I feel your pain. House built in 1959. Have to replace these every couple of years. Literally drives me crazy each time. I use a pair of long needle nose pliers with lots of toothpaste. Be sure and grease up the black seals and o-rings with human grade silicone grease. Makes them turn easier and last longer. Great video.

I was smiling the whole time I was watching waiting for you to reveal the "Tooth Paste Trick".... Ive been a contractor for 42 years and the solution was right there the whole time... Fill the rubber boot of the seat spring with the tooth paste, cover the outside with the tooth paste as well... put tooth paste on your finger... with it all lined up on you finger tip and the outside slathered with tooth paste insert the seat and spring assembled... The tooth paste holds it there all assembled even if wet... insert valve assembly... screw it all back together and boom its done... 15 minutes and its all fixed... Your welcome! :)

Thanks. I did it a couple of years ago and suffered trying to keep that spring and rubber boot together. It never worked right. I decided to tackle it again so I watched some videos doing the install and just stumbled across your comment. Note to self: Always read the comments. I had both H&C installed in about 20 minutes. Your tip is sincerely appreciated. P.S. Be sure and rub a little silicone grease on the rubber boot and washer. Makes it super easy to turn off and on. 🤠

I used plumbers silicone grease to hold the seat and spring in place . Went in with no problem. Also, if you get a paper cup and cut it in half length wise and use it as a troughed, you’ll save the seat from falling down behind the wall.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video, if you have to do this in the future, the silicone grease that they sell in small tubes will definitely help the rubber to slide in a little bit easier , and make sure that the rubber is all the way flat, fully inserted, sometimes that little rubber part doesn’t want to sit flat without pressing it, and I found that it’s best to use the old springs because some of the new ones that are smaller and stiffer don’t work as easily , adding the silicone grease will make turning the water on and off easier as others have stated 🏁😎👍

OMG. Female here. I feel like I am changing this washer every 6 months or so. Been in my home about 15 years before the part went out. (They must be making the rubber cheaper now) Anywho like you, I have spent hours trying to get the darn thing back in. You gave me the idea to use a sharpened pencil. What a difference a day makes. While in place with pencil still in, i was able to take the flat side of a screw and push it in enough (on both sides) then gently took the pencil out. Then Pushed it in further with the flat part of screw and it stayed. 🔥🔥 (Hint) for others. You don’t have to have two people, but it’s easier to have someone hold a flash light while you look in the dark hole. All the best…

Thank you for posting this video y helped make things very easy. I did the stick thing and somebody mentioned to use hand soap on the seat before trying to put it in the hole. With the combination of the stick like you suggested and the soap in took me less than 5 minutes to replace each seat. I was ready to spend a couple of hours. No more leaks.

Thank you! Whoever installed mine must have lost the spring for the cold side and just left it out. I've had a slow drip for years. I got a spring and new rubber washer, put them on a dull pencil, pushed them in place, and used a flathead screwdriver to hold the washer in place while I pulled the pencil out. I probably didn't even need to replace the stem unit, but I already had it so I did.

Good video very helpful, thanks! I will try the stick method if using needle nose pliers fails. I volunteered to help a friend who has a very similar problem with a laundry tub with the seat mounted horizontal but it isn't even facing me it is to the side. This design when mounted horizontally is without a doubt the dumbest I have ever seen. Hanging those who approved this design would be far too kind a fate.

I have a weird problem. I thought I had done everything right. When I turn the water on, it comes on, but if I turn it off all the way until the knob stops, it is still running. If I don't turn it all the way off, but stop turning the knob before it hits the hard stop, it will stop running. It's pretty weird and I know it's not supposed to do that. Does anyone know how to fix this?
