Thank you for watching. This mower belongs to a neighbor, and they couldn't get it working. Turns out, the fix was very easy, that anyone can do it, and without the use of any tools.

We have two of these mowers(one at each property). They always start up and run great but we always run the gas out of them after each use. The self propelled system is great and the motor has lots of torque so it does not bog down much at all in tall grass compared to our older mowers we used to use.

Nice mower! Got the same Hrn216 since 2 years ago when I bought it new. In the last 2 years it has not given me any major issues with this mower. Only changed the oil on it twice, haven’t changed the blades yet, will do it soon. Might change the air filter this year but other than that, I think it’s the best Honda mower I’ve ever had for my business.😉

I found this video very helpful. Mower would not start, first cut of the year. Purchased last year so it’s very new. Yes, I had way to much oil in the engine. Even after I drained and refilled with 12 oz it was not cranking. Took off air filter and added a little gas to the carburetor. Would crank and cut off pretty quickly. After 4-5 cranks and cut off it stayed running and now is working as usual. Guess I had some water in the carburetor. Either way, your video was very helpful! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thank you for the detailed video. We have this exact same mower we bought maybe 5 or 6 mos ago. Mowed the yard 1 or 2 times. Let it sit like 4 mos in the garage. Tried to use it last week and It wouldn't start. Drained the fuel. Put new fuel in. It started and ran fine. One week later, now it wont start again. Wife is now starting to say bad things about Honda (we just bought a CR-V) haha. Thinking our area of Southern Washington state is either using too much ethanol in their fuel (we use Chevron and Shell) or the fuel we have in our 5 gallon sat too long and has water in it...
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
that is a possibility. I like to use a 2 gallon gas can, because it allows me to pour it easier, and more importantly it allows me to use the gasoline without worrying about having it too long. That time, can allow the gasoline to either get old or collect more moisture from the air.

I have this mower, has worked flawlessly for 2 years. It’s lighter and a lot more maneuverable compared to my HRR216. Of course the key to any mower or any piece of equipment, is regular maintenance. If you MUST leave it outside, cover it up for heavens sake, lol. Treat your mower casually and it will become a casualty, lol. Cheers!

Treat them well and they will return the favor. I've seen almost no regularly maintained mowers blow up quicker then a unmaintained one. I know a person that buys push mowers and never changes blades, oil, or air filters they gave me a mower that had the foam filter half eaten by the engine and so brittle in was falling apart in my hand they filled the Carb fuel bowl with fuel since the tank and bowl wouldn't hold without pouring it out. Those people blew a couple year old John Deere push mower with at most 5 hours of use from trimming here and there and they blew it up in only 7 Months it cranked every time when we had it and ran beautifully but lack of maintenance blew it up. All my riding mowers that run are 20 Years old from Sears and they run great.

I recently found an Aussie Victa Tornado mulch or catch 19" mower with a 190cc Briggs 625 series with good blades. All it needed was fuel and it started right up and runs smoothly. It's great for chopping up a small pile of leaves and depositing it on the lawn. With a quick rake you never know they were there. It has a disc with fins on it and four blades bolted to the edge. Unfortunately such a blade set up doesn't comply in the USA but we've been using such a swing blade set up for decades without a problem.

Excellent overview of mower prep and maintenance especially useful for those averse to reading the owners manual. Mostly agree with your no-start views but I'd liked to have seen you examine the plug to see whether fuel was being drawn into the CC. I take exception to your comment that too much oil is more dangerous than too little.

Love the video I have the Honda hrx and I have only used it for a season but have loved it so far my biggest downside is despite having a polycarbonate type deck it is heavier than most steel decked mowers and has an unusually low setting for the bars (even on the highest setting) I would assume this would give you more leverage when moving it around the yard to compensate for the weight it is a great mower to use other than that small issue

Excellent video. I have one of these with the GCV 170. Idles like crap. As soon as the blade is engaged it runs and cuts perfect. Had it for less than a year. Use only non-eth fuel. In my opinion the newer Honda mowers are inferior to the older models. I've had five different ones. A HRC215 commercial mower with what I believe is a Gcv140 stands out above the rest. The smaller engine has never starved for power and cuts very well. The metal body is the weak point as is every Honda I've owned. All in all, despite the flaws, they make a great mower in the price range. As the competition dwindles, they have excelled. I read somewhere that Honda is getting out of the lawn mower production business as soon as this year. (2023). Knowing when to call it quits cuts losses in most cases. Who would have thought?

