Also known as a “snubber” diode. Make no mistake, back EMF also affects MOSFETs and transistor circuits. I used to be a failure analysis engineer for a SMPS company, and one of the issues that we saw a lot of was that the small transformers that they used would heat up and the glue that held the 2 sides together would fail. As the glue failed, the air gap inside the transformer got bigger and bigger, which changed its characteristics over time, resulting in HUGE back EMF spikes that would eventually wipe out the circuitry that fed the transformer. EXTREME heat and eventually a complete meltdown, literally, of the circuit was the result. Snubber diodes can only take so much abuse before they fail, so we worked on tracking that issue down for a good amount of time before realizing that the root cause was bad glue in the transformer. Picking a suitable diode to use can be tricky because you want to use one that can handle the amount of current that is SUPPOSED to be flowing in the circuit without heating up. If you pick one that can handle far too much current for the task, you risk the diode surviving at the expense of other parts of the circuit that it is meant to protect.

was about to install a soloed to my Masso this week great timing... got a Different Question the Custom button )blank button on Masso f2 screen is that user configurable or does Masso need to modify it for you.

Hi roverttrains There is no blank button on the F2 screen. You will see in the documentation that the blank button you are referring too is where you enter spindle speed. Cheers Peter

Think this protection was build in the masso relay Module?

It is not possible to add protection to the relay contacts on any relay interface module. If diodes are added to the module at manufacture you will be limited to switching DC only and the relay contacts would become polarity conscious. You will also find you can't use them for a lot of applications. It just isn't practical. Cheers Peter

Can you use a simple LED instead? That would also give an indicator as to when the solenoid is switched

Lol, I had to get a heavy duty VGA cable for my setup. The monitor went haywire whenever the motor was running. Lots of streaking/smearing etc. you can also add ferrite cores around the cable, including the monitor cable AND the power cable for your monitor. Also, be careful with how you route your cables etc.
