In this video, we recap and also show some additional techniques for fixing a deformed Kanna blade and also talk about some tools that you can use to prevent unwanted damage to your Kanna.
It is really a matter of preference on how you wish to keep your tools operating well. Over my time working in carpentry and having spent quite a bit of money on tools, I want to try to keep them looking nice. This being said, I think it is important to know how to fix a Kanna blade and also how to keep them looking nice by using tools that will not adversely damage them.
I often purchase old tools and tried restoring them, whether there is rust or deformation, each tool is different and requires different repairs. I show in this video an Usui Kengo blade that I bought used and have been in the process of repairing. The previous owner probably used a steel hammer when adjusting his / her Kanna.
This video will show you the safest way to repair a deformed blade and also adjust the bevel so that it is optimal for usage. At the end of the video I show an assortment of hammers that range from wood to steel. I wanted to showcase that a steel hammer can cause excessive damage to a Kanna. However, hitting a Kanna with a steel hammer is not bad, it is really personal preference on how you want to treat your tools.
Thank you for watching.

Here is an affiliate link to a Wooden Hammer. I recommend using a wood hammer to prevent unwanted damage to your Kanna blade and block. amzn.to/3IJS2qL

Thank you. Love the mallets. Look like a traditional British mallet but the head is much thinner. Very cool. 🤔 I feel the need to make one now I've seen these

The copper hammer head is much more softer and more forgiving when being used on steel brass is not so for giving it will damage the steel blade if hit incorrectly. But great video on how to take the twist out on the blades. 👍😀😀

Would like to see a video of this gentleman showing how far in or out of the dai the blade needs to be.

This is great information for those of us that would get a kana for example but then be in an area where no one would know how to fix, adjust, or maintain it so it keeps working long after we got it. Not only the need for a hammer but the size shape and type. Where to hit it, what were trying to fix about it etc all great info

I generally make my own wooden hammers but I should get a brass one if I ever get a PROPER kanna because would never want to damage the blade just making adjustments. I'm glad you informed us BEFORE I was able to get a nice and well made one.

Hey I’m in Osaka and west Japan for the next few weeks. Any events happening you know of? You seem super knowledgeable about all the variants of nomi’s and blacksmiths. Any place I can read up on those types of things so I can know what tools come from good makers?
