Good video. It's worth mentioning that, when pounding tuning pins in a grand piano, it's a good idea to first shore up the pin block with a pin block jack (or other means) to prevent the block from possibly cracking.

Thanks you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. It's greatly appreciated. I just bought an old 1960s piano that's out of tune, dampers are bad, some strings buzz on the dampers, some keys are slightly sunk, and a lot of the jacks aren't moving out of the way. So, your videos are helping me in understanding how to tune the whole system up myself and not fall into newbie traps. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the video. I just want to warn viewers that using the 'pin setting' method (where you use a hammer with a pin setter) can do serious damage to a grand (non-upright) piano without support under the pin block. The action would need to be removed and there's a special jig - kind of similar to a modern car jack that can be used to support the pin block while performing this kind of repair.

Hi, I posted a comment a couple up days ago regarding raising my 1922 piano closer to pitch. As mentioned, my tuner did exactly as you just described by resetting the pins, by tapping them deeper into the pin block, as a couple weren't tight enough. Great Info,Thanks. Roj UK

Thanks for watching Kenneth, No you wouldn't need to drill the hole bigger if putting in a larger tuning pin as the reason for the larger pin is so the pin will be tighter in the hole. The difference between tuning pin sizes is only about .006". You wouldn't need a larger size tip either as the difference between the sizes are minimal. The tip may fit slightly different on the larger pins than on the smaller ones, but it will still do the job.

I'd forget the metal sleeves - I never found them any good, and gave up on them thirty years ago. A shim of veneer or even business card is better (or a larger diameter pin). The CA treatment is generally very effective though, and is a minimum-intervention approach. I find it very helpful to use Zap Flexi-Tips on the tube or bottle. They fit most nozzles and give very fine control of dispensing.

My method: I unscrew the tuning pin, moisten the hole several times with PIN TITE using a small cleaning rod. in the same way, I moisten the pin and the strip of thin beech veneer. I screw in the pin right away because then it goes in easily. If I give too much or too thick veneer, then often the pin is difficult to move.
@DavidBoycePiano
@DavidBoycePiano Жыл бұрын
@@bronco6 PinTite is old technology. Much better to use ultra-low-viscosity CA glue. It reacts with the cellulose in the wood, and gives virtually instant results. You can try it without removing the pin - it will wick down by capillary action. It can also be used to swab the sides of the hole, with the pin out.
@bronco6
@bronco6 Жыл бұрын
@@DavidBoycePiano i used the super thin CA only once. Someone wrote that this method is simpler, but the pins are glued around and will not miss another dose of glue, if necessary. My PIN TITE dampening method even worked on pins in a cracked pinblock when I inserted the veneer perpendicular to the crack gap. It was a frame with an exposed pinblock.

Hello Howard. I hope you still answer questions on your videos because I have a good one. My piano needs some tuning as far as loose pins go, but the coils already reached the block, just like you point out at around 11:15. It's really old, from the XIX century, and the pins go into a woodblock instead of a more modern metal one. How can I repair the looseness in that case? I hope there's something I can do on my own and I appreciate you taking the time to read and answer our questions. Cheers!

This video is using a stringing jig which is a little different from what it would be in a real piano. The pin at the far end is simulating what would be called a hitch pin. What he means is that the center hole is irrelevant. They are so thin that they simply crush between the plate hole and the tuning pin as it's driven in. They provide a very minimal amount of support to keep the pin from leaning toward the bridge, and they provide virtually zero torque to prevent rotation.

Yes, it is best to lay a vertical piano on it's back to apply the CA glue. Though I have on several occasions where I did it with the upright. You just have to do it carefully and not apply too much glue at once. I have a video demonstrating this on our KZfaq channel.

On an upright, it might be best to use an upright piano tilter to get the ca glue to seep in evenly and not run all over the place. Non-professionals shouldn't try to tilt the piano without the right equipment - and even then, get a friend to help until you're comfortable with how a piano tilter works; pianos are heavy and on little wheels and trying to tilt it without the right equipment may cause serious injury and damage the piano.