Great mower with tons of power, I went with the electric start vs blade start stop for simplicity and less wear items. Shear weight of this thing makes it hold hills great. Simple maintenance once a year and go. I just wish the tipping method did get all the oil out at once. Side note, keep the original factory fill bottle and just refill that. Makes oil change's quicker. I spoil mine with amsoil.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE good thing to consider for sure. My 2c: I say this as an industrial construction worker with 3 summers working major landscaping before: I’d be VERY surprised if a homeowner or even entry-level lawn care person broke a plastic Honda deck. By test standards the plastic used is stronger than aluminum (see AVE channel on that subject).

I run a lawn Business and bought 2 of these last year and after 1 week and maybe 2hrs on it the valve cover is leaking oil on 1 and the other seems ok. I also have i think the 2017-18 model and loved it! But... I used the shit out of it and needs new rings plus valve cover leak has been fixed 3xs. Would still use it but time is an issue and I don't have it to be able to rebuild or I would have because it cuts way better than the new HRN. It was built way stronger and it was more solid but the pinion gears for the rear-drive would also get locked up from dirt build-up in the bushings and I believe the new hrns did away with that. So there's pluses and negatives as always and they're only used for lawns I can't get my Zero Turns in.

Now ere just having a problem finding. Replace cement deck, but the ones that are comparable are like 500 plus bucks, but im sure we can get a few good more years out of it, our sol is pretty sandy so m guessing over the years, as we mowed, the metal started to wear down just because it becomes Ike a sandblaster as the blades suck everything up

Hey bro simple repair to this mower. I really thought that you would have to take the carburetor apart tho. @@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Yes! I’m 100% sure. Had tons of issues with the system on my old HRR because the adjuster driveshaft bushing lacked a seal on the wheel side. My HRX217HYA has a dust seal on both sides of the bushing, but still has to spin the transmission. I recently picked up an HRN216VKA as a “spare” to ensure I can mow the rest of my days with Honda. The HRN uses a completely different dual ratcheting setup that makes it so the drive shaft is only in play when the self propelled is activated. It’s a brilliant design.

Interesting. Oil changes on my K5 Honda GCV190 (one generation earlier than this one) take around 450ml, which would be roughly 15 ounces. 10% more, give or take. I've never seen one of these newer engines torn down, but it would be interesting to see the differences. I'm mildly curious why you use liquid fuel instead of spray ether to awaken a non-starting engine. Most starter fluid brands have an upper cylinder lubricant (at least the stuff I use) and it seems more precise and possibly tidier and safer to put the fuel right where you want it, and not all over the airbox. Cost, maybe?
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
most people don't agree with using starter fluid, no matter what lubrication Is in. If I use the can, I will get inundated with thumbs downs and rude comments, so liquid fuel it is.

that's a good question, with too much oil, the Oil can get foamy, which is not desirable in this type of oiling system.

Foamy oil - the air bubbles mean metal on metal contact resulting in premature wear. Better for an engine to have 2 Oz too little than 2 Oz too much. And in this case it was significantly more than 2 Oz.

I generally don't buy new mowers, because I just take care of my old ones and they last. Even if I do need another mower, I typically manage to find a freebie often enough, so I'll just keep the better mower and sell off my old one. If I did have a 1 year old mower, I would almost definitely not buy the newer model, because chances are there won't be any problems with my old mower after only 1 year, and also it's very unusual for any significant updates/upgrades to be made to a product in only 1 year, and that goes for more than just lawn mowers. The only reason I would consider upgrading from my 1 year old mower is if there are significant upgrades that will actually help me do a better job, and possibly make more money if I have a grass cutting business. Otherwise it's not really worth spending $400 all over again.

It certainly says a lot that manufacturers are more interested in selling you a new piece of equipment every few years than selling you a quality product that will last for a decade or more. Case in point, I have a 18" Bobcat mower... 3.5 hp B&S, purchased new in 1978...it is a trim mower that I use on edges and areas that my 48" Scag can't get to. This mower has been used at least 30 minutes a week, April-November since new. Regular maintenance and I run av-gas or mo-gas...no ethanol. I know that this is an anomaly, but still, today, bottom line rules over quality and salvage yards and landfills are full of equipment that should still be in service
