I have a bad AC compressor that will cost me $1,500 to repair. Auto shops say I can still drive the car as long as I don’t turn the AC button on, because it will potentially overheat my engine and destroy it. Will this affect me from getting my oil changes?

Thanks for the awesome advice. My AC compressor locked up. The mechanic that looked at it didn't mention anything about the metal debris in the condenser so I am so happy you showed me that information before I spent the money on a new compressor just to have it lock up on me also. Nice to know there are videos like yours to educate people like me that are not mechanically inclined to fix cars. Especially when your on a strict budget raising kids on your own.

Well, if with locked up you mean the clutch no longer engages, you could have a perfect compressor with a fucked up clutch coil (most manufacturers put, along with a rectifier diode in parallel with the coil, a thermal fuse in series with the coil on the coil's face so that if the clutch starts slipping for whatever reason the resulting heat immediately cuts the compressor clutch off; this thermal fuse however has an habit of going off from time to time on an otherwise perfectly healthy compressor without a certain reason; as soon as that happens you often have a lot of people who think it's time for a regas and go ask one only to be told that the required repair is a lot more expensive than a simple regas or to waste money on a completely useless regas and then discover that the compressor is at fault).

I also flush the lines with a flush chemical specifically for automotive air conditioning and then use compressed nitrogen to get out what the flush missed and speed up the evaporation of the chemical flush if it was bad as the Dodge in the video. Other than that, compressed nitrogen works fine by itself. Love your videos.

You should definately replace the reciever dryer when doing this as well as flushing the lines. A flush gun is cheeap nowadays and will get at lot of crud out. Also replace the orifice tube if so equipped as those get plugged to hell and when putting in a new condenser always throw an oz or so of oil in the new one!

+Peter Carlson Not true. If the compressor is of the fixed displacement type a thermistor on the evaporator de-energizes the compressor clutch whenever evaporator temp gets below freezing point. With a variable displacement compressor (ex. Delphi CVC), a pressure valve senses the decreasing pressure in the suction pipe from the evaporator (ice on the evaporator prevents heat transfer from the air to the expanding gas so less gas expands and therefore smaller pressure) and automatically reduces the compressor displacement so less gas goes through the evaporator. So unless you mess with the system, you can't get below a certain vent temperature.

Hi Scotty, great video. I have a 1991 Ford Explorer. The a/c compressor locked up but once I turned it off, then turned it back on, it worked. However, it locked up again. So, I got a new one. Guess what, it locked up! Turned it off, then back on. This new one has been working fine for over a year and half since that lock up. But, I am thinking, the metal fragments are probably sitting somewhere inside the condenser and lurking around for another opportunity to seize up the compressor. Would that be a correct assessment? I have noticed there are times when the a/c system heats up a bit and I can feel the humidity building inside the car. I have noticed that the compressor is starting to smoke a bit although not seizing. But it still leads me to believe it's those metal fragments you showed and it's causing friction on the clutch mechanism. So in order to fix this, probably time to do as you have show and replace the compressor and the condenser. Would you recommend also replacing the drier and evaporator as well? Thanks for your time and advice.

I have not yet investigated the locked AC compressor on my 2000 Ford F250, ... but I'm fortunate someone figured it out before I donated the vehicle away! The serpentine belt unexpectedly locked up (the AC was off) within minutes of driving away on a November morning. The engine wouldn't turn over unless the belt was removed, but then it starts fine ... So does this mean that the compressor and the clutch assembly are both bad? I'm trying to understand if whether a clutch failure alone could cause the belt to lock up? >

At the end of the video, you tapped on the condenser and metal fragments came out. Then you said, if you would have kept the old condenser, the metal fragments would have caused the new compressor to fail. So what you're saying is: the metal fragments would have found their way though the condenser and circulated around the system and back into the compressor. Is that correct? With that being said, what makes you so sure some of the metal fragments didn't exit the old condenser before you changed it, and find their way into other components of the system? Can you guarantee the entire A/C system is metal fragment-free even after you replaced the old condenser?

At times, overwhelming. The condenser has a replaceable desiccant bag in the receiver drier housing. You can see that when he talks about the receiver drier on the condenser. I get it. Large metal fragmentation from the compressor clogs the passages inside the condenser before it makes its way to the desiccant bag, but you don't have to replace the condenser every time you replace a compressor. Factory service information typically does state to replace a receiver drier or accumulator if you open a system. Customers would freak out at the expense of repairs if every Tech installed a new condenser for every compressor failure. I say this for one, because the factory service manual's do not say, replace condenser every time a compressor mechanically fails. There are instructions for using Qtips, inserting and swabbing at different points in the system looking for signs of metal fragmentation and watching for dark colors - of oil, to determine what has taken place internally with a compressor. Some manufacturers call it, black or grey death. 2nd, Technicians and Parts Sale People need to be very careful about selling parts and labor to Customers, if they don't need them. That will and has gotten people and businesses into big trouble with the BBB. Its good for what it is. Often, I use his videos to teach people what not to do. At times I cringe and feel embarrassed for the guy. He could benefit from an independent technical editor from time to time. At the same time, he seems to be cheerful and he works hard at trying to help people. I am surprised at how popular he is and how many companies post his videos on their sites. At times, he gets way out there in far left field

