FIXED! BMW Power Tailgate will not open or close; Power Liftgate will not raise up or down

The power tailgate on BMW X5 would unlock but would not raise up with the button on the dash nor would it lower down automatically with the red button on the tailgate. I replaced the old superseded part number with a USED module with the latest newest part number. I purchased the control module from an ebay seller called specializedgerman. I got a decent price and very FAST shipment. The powered tailgate operation was successfully restored without coding or any initializing, software or adjustments. It was just "plug and play" with this used particular part (your results might be different). I did however loose the coding previously done by me that enabled the tailgate to CLOSE from both the key fob and the dash button. I intend to restore that feature.
The electronic control module was damaged due to water. I still need to find the source of the water (most probably from the sunroof drains not functioning properly) but in the meantime I have raised up the control module and put it into a waterproof bag.
I purchased part # 61357335274 supersedes my original part number 61357304626. This part also REPORTEDLY supersedes 61357317419, 61357230669, 61357207576, 61357205352, 61357046342, 61357200464, 61357190325.

Thank you! This video just saved me from having to go to the mechanic. Same symptoms, and I followed the instructions to locate the control panel in my 2017 X3. I located it and sure enough, the rear cargo area was full of water! I used the shop vac and filled it! Dried out the control board with a hair dryer and HOORAY! The tailgate buttons work! Now I just have to find out where the leaks are coming from... Looking at the sunroof drains and the silicon seals for the third brake light and tailgate wiring loom. This video was a huge benefit. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU!!! I just "excavated" mine per your instructions!!! :) I lucked out - the rain was pouring non-stop for 4 days. Today I finally drove the vehicle and I noticed the trunk wouldn't open. Sure enough the moonroof drain tubes that terminate behind the rear tire cavity cover (pardon my poor vocabulary) must have gotten clogged so the water flooded the controller area (on my 5-series it usually floods the rear footwell, not the trunk). I used my wife's hairdryer to dry it out and I am back in business - I guess I caught it right on time. Will have to unclog the tubes this weekend. Thanks again!

2014 X3 same problem. However the control module is located in the battery compartment and yes, it was flooded. Everything was wet. Shop vac about a gallon of water. Opened the control module and dried it out. Gave it a couple of hours in the sun with some forced air to speed up the drying and Bingo....it actually worked. Thanks for your video. Its amazing what a little duck tape and WD-40 can do.

I hope to have the video posted later this week and will also post why you need to find the k-can and pt-can splices and get them up higher so they don't corrode and cause all sorts of electrical faults, which I have recently experienced first hand!

Hi YuDaMan, I had the same issue on a 09 x5. I was hoping the problem was as you said, but it wasn't. it was the tailgate lift struts. When you raised and lowered the gate it would make a real grizzly crunchy noise, when it would move at all. I noticed when you operated the gate that it sounded smooth and quiet. 950 dollars later for the struts and it works perfectly

you got lucky to get it working after drying. I wasn't lucky. I have a couple of videos posted on this topic including the location of my main water leak (where the wire harness rubber boot enters the car body). Dealer said normally leak is at the sunroof drain tube or the rubber boot. I still have a very tiny leak which I suspect is near the tail lamp but no enough to be a problem anymore. Be sure to report back on your findings. It will help others. And look for my video on how to remove the headliner to access the drain tube. I'd appreciate a LIKE and a SUBSCRIBE. Thanks!!!

My 2019 X7 went in for service today with same issue. Lower portion of tailgate no longer opened or closed. Oddly, upper half worked fine, which didn't make much sense. I saw this video, but figured out I've still got warranty left so didn't bother to check whether water getting in was the issue. No need to fix myself! Water was the issue, though. They claim the grommet for the wires was not seated properly -- which may be the case. But something obviously is unseating the grommets, so they need to figure it out. Anyway, they're installing a new module to address. I like the idea of the waterproof caulk that someone just posted. Perhaps I go that route. Thanks for the video, I appreciate it.

I had a similar problem on the left hand side. My ABS and brake control unit is located in the same place on the Left hand side. I got a load of warning lights on ABS, Parking Brake, the red Brake light and Chassis Stabilization warning. Turns out the left sunroof drain was kinked in the middle (possibly since installation in the factory in 2012) and was only allowing a small amount of water to drain. Eventually it closed up altogether and the water found it's way to the compartment shorting the unit. A replacement unit was $700 bucks and about as much again in labor from my indy shop got it taken care of but I'm going to check out the other grommets in the door where the wiring goes through to make sure everywhere is water tight.

If you have not allready got the answer. But to relearn should be the same as my Skoda. Open the gate to your prefered position (block by letting the gate hit your hand at the rigth position or manually move it). When the gate is in your position, hold the button on the door for about 4sec and the gate beeps. Then you have "relearned" the gate to what ever position you want it to stop at.

Undoubtedly it's that right side sunroof drain tube being clogged which forces water into the headliner instead and right down into the right C-pillar and into the electronic's compartment. I had the issue on the left side and used landscape trimmer wire to unclog it. A lot of debris came out even though I'm never parked under a tree or anything else. I'd advise to unclog both rear drain tubes at least once a year.

I did find source of the majority of the leak. It's documented in my various videos with good views of the troublesome area ... leaks around the wire harness grommet as the harness enters the rear car body from the tailgate...not 100% resolved but close. I think there is some water entering from around the taillight assembly but I have not yet confirmed that 100%. After sealing around that grommet, the water is so minor it evaporates even after a heavy rain before I can even inspect how much still leaked in.

I had a similar problem, the boot would only open a couple of cm and then try to close. I tried to force the boot open (don’t do that) and the left strut came apart. I finally managed to fix it by getting in the car, opening the boot a couple of cm and then being able to push the red boot button, every 2/3 times the boot would move up just a couple of cm and then move back down about the same distance. The trick was to hold the boot so that it couldn’t move down, and let it move up by itself, eventually it got all the way to the top, it seemed to have reset itself as it could then be closed all the way and would then be able to open all the way. Hope this helps someone.

I think I've seen websites that offer this product. The spring strength is NOT trivial. The tailgate is HEAVY. Not sure why you wouldn't just replace the module with a used one for under $100 and waterproof. Be sure to LIKE and subscribe if you found my video helpful. That would really help me. THANKS!!!!

Mine opens when it wants to. Rarely opens with the key fob and now using the latch it's hit or miss.

Water coming from sunroof seals
@YuDaMan
@YuDaMan 2 жыл бұрын
are you talking about the seals you see, sort of like stiff felt weatherstripping? Those are not intended to completely waterproof the sliding room .... just prevent some of the water from entering the opening. Water that does get thru as expected, flows into a large plastic cassette tray UNDER the roof and that tray empties out thru drain lines in the front pillar and rear roof ended above the tailgate. All that is working in my vehicle and the leak source is somewhere else.