I have a few older autoharps that have loose tuning pins. I suspect, that "CA Glue" (better known as "Super Glue"), will do the same thing in tightening up the harp's pins in their wooden base. Two of my harps are older than 20 yrs old (one dated back to the 1930's (in very good condition for it's age) has a very small amount of slippage on a couple of pins, but otherwise plays well). The other harp, I picked up not long ago, that was in somewhat, poor condition (not properly taken care of). I have re-felted the key bars, and now I am replacing the old, well used, dead sounding strings. I noticed the pins had some rust deposits on them, near, and around the pin holes, and some had been turned in a bit too far than they should have been by the past owner.. I removed all the pins, and buffed them up with a wire brush, cleaning off all the rust deposits, and cleaned out the string holes. When I re-inserted the pins at their proper required heights for installing new strings, found they were now much looser, than they were before I removed them. Gripping torque, had dropped somewhat. I doubt the new strings will remain tuned properly during tuning, and would slowly creep to a lower note setting. I'll give the "CA Glue" method a try, and see if it works. If it doesn't, I may have to go for new over-sized pins, to get back my lost torque levels. Many thanks for the idea. I have plenty of Super glue on hand, so I'll give that a try. May save me money on buying over-sized pins. Thanks again.
@waynedavies3185
@waynedavies3185 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I removed all the pins, and very carefully applied Super Glue to each of the tuning holes, that the pins sit in, and allowed it to dry. I then redid them over a couple more times (allowing complete drying between coats, and made sure the glue went at least, half, to 3 quarters of the way down inside each hole. I them reinserted the tuning pin, and wa-la, the torque needed for proper tuning was back up at full strength again (around 120 lbs. torque), once the pin's were set at 15/16ths of an inch height (allowing enough room for 3 more added, extra turns inward, for tuning in the new string, that neatly wrap on the post). Couldn't have asked for it any better. Tunes up like a new autoharp, and hold it's tuning excellently. Many thanks for the info. Saved me having to buy over-sized tuning posts, and added extra work. Sounds great now. New strings, and more stable, tight tuning, makes a huge difference to this old harp. Again, many thanks.

Thanks for the useful information. My tuner replaced one loose pin on my Blüthner grand piano by hammering in a size larger. After ten days it was already out again. Are you supposed to remove the action and support the pin block from underneath when replacing the pin?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 5 жыл бұрын
It could be that there is a decent sized crack in the pinblock. If there is, putting in a larger pin may just open the crack up further which doesn't really fix the problem. You could try CA glue. This may be a method that would work with a cracked pinblock, but it depends on how bad the problem is.
@nonmartini
@nonmartini 5 жыл бұрын
@@howardpianoind Thank you for your reply. Hopefully there is no crack, as the piano is in otherwise excellent condition and all of the other tuning pins are tight. Is it possible that he created a crack by not supporting the pin block from beneath while hammering? I watched your tutorials on CA glue - sounds good, but the Blüthner has a metal plate over the pin block with holes through which the pins are placed. There looks like little space in which to insert the glue. As I understand it, it has the consistency of water and perhaps could be inserted by syringe if I can find a space . Would I have to remove the action in order to try the CA method - ie. is there a chance that the CA glue may run through and drip onto the action? I am not sure that piano tuners here would use that method, but I would be willing to try it.
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 5 жыл бұрын
It’s not very likely that a crack was created by not supporting the pinblock. The glue can get down into the pinblock even though there isn’t much room where the pin goes in through the plate. It is best to remove the action when applying the CA glue to pins in a grand piano as there is the possibility that the glue would run all the way through the block.
@nonmartini
@nonmartini 5 жыл бұрын
@@howardpianoind Thank you again and also for your interesting web site. I will try out the CA glue as soon as I can organise it. Pity I didn't see your videos earlier. Happy New Year by the way.
@EightiesTV
@EightiesTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hammering in a larger pin absolutely did not cause the crack because the crack (or void) was already there, as evidenced by a single loose pin. It's only necessary to remove the action and install a jack if you're doing *a lot* of hammering, such as restringing or replacing many pins on either a poorly-built piano, one which has suffered partial or complete detachment of the pin block, or one with delamination of a laminated (plywood) pin block. It is possible to blow the pinblock apart if it's lower-quality plywood and you are installing all the pins without compressing the underside of the pin block in a grand. This is not an issue in an upright because there is a backing block behind the pinblock. In summary, your tech didn't harm your piano. The larger pin just didn't take and if that's due to a cracked pinblock, CA glue isn't going to help. Loose is one thing, cracked is another. To prevent further damage, ensure your piano is not subject to relative humidity changes outside of 40-60%. That is the biggest killer of pinblocks.

