While most properly will be so am I not sure if a full on unasked for Case replacement is a good idea given that for a number of reasons (be there looks or sentiment feelings) could a orignal owner want to keep his technically worse case.

I LOVE the work Greg did, it is honestly the best Gaming PC I've had my whole life, and he even made my computer run 100x better, faster. Fantastic job, couldn't have asked for a better fix.

Also to mention, the PC was a hand-me-down, and all BestBuy had was that TT AIO. I am definitly going to upgrade MB, Processor and Ram later down the road. But for now, it may be low-end to current Gen, but it's running everything 10x smoother, and I can even play HL: Alyx now.

Thermal Take instructions are like trying to read Hieroglyphics, I threw the manual away and KZfaqd it. Missing screws, I wasn't aware as the uploader wasn't too thorough.

I am a manufacturing engineer that specializes in circuit board assembly and soldering. I call that tell-tale smell "a sign that your day is going to be terrible" when it happens in a factory. I also am not an electronics expert (ironic, I know) but that's why we have test/electrical engineers. They tell me which part let out the magic smoke and my job is to figure out how the manufacturing process went awry and hopefully prevent it from happening again.

Man seeing that PSU makes me feel bad. I gave a friend a similar Thermaltake power supply before he moved away, simply as I swapped to a 80+ platinum unit from evga. Seeing this video is just feels bad for me.

Oh, definitely in Heaven. It's amazing with how smooth everything runs now. My boot times used to be around 3-4 minutes, it now boots up within 1-2 min, sometimes even below that. Every time I power the computer on, I act like a kid on Christmas.

I've done IT for about 15 years. I respect the fact you're up front, honest, and showing people the proper way to isotest and just do basic maintenance. This video is extremely straightforward and I respect that.

He has a great case and a new power supply and a good GPU. He just needs to spend $200 on a Motherboard, CPU and memory and he is better off than most people who don't have a GPU. A RX 580 with 8GB is a good place to start.

A new 10400F plus B-series motherboard, and 2x8 GB DDR4 3200 and he gets a nice system to upgrade later when GPU prices become something rational again (sigh...maybe 2-3 years?)

People like to dump on old hardware but realistically a 580 8GB is good enough for even most new games at medium settings 1080p 60hz. Super enjoyable experience for probably 99% of people. We bleeding edge enthusiasts are really just a very vocal minority when it comes to the overall customer base I would think. Hell my last 2 upgrades have netted me zero real world performance. I'd still be getting the same 144 FPS at 1440p in all the games I actually play on my old 7700K/1080Ti build, which I upgraded to a 9900K/2080Ti, which I upgraded to a 10900K/3080.

Yep. Either it's playing up due to RAM (which can sometimes be the case, some boards will power cycle on and off if the RAM is 'out' by even a few mm) or it's immediate that the PSU is suspect; FIRST thing he should have done was run that PSU on the tester.

I knew from how the power cut off immediately after being powered on. Designed to prevent further damage it will cut its self off as soon as something goes wrong (well suppose to). Guy is lucky that rest of the system didnt get fried. Last time i had a psu die on me it took my 2tb hdd with it that had somewhat important stuff on it (seagates data recovery covered it but found nothing)...

You should make a Fix or Flop shelf/cabinet for the background of all the bad components that you have replaced. Of course name it somewhere "Fix or Flop". It would look pretty awesome IMO in the background when you make videos/stream. Unless you already threw away bunch of those components. It was just a thought and would show that you've helped tons of people with their PCs. I wish people didn't buy pre-bulits but built their rigs themselves. They would gain lots of knowledge and would be able to troubleshoot themselves, would save a good chunk of $$$ and would be able to customize their rigs to whatever they desire. It's much easier than it looks for us builders with 10 or more years of experience... although I was already overclocking, modding and troubleshooting with my first build back in the day. It's much easier now "with decent mobos" it will throw you a code or at very least show you tiny LED light to which component is bad or has some kind of issues. I wish, we had those things back in the day.

You have a high moral standard, my friend. I could see many people happily charge MSRP for parts, while making sure to remind people that the "labor" is free to get sympathy. I really respect that you are honest about the fact that companies send free parts around constantly for advertising, so you don't feel comfortable charging anything. Much respect, brotha.

Good memories with the HAF 812 here! I removed the optical drive and hard drive cages and built my first custom water-cooled loop in one a few years ago. Rocked a i5 7600k and a GTX 1080ti and just recently sold it for about double the amount I put into it. Good times!

my HAF 922 (bigger model) is still under my desk (sadly for it It hasn't run once since I got my new laptop earlier this year) it ran very well for many many years (i5 3570k OCed), and it has always been insanely cool with a nice cooler master hyper 212

If you enjoy this, then you should really get PC Building Simulator.. it's exactly what he's doing .. you take over a computer repair shop, and accept which client emails you want to fix .. they send you their computers and you have to diagnose the problem and make the repairs with real world components/brands.. it's super addictive and if you havent played it, then you owe it to yourself.

this episode of FoF was my favorite. The visual change of that old case and the fix of the "twister" esque cable management on top of the PSU was awesome to see once it was all put back together. As soon as I seen that TT PSU, I expected it. Just never had good luck with their PSU's. Least the owner didn't have any hardware damaged from the PSU. Never want to go cheap on the PSU. Awesome case though! Looks like a brand new pc for the owner!

