Thank you for showing how to disconnect it from the ceiling! I replaced the battery earlier in the evening. It stopped chirping for 6 hours then at 5:30am it decided to start chirping again. Time to remove and throw into the far corner of the garage...

I replaced one of these - that was occasionally chirping. Just for yuks, I took the old one apart. I believe that the problem is the battery contacts. The battery tray does not have any wires connecting it to the circuit board. Instead, there is a pair of springy contacts. The detector is constantly testing the battery, and if one of those contacts gets dirty.....

Not only have I replaced the batteies, but I've replaced the smoke detectors themselves, and still get the occasional cheeping. I can go for a month or so without it, and them one will cheep. It can cheep a few times, several minutes apart, and then stop for a month or more, or it can cheep for a long time, until I get sick of it and disconnect it for while. The I replace it, and it can go for a while again, and then start cheeping. Any thoughts?

To get the detector apart, you poke holes in the labels on the bottom to get at the mounting feet. Then tease the feet away from their mounts, and pry the top up. Then you can clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, such as Caig DeOxit.

Thank you so much for putting up this video..I just fixed my detector. I could not figure out how to get the ac wire disconnected so I could open the battery compartment. My detector is a little different than the one in the video, but the same principle. When I saw how you squeezed the prongs(?), then I pulled and it was released..I never would have figured it out..I kept pulling..luckily, I did not break anything before I decided to let KZfaq help me out..Thanks a MILLION!!!

If once you replace the battery, it still chirps for a few minutes, don't freak out. Give it several minutes for the detector to detect it has a new, charged battery. It should stop chirping after then. At least that's what happened to me, and this follows what jerryk123456 says in his comment about, "The detector is constantly testing the battery... " It may just take a few minutes after inserting the new battery for the detector to run one of those periodic tests.

OMG!! My dam fire detector has the same chirp. But mine is not powered by a battery it is powered by wiring to some power source in the wall. WHY IS IT Chirping!! ?? Is it time to get it replaced? My old fire detectors are 10-20 years old not battery powered and no chirp at all and they still work fine. This all started during the winter season BTW

Smoke detector needs to be replaced or battery every 10 years?

i opend the doors set the fans and got my grass blower and set it on the alarm 15 min later all the smok was out of my house and i went back closed the doors off the fans and went back to my thing

My smoke alarm went off one time when I was cooking and none of the buttons turned it off so I ripped it off the wall in anger.
