There is a little green piece that you peel back that reveals a replaceable copper part. You can simply take that out and replace it with a new one. I don’t thing you have to put in a whole new part

+Curious Again thanks for the question and greetings from America. :) It is possible the replacement joystick module you bought is slightly defective but it could also be it just needs to be "broken in" a bit more. I'm also a firm believer in the saying "you get what you pay for" so I never buy the least expensive item when shopping for anything. I also don't by the most expensive stuff either but often go for the "middle of the road" items. But once again I hope it's just a matter of needing to break your new joystick in a little bit. :)

Honestly I don't know for sure what may be causing your issue or if replacing the joystick module will help. I'd like to believe it will help but I don't know for sure. There is a guy here in the comments that called me an idiot and said there is a way to re-calibrate your controller but since replacing the joystick module fixed my problem I've never tried his suggestion myself. According to him this was something that was on the Xbox 360 which Microsoft has carried over to the Xbox One. Again this is from the guy that said I'm an idiot so take it for what you will. "Push and hold down both bumpers simultaneously for three seconds when you’re focused straight and level" according to him this will re-calibrate your controller. I can't find anything online that confirms this however. I've found videos of how to calibrate a controller on a PC but I don't know if that only calibrates the controller to work with the PC or if it saves something to the controller itself that will then carry back over to the Xbox if that makes sense. Anyway I hope this helps. Best of luck to you fellow Brian. (I spell my name with a Y though, Bryan) :)

Collin Mulligan I totally understand how replacing the entire joystick module can seem like quite a daunting task. I personally have never done any soldering which is why I asked for my cousins help to do this. Like I mentioned in the video I tried some of the "non-invasive" repair suggestions that are online and none of them worked for me. I wanted to give this a try because I figured if we can repair the controller for less than buying a new one that's awesome. And if it doesn't work I'll just have to buy a new controller which is what I was going to do originally anyway. I get this isn't for everyone, I just wanted to share with people that it is fixable and they don't have to buy a new controller. :)

Apart from buying all the parts and tools needed, it isn't that big of a hassle, trust me. I haven't soldered anything since I was in 9th grade (2001 I think) and that's the only time I've ever done it really... but watching him do it reminded me how easy it is. You really just need to experience melting the metal strip once or twice to realize it's actually kinda easy. So I recommend just practicing it a couple times on something else to learn the feel for it. As seen in the vid you just hold the iron where you want the molten metal as if you are trying to heat up that spot kinda.. and then just feed the strip into it. I remember if you tried to like hold the metal over the spot and then stick the iron to it to like drip it, it didn't work. Or if you put the strip on the spot and then stuck the iron on top of it.. it never worked. We were soldering copper spokes together to create a frame to see who could support the most weight in the class. So it may be different than the controller circuit board...But when you realized you just hold the iron on the desired spot like you are heating the copper and feeding it the metal.. it worked perfectly... almost like it is attracted to that spot. Cuz it seemed to me that the heated area around it helps keep it molten long enough after the initial melting by the iron to form to the spot you're soldering. Otherwise it'd just melt.. and cool immediately.. and then you'd be trying to remelt the gob and it just got messy and didn't work. At least it seemed that way to me over a decade ago. I could be talkin outta my ass and creating a fiction in my mind. But the point is.. it wasn't as daunting as it first seemed.

These are hands down the worst controllers I've ever encountered. I still have all of my original controllers for every system I've ever owned (all the way back to NES) and those controllers still work fine. I'm now on Xbox One controller number 3 because of either a shoulder button breaking off or stick drift. So I decide to be economic and salvage one for parts to fix the others. They're slightly _different_ designs, so I couldn't even swap shoulder buttons! So lame!

Can somebody tell me here... Are the left and right sticks of xbox one controller exactly the same thing in every way possible ?? i mean i feel that right stick of my controller take a little more force than left one to move... It feels like new... But i feel that left stick is a little light.... i just play racing games and side strollers with controller... So the only stick being used is the left one... So is it possible that left stick is gone loose or is it supposed to be a little more light than the right one? My controller is 3 months old..

+adnan asghar the joystick module inside the controller is exactly the same for both the left and right thumbsticks. +adnan asghar I don't think you need to worry man. If you're mostly using the left stick then it's possible that one is simply more "broken in" from being used more often. Over time as you use the right stick more I think it too will get more "broken in" and the two should begin to feel more similar.

You don't need to do this, to fix drifting issues. The controllers Sticks and triggers all have adjustable potentiometers so you can fine tune them to stop drift. Just turn the dial on the side 0.5ml either way to fix drift. Microsoft to compete with Sony used cheap parts on the Xbox One and controllers to the point where the life expectancey of a keen gamers xbox one controller is 3months . Seriously the 3rd party cheaper controllers are usually better made with better internal components..