I was thinking exactly the same when I saw that psu. I've had many psu's over the years and the worst one was Thermaltake. It caused some random crashes and for some reason that psu internally shorted a few times and caused system to power off. I had to insulate the psu case cover myself to keep using it as I was still saving for a new one. Luckily it didn't break anything else with it... I still have Enermax psu that I bought after that and it still works fine in my home server even though it's around 10 years old and it has been used heavily over the years.

Thermaltake sucks I have a Thermaltake 450W with only Ryzen 1800x + Mobo without GPU and it popped under cinebench. Replaced the fuse and still Thermaltake popped the fuse.

This is by far my favorite series of your of videos. As a technician (copiers and printers) I enjoy the process. We call that the Sherlock Holmes method of diagnosis. Eliminate what it isn't. Whatever is left, however unlikely, must be the answer.

In addition to your DMM, you may also want to pick up a capacitance tester. When you opened that PSU, the first thing I'd check after allowing bleed-off, is those caps on the side where you smelled the magic smoke.

Not surprised, that is a bad PSU and it wasn't good when it was brand new either. It's one of those "slap big wattage number on it, cut lots of corners on the components and design, then sell to unsuspecting people for really cheap" models that were quite popular a while back. At least it's not one of the PSUs that completely removes all the filtering circuits to cut costs and claims 600W out of a 250W unit, but I doubt that makes you feel any better when it bricks. Well maybe it does, at least it doesn't look like this one bricks the entire rest of your PC with it.

Really enjoy all of your series, but I especially enjoy the FoF. I started building, fixing up and sorting PCs and laptops during lockdown as a hobby, and 12 months later I've now sorted over 240 PCs. Building gaming PCs has always been the best part, and more recently I've found buying up older or broken systems to be the best option for satisfying my hobby. I love rejuvenating an older, poorly balanced or broken system (new case makes a massive difference) and watching your FoF is exactly the kind of stuff that gives me ideas as to what to look at. Keep up the great work, fantastic content :)

That transformation was incredible it literally looked like a brand brand new system, that case is a great choice too. Mounting the card vertically was a great choice too. I really enjoy this series I’m glad it’s growing!

The vertical mount is bad for the aiorflow and blocks the other PCIe slots.

Thermaltake PSU, that would have been my first step to this troubleshoot. I've had mostly bad experience with their PSUs, particularly the cheap and/or old ones.

I have a thermaltake 1200 watt psu - been going strong for at least 12 years only cleaned it once !

Thermaltake is very hit or miss with quality. My system’s thermaltake $50 PSU has been going strong for years, whereas I’ve seen friends’ systems exact same model die in a few months.

@@herbetrono4373 Your single good experience doesn't invalidate my half dozen or so bad experiences. There was one time I thought the issue was the TT PSU, but it was a fried motherboard. A month or two later I was replacing the customer's motherboard again along with the thermaltake PSU... That'll teach me.

Mr. Salazar can i ask something? If my pc slows down every restart and file transfer causes bsod or drops from 100mbps to kbps and shows unexpected store exception and memory management does that mean i have to change memory sticks?

Wait did you replace a HAF 932 case? The HAF are the best airflow cases even by today's standards. If I could get a HAF X over the be quiet case any day.

Yes, I replaced the HAF case. The 802 is still fine for airflow, and the three 140mm PW2 fans are great.

I always hope he asked if he could replace the case - I love my msi mag forge 100r even though its a cheap case and if he changed it I'd be very unhappy even if he'd replaced it with a £500 case free of charge.

I really like seeing all the cool build and tech videos people do but seeing reasonable/affordable machines be troubleshooted has been the biggest help for me as a beginner builder. Love it!

Tips : 1. If you can hear a long tiiiiiiiiiiiiiii from your PSU. There is a leak in one of the caps. 2. If you can smell something fried it's most likely the MOSFETs under the heatsink. 3. You can also get 24v, 8.7v, 7v, 21.7v,19v from your PSU.

I love these videos, this is a type of profession I want to get into (Repairing computers ect, it's mostly undoable since most of the business' don't earn much profit), so i'm a little proud of myself when i looked at the build and heard the diagnosis and thought "Sounds like a power supply issue." Nice to see another person prepping the CM HAF line of cases. They're not perfect but my HAFX has some really convenient features for the time when I got it. It was also really cheap for the time given it's features. It's a great thing you're doing helping and teaching some troubleshooting points. Thank you!

Hey Greg, as someone new to the tech space and fascinated by the hardware side of PC building/repair I am in LOVE with FoF! Keep it up! Do you ever pull the hardware completely out of the case to do the testing once you realize it’s going to be a hardware swap game to find the issue? Or is the juice not worth the squeeze from a time standpoint?
