Fixing an air hose reel cam that won't "catch" and stay extended, easy DIY fix

I originally called this "The reel truth"... I thought it was funny but with my humor... I am better off fixing things.
The hose reel would reel out, but the cam(key, depending where you live) wouldn't catch, so it reeled back in. This video shows you a way to get more life out of the cam by moving its center over a bit.

Thank you. Very clear explanation. Mine may prove to be a little more difficult because it’s fully enclosed so I just need to figure out how to get into the unit. At least now I know what to do once I’m in. 👍

Once you get the center bolt out, it comes apart pretty easily. FYI, this video is from September 2021, and mine is still working great 👍

Thanks. I bought a new reel, mounted it, but never catches. I'll give it a look. You probably saved me a bunch of time replacing my NEW reel

@@GuysPlayingWithTools I took a look at the Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic house reel. It is SO FAR out of alignment that the"foot" doesn't even touch the teeth. It must be at least a ¼ inch between the two pieces

Side note, it's a top 5 convenience tool, it speeds things up a lot and takes a good bit of clutter out of your shop. Try to find a used one, they are out there and they only do 2 things so they can only have 2 problems rewind issues and air leaks... both are easy fixes

What is the other 4 convenience tools in your top five?
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
@@derekpalmer9526 The "gotta have" tools for me are(in order of use) 1. Battery powered screw gun - First tool I go for every time while working on little motors 2. A "box of bits" for the screw gun that holds the bits well, it has to include torx and the smaller socket sizes along with the standard bits 3. A decent set of screwdrivers, including torx and the assorted 2 stroke carb adjustment screwdrivers 4. A line pulling tool. It's a wire with a small hook on one end and a ring on the other. I use it to replace fuel lines on 2 stroke motors. I probably grab it 4 or 5 times a week and it turns replacing fuel lines into a 3 minute job on weedeater, chainsaw or blower 5. Battery 3/8 impact gun. This is a nice tool for pulling blades and wheels and whatnot quickly while working on mowers. You could work without it but it makes jobs go by a lot faster. That leaves out a few that I grab a lot(long pointy pliers, channel locks, hemostats, wrenches, sockets, etc) but it's where I would start if I were building up a tool box for small engines and already had the basics.

Thanks for the video. I just found that my spring was still on, but the tongue was not making any contact. Turns out the nylon nut had worked itself loose, causing the angle of the bolt to change, and thus the tongue would not make contact. 3/4 turn on that nut solved the problem. But for your video, I would not have seen that. Thanks!

@@GuysPlayingWithTools this is pretty much my out look on things. If it’s broke you have nothing to loose. See what makes it tic and fix it. If not successful I learned how it was made/ designed and decide if was a good design or executed well or not. Often I can make a broken piece or fix same. I have retrieved air reels from garbage and fixed them. I have one in the garage and three in my home shop I have 0 money put out. Same for the compressor that supply’s the shop lol. You don’t know till you try. This has saved me thousands of dollars in equipment alone. I take pride in this and usually will clean and or paint items back to a reasonable or better look. People say I’m lucky with all the things I found and fixed but really it just keeping an eye open and the willingness to fallow through once I picked item up. Helps to be kinda handy too but really the feeling of fixing something and putting it to use for little or nothing is awesome to me. Enjoyed what you did and applaud you sir. Most people would have tossed it for me to pick up hahahaha. Always remember if you can’t fix a picked item you can throw it away just as easy as the last guy. 👍

@@johnanthony2545 When I find things left out for garbage that I can fix I call it them "Curb treasures". LOL Trust me, if you find something on my curb, it's got a terminal problem and I already took anything that may come in handy off of it. 🤣 I appreciate the feedback A LOT! When I am having days when the camera is nothing but in the way and it would be easier to turn it off, comments like this remind me that it's worth moving the camera a couple times to show people that things are worth saving.

If you mean the little cam that held the hose out, I just flipped it over and put it back on. It's symmetrical so it fits either way.
