Fixing bent spindle / axis on reel-to-reel tape recorder (Akai GX-215D)

I couldn't find any replacement spindles, so I figured out a way how to fix them. Maybe there are better ways to do this, but this method solved my problem. I don't think it is possible to get it perfectly centered, but this was a huge improvement. This should work with other machines with similar technology. If the spindle is bent, it can be bent back in place.

I know on my Revox they use brass screws. You have to be VERY careful bending them. They tend to break instead. Great idea using a laser level. 👍

lf all else fails,use a screwdriver w/ a detachable drive bit.The diameter is the same size as the spindle!!!!!

I accidentally broke mine. Now I have to figure out some way to jerry-rig it back together so I can transfer all of my old reels. Any ideas?

Yea that music was probably just some old junk that was on the tape he used to bend the spindle back into place.

Remove the motor and use a square to center the spindle. It must be squared to the motor bearing housing !

can you upload a video of repairing a boombox dual cassette having one side or the other of *both* the cassette spindles needs to be replaced from a donor parts radio? because some previous owner idiot broke the spindles teeth off, I have a dual cassette boombox having the record side where both of the cassette spindles teeth has been broken and needs to be removed and replaced with parts from a donor parts radio.