Not normal for the compressor shaft to seize, if it does then your system has been starved of oil and the compressor started eating itself. You probably mean that the clutch plate stopped being pulled onto the pulley by the magnet due to the low pressure switch preventing the magnet coil to energize. In that case the compressor didn't lock up.
@gironimo800
@gironimo800 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what it was. Bearing failure? On its last weeks heard a clicking sound coming from compressor and it was not efficiently blowing cold as if it were low on r34 and finally heard the frightening squeal. When I took it apart did see metal shards(like silvery paste) around the hose entry/exit on the compressor and some black residue in the tubes like it burned up. I didn't properly maintain it before this. Was afraid of skipping the step of flushing the evap and tubes but the mechanic said if it blows out usually clogs the condenser and that is where the problem lies. Still blowing cold fingers crossed.
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to be completely sure, source a new compressor, condenser, receiver drier and expansion valve (piping and evaporator can be easily flushed, the other parts not; a junkyard compressor is more than enough, while the other parts are better if new, OEM is enough). Not normal at all to have it lock up and then see metal shards and black residue inside the circuit, it probably ran starved of oil (whatever you do, your circuit loses some oil, and gas with it, each year, more if you don't run it at least 10 minutes a month like it's done with bus HVAC systems; in my car, after 5 years the gas amount lowered from the normal 500g to 220g and the compressor became noisier even though the AC still cooled up stuff good but a little too slow for my taste, and that's when i decided to have it regassed, and now the compressor is quieter and chilling air comes in 10 secs). Your compressor is probably living its last hours.
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 6 жыл бұрын
And if you remove the compressor or have it removed remember to salvage the old clutch assembly (pulley+coil). It can still be useful if you have issues with the new compressor or you can still sell it to someone who has a worn or locked up bearing or a shorted/open circuit coil.

To clean spray manifold lines with brake cleaner, use compressed air with a shop rag on other end. I'm not really a mechanic I'm just very curious.

When I replaced my compressor, the new one came with too much oil in it and it was also the wrong type (PAG 46 instead of PAG 100). I would say to double check those things as well if you are doing this yourself.

I usually gut that stuff out of my car and set it a side in case i sell the car. Right on the shelf with the smog pump, sometimes its just easier to plug vacuum lines than replace them, and the car gets moving faster without those parts.

I understand they actually check emissions there, i have been stopped by police for loud exhaust, but the officer refused to crawl under the car with me to point out where he though the pipe was broken.... No ticket that day😓

Yea, bigtime. all under hood stuff and dyno the car on a dyno at road speeds and check emissions, all the way down to the gas cap. bad gas cap and u don't pass emission test. no registration for you! hard core in cali.!

The pressure goes One direction through the condenser and comes out the other side always. I seriously doubt that the little pieces will make their way through all the little passages in the condenser and come out the other side. They have to go through the evap canister and they'll settle at the bottom.

Scotty, great channel, thanks. My 2003 Camry just had a unintended acceleration event while pulling into a parking space. The tach seemed to peg. I floored the brakes and put into park shut off car, upon restart all seemed normal. Any ideas? Car has 62k miles. Scary, if I had panicked the car would have launched into the car in front of me.

wouldn't there be metal parts also in the ac lines? I have a 2013 GMC Terrain 2.4L with a locked-up AC compressor. I saw another video where the mechanic said the lines compressor condenser and evaporator along with the lines all need to be replaced when a compressor locks ups. He stated you will never get all the metal fragments out and eventually the metal fragments will make their way back to the new compressor destroying it again.

Hey Scotty, Your videos are the best! I had 2 questions. I have a 07 civic that has a separate dryer. Does this still need to be replaced if the compressor and condenser are replaced? Also, is the vacuum pump a must have in order to ensure that the compressor lasts? Thanks!!
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 8 жыл бұрын
yes, replace the direr and you have to vacuum out the system before refilling it, realize auto zones loan vacuum pumps free
@jackdawkins821

Oil compensation? The new pump will have the oil for the entire system, there's a chance of hydraulic locking the new pump.You need to drain the old compressor and the new one and match the oil drained from the old compressor and make sure the new pump has that amount.

If the refrigerant didn't leak out and you needed to evacuate it, would that contaminate the AC recovery machine with fine metal particles? How would you prevent that from happening?

Hey Scotty enjoy your content. I have a 04 Chrysler Sebring 4 cyl with a bad ac compressor. Whenever I would turn it on it would seize and make the belt smoke. I have since disconnected power to the compressor and even the relay that goes to the ac clutch relay so the clutch won't turn on and seize up. I've been driving okay without the compressor and have been wondering if it is okay to drive. The AC pulley spins just fine but is there a risk of the ac pulley seizing and snapping the belt? Don't have the cash or health to get it replaced for now.

bluebladex3 if the belt only smoked when you turned the AC on, it will be fine to drive the car with the way you have it now
@William1866

I did the same thing 4 years ago. You have to disconnect the power to it because the AC clutch will engage in the heat/defrost setting. I didn't mess with the relay, just snipped the wires going into the compressor.

When your compressor wears out it locks up. Anything on that belt won't work because the belt breaks. I had to have my car towed.

Hi Scotty, my son Joey and I are huge fans of your channel and videos. He is a car fanatic, he's 20 years old now, and he's been a car fan since he was 2. I gave him my 2007 Toyota 4Runner Limited and he loves it. We've recently encountered an AC problem. The AC clutch does not work. Replaced the relay and still not working. I thought I would replace the ac compressor complete and we can do a father/son DIY auto repair project. I'm pretty good with most repairs, not like your self of course. However, It would be a good repair experience for him and my self. Question: Is the replacement for the ac compressor in this vehicle just the full compressor and orifice tube and the receiver dryer when replacing the compressor since some of the debris may have ended up there? I've never done a ac compressor before. Your input would be super appreciated Scott. Thank you if and for responding. You are the man!!! Dave & Joey DIY for lifers.

I just had my ac compressor lock up on my ford Explorer the other day.... they said at the dealer it's going to need a new compressor, belt and thankfully the dryer is separate so I won't need a new condenser
