Fixing a Remis Skylight Winder mechanism

Fixing a Motorhome Remis Skylight Winder and cleaning the gearing to the hinges. ORIGINAL PROBLEM=The handle started clicking and then after forcing the handle snapped off. With the mechanism removed the time consuming part is the removal of all the hairs between the spiral wire using a wire brush. The spiral wire was then covered in copper grease before inserting back into the black metal guide pipes to each hinge. White lithium grease was sprayed on the cogs and sliding components. If the handle has snapped then a sirclip releases the handle from the lowered inner facia. A tip after repair is to always push up/support weight of Perspex skylight when opening.

Thanks Dave. I was brave enough to tackle it once I had seen your video. Just a little tip when getting rid of the bristles. Blowlamp them off, much quicker as long as you don't get too close to the plastic end. Thanks again.

Thanks Dave, your video was really helpful. My winder mechanism became tight & the locking clips stopped closing down completely. Having removed winding mechanism, cleaned & greased the spiral wire & the gearbox as you described it’s now working perfectly as before. My vehicle is a 2009 chausson flash. I would add that it’s important to be careful to evenly support the whole mechanism as you remove it from motohome & carry it to wherever you’re going to dismantle.

Dave, many thanks for this really useful video. I have just serviced my winder on a Chasson, and it works great now. If anyone finds that one latch locks before the other, just even up the tails of the springs when you reassemble the winder. A bit of playing around will ensure that they both lock.

Thanks Dave for the video, and especially for your written explanation down below. These bits of additional info are very necessary as I didn't get the complete picture from the video. I have a 2,000 mile, 5 year old AutoSleeper which I have just bought and although I could just take it back to the dealer to get it fixed, with your video and written notes I can probably do it myself so long as nothing is actually broken. This is yet another angry moment because absolutely no car manufacturer would tolerate the poor quality of products and workmanship that go into motorhomes. It doesn't seem to matter what make you get, I have had four new motorhomes in the last seven years and their build quality has been universally rubbish. Specially the French ones and now the supposed best of British.

Hi. Nice vid. Here in Norway is almost impossible to find parts for remis. Do u have a clue where I could get a gear kit for that mechanism?? The shaft that goes to the handle was broken in half( was already broken when I bought It). Thanks

Took mine apart clean it all up worked fine on the bench with no real load put back on the motorhome almost worked started slipping when nearly closed. Will have another try another day.

My skylight doesn’t “lock” anymore when lowered and I always push / support the skylight when raising.

You talk about left & right. One side has a dog leg how do I know which side is which.

Hi, thanks for this video, I followed the steps but could not open the plastic gear box casing, didn’t want to break it, do you need to pull the black plastic wires from it before getting in to the gears?

Hi from Australia Dave and thanks for this post as the local supplier of REMIS - AL- KO don't want to know about the problem of fixing a broken handle. I checked the REMIS website section for Q&A and saw your post. In that you mention you looked at the manual. Where did you get a copy of the manual for this skylight? I don't see anywhere on the "leisureshop" website. I'm out bush and don't have any local repair shop so will have to try to effect some repairs myself. Anything you can suggest will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Evan Flower.

Mine got this issue it's not opening Under its own weight with assistance it opens but does not lock and it clicks where did you get your repair kit from I think my gear Box is damaged

I got my spares from leisureshopdirect website and I have just checked they do have gearbox spares www.leisureshopdirect.com/ventilation/caravan-roof-vent/remis-rooflights-and-spare-parts/remis-remitop-vario-ii-rooflights-and-spare-parts/gearwheel-kit-for-remis-vario-ii-900-x-600 Hope this helps Michael but some Remis items have a 4 week delivery estimate. They also have lots of other Remis parts on the site so have a browse.

@@SharkeySmith Hi Dave thanks for all the info it is great, I have just stripped my gearbox down and carried out the whole procedure as you described using copper grease/lithium grease de- brisling The spiral wires and reassembled The whole thing back into the skylight but unfortunately still when trying to open the skylight it will not budge without clicking and only go’s up when assisting by lifting the Perspex dome ,I’ve noticed as soon as the clicking has happened then the spiral wires go out of sync with each other and the two locking hooks do not engage sequential as they should When closing , I have come to the conclusion that it would be better to replace the whole lifting mechanism If available, mine is a Autotrail Cheyenne 696G 2007, I’m assuming it’s the same as yours a 900 x 600 rooflight, do you know if this is the Remis Vario 1or Vario 2 model , I have had a look on the leisure shop direct Website and the lifting mechanism they sell for the Vario 2 does not resemble the same as mine

Paul Fallon Hi Paul, I’m not sure which version it is. Have you tried refitting. My hooks don’t engage on closing but the roof light still opens smoothly and I always reach up with my arm to relieve some of the weight as given as a tip somewhere on the internet. Good Luck
