I'm glad it worked out this way. I'm currently working on my cable management and waiting for a fan hub before I tackle connecting everything and if my system doesn't post I'll know what to look for thanks to this series. I also noticed a bent capacitor (one of the plastic ones at the lower left hand corner. My board is almost like the one in this video) that I bent back in place but it was after I finally got my mobo seated and screwed in. I was told that shouldn't matter in the end unless it came loose in which case I'd either have to RMA (have a month to do so) or solder. Fingers crossed I have no issues come Monday or Tuesday.

Greg, you know we builders will never confess to damaging a CPU socket (pins), it's like the ultimate failure in any build! LOL

I carefully take out the stupid plastic socket protector before installing the CPU. I always feel like its going to fall into the socket and catch on a pin.

LGA 1700 motherboards aren't cheap. It's like crumpling a couple of hundred dollars into a ball, pouring gasoline on it then flicking lit matches at it.

On my very first build the video I was following for a step by step (I won't call them out) did not mention they were using an intel CPU. I had a Ryzen one. When my cover didn't automatically lift off the board when I lifted the retention clip, I went to go lift it manually. Ryzen does not have a CPU socket cover I found out. Luckily I was one of the few that Newegg allowed a return on without much issue.

I agree. I don't think I could handle a problem that takes that much precision. It's literally surgery only on a computer and as I'd imagine (but would neverr want to experience) something like shaky hands could ruin it.

With how much I've heard of bent LGA pins meaning death, I'm extremely impressed you managed to fix them with a needle. Nice grit, Greg.

I can tell you that they can. I was trying to fix a dozen of bent pins on the LGA1150. Three of them was bent so much, that they fall off while I was trying to unbend them. I think someone dropped a CPU onto them (and that's not the worst part) and then tried to fix it with his nails (that damaged it more). Now the only solution is to change the whole socket. But without proper tools it's impossible. And the board, while it's very nice (a SaberTooth z87) isn't worth the investment.

@@GregSalazar dude i think the viewer just needed a new cooler coz the prev one had pump failure and he got what he wanted for free. no one is dumb enough to put a stock cooler from 3 gen prior on an i7 12700k.

The biggest frustration is windows 10/11 troubleshooting, it relies on the start menu, if you can't access the start menu, then you're fucked

I build pcs for family and friends, recently i built one with son for him. Cpu pins was something i went over in detail and how to hold and treat both cpu and pins. It was a great bonding expirience as he built about 80% of it and the look on his face with that initial post was worth it. Another great episode.

This series has been invaluable to me both in learning an order in which to troubleshoot and also in remembering NEVER to assume based on the symptoms. As such, I have managed to fix a major issue with one of my PCs and tidy up some niggling issues in the other one, all for only the cost of parts on one and a bit of my time. No outlay to repair stores. Thank you so much for this, especially for not editing out when you come to the wrong conclusion. I find seeing mistakes is as important as seeing solutions. Keep up the outstanding work!

great video yet again Greg! I've fixed in past few bent LGA pins and TBH it is risky and not easy job, you got to have a precise control of your hand to do this safely. I'm glad you were able to resolve this issue, and props for giving him this cooler definitely huge upgrade from the incompatible prior generation cooler. about no signal symptom without Q-Code display I would have check the error LEDs (if the board has them), and I would have tried using on board graphics checking ram and so until focusing on the CPU. but I think that if I've asked the right question I might got a hint about the issues with the socket. any way good job!

It also goes to show you no matter your tech experience in trying to make the process quicker, even the logical path you choose doesn't always save you the time your think it will! Always love those FOF videos with giving me new ideas of how to approach errors that eventually might appear on systems. Thanks for keeping the series up, you do some great work with them. I had a weird issue myself this morning when trying to turn on my pc that's been rock solid for the last 3-4 months since my last install of a new AIO. It wouldn't post, it would only show a cursor on one of my 2 monitors and refuse to move any further from that. I tried to restart a few times, same issue, power cycled the PSU, same issue. After some headscratching I disconnected one of my external HDD's by unplugging the power to it and boom system up running again. I still have no idea why that would stop my system from posting, but glad I could figure it out that quickly anyway.

For future reference, a little heat in those pins and you'll reduce the risk of snapping them off. Good work!! 👍

Love the series, it's very useful to learn and see problems that don't happen everyday. Even if you fix computers all day long there are things that happen so scarcely you honestly start forgetting and need to refresh from time to time. Definitely the best playlist on the channel. TY for fixing the motherboard stand-offs, they were giving me a bit of anxiety for most of the video :), brought back bad memories of a boss I had that would attach any motherboard with just 2 screws to "save time" *shivers*. Also, if there was enough cable to do so, I would have taped the SSD to the back of the motherboard tray instead of the PSU, no big deal I just try to avoid anything near the PSU as much as possible.

This series is awesome! For the better part of my life, I've always neglected my pcs and instead I would either pay someone to have a friend build them for me. After watching your channel for over 6 months now. I've finally built up my confidence and motivation! I managed to finally build my very own first pc 4 months ago which worked perfectly first try and I've made a habit of cleaning it at least once a month. Love the fix or flop. Its what got me into watching/finding your channel. I've been in IT for almost 20 years and I love watching your process, but truly enjoy how you provide detail to keep it interesting and informative at the same time. In regards to process I would have started like you with the reseating ram and clearing bios, but I would have gone into unseating the PSU CPU connector and putting it onto a tester to ensure PSU was providing power to socket. I also would have been having a heart attack seeing that cooler on the CPU.

Yep... it's a super PITA process, but I've brought back quite a few boards like this and it's always super satisfying. I think I was just as happy as you when it finally posted. And all that space on the backside for mounting SSDs, the whoever made the case didn't use any of it.

Outstanding fix on this one!! I have only a single time fixed a bent pin (and only a single pin) and had it work. Hats off for your effort... Had I saw that nearly a dozen pins were damaged, I would have simply hit the Amazon or Newegg site and got a new motherboard full stop. When you said it was a cooler off of a lower generation cpu, I wondered how that was even possible, with the different size cpu chip and all... So.... you showed me. It will physically bolt on, but covers only about 75% of the chip. Good call with changing that out.

I recently fixed a Z97 with severely bent pins and it had the same symptoms as this if some pins weren't making contact. Occasionally some would, then I'd randomly get RAM beep codes. In the end, I finally got it. But you wouldn't believe how perfectly aligned the pins need to be sometimes. On LGA 1151 I've had a perfect socket where RAM wouldn't work just because one pin was slightly off (barely visible to the naked eye) before too. You did a great job fixing these pins and not giving up.

Great job! I’ve never done LGA pins before but I have done the pins on the AMD chips and I remember it being a ballache. I’m too heavy handed to be doing jobs that finicky! Love the series!

I had to fix a 3900x that had about 50 bent pins from a 10 year old trying to build his own computer at my job, one of the most stressful moments of my life.

I just fixed a LGA-1200 socket with bent pins this weekend, same symptoms as this machine. Those pins are NOT fun to fix. Much respect to you for fixing your viewers mistake and providing your knowledge to your viewers for free. Keep up the great content!

thing about pins is you need a good magnifying glass to see them correctly. tons of patience, and a paper thin flat object to bend the pins evenly. Great job Greg !!

@@ThePhoenix198 Yes LGA is really tough to fix but doable. tweezers work well to grab and bend where needed. I had to bend a friends Threadripper mobo pins back and it took a few days to get it just right. had 1/2 the pins bent in, from dropping CPU waterblock on it just before cpu was in.
