I decided it was time to pull the old hay rake out of the trees and brush. A few trees had grew up right through it! It has been setting for at least 25 years! I remember when I was about 5 years old my Great Grandfather used this rake. Soon after he sold his baler and parked the rake. Since then it has set and water and rust had made their way into every moving part.
There is a certain draw for me to make old things work again. Especially things that have history or family ties. One of my favorite things to do is get something old and take it apart and figure out how it works. My Great Grandfather stopped mowing hay before I was old enough to learn about the equipment he used. I knew nothing about this old hay rake going in. All I knew was it was supposed to turn and rake hay into a windrow.
Looking at this old rake it looked like it would never run again. Like it was time for it to be yard art or go to the junk yard. After a few tubes of grease and a lot of oil. Things began to move again. Now I had some hope that my Great Grandfather’s old hay rake just might rake hay again. And better yet behind his old Ford 8n tractor.