Sometimes it could be that the pinblock (the wood that the pins go into) has become spongy and too soft with moisture or the change in temperature which means your in for a new block, which involves taking out all the strings, plate and replacing the pinblock, then putting it all back in again. I've seen people do that in fact they do that when they rebuild pianos, they usually do the soundboard and pinblock at the same time but obviously that's a big job and rarely done except on very good pianos that are worth rebuilding like vintage Steinways, Bluthners, Bechsteins and german pianos and others.

Yes, when the pins get loose from the wood fibers breaking down in the pinblock, the best solution is to replace the pinblock, but as Sam said, this isn't always practical, so some of these other methods are things can be done when replacing the pinblock isn't a practical solution.

If I'm talking about a vintage piano to my pal who's a pro concert pianist and knows alot more than me, first thing he always looks at and comments on even in online listings is the soundboard and pinblock, well not all the time but it's one of the first things to get brought up if I ask about a piano to say Piano Restorations who does rebuilds and knows probably more than anybody about rebuilding these fine instruments. I was looking at a 1905 Bluthner Style 8, great price, issue is it probably needs a new board and pinblock, not always but it's more often required to make the piano sound it's best as after a years of playing the boards get tired and start to lack power.

If you apply any oil or grease to the pins, the piano is suitable for a general overhaul - pinblock replacement. Are you giving your advice maliciously?

No shimming? :( seems like cheapest, easyist and possibly best.

By using a new tuning pin 2 sizes larger this should negate the need for any shimming. Thanks for asking the question.

How do you get the pin out?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
If you have to remove the pin you would first loosen the string, remove the string from the pin and then turn the pin out since it is threaded.
@cedriceveleigh
@cedriceveleigh 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. So when you're hammering the pin farther in, you've given up on the threads at that point?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
No, it just pushes the pin further into new pinblock material that isn’t enlarged too much.
@cedriceveleigh
@cedriceveleigh 6 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming the threading in the wood would get torn by pushing the pin farther in.
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
No, because the threads are so fine it doesn’t affect it.

Of course, NEVER drive a tuning pin into a grand piano block without removing the action and supporting the block with a jack. :)

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, this is something that I failed to mention in the video is to support the pinblock from underneath when driving the tuning pin in on a grand piano. The action needs to be removed so you can properly position the pinblock support.

If you could explain how driving a single pin that's already loose 1/8th" deeper into a loose hole, on a 70 pound chunk of 3" thick laminated wood which is screwed to a cast steel frame with 20 big screws, using hammer taps insufficient to drive a 6 penny finish nail into said wood is going to damage the piano, I'd like to hear it...

i just watched another person use super glue to fix thier pins, is that ok, im assuming its not.

Yes, the glue we show in this video which is called cyanoacrylate glue is actually the same as super glue. You just want to be sure you use the thin version. The regular super glue is too thick.

There is so much questionable information on KZfaq. Interesting for hobbyists but not for the top professionals at Steinway & Sons. At Westminster Pianos Steinway technicians have complemented us on our expertise! In the 1980's 21 technicians were employed in London; today there are just 6! Westminster Pianos

If you can afford a $65,000 piano, you can afford a $12,000 pinblock replacement and restring. And if you're not ready to have it in a rebuild shop for a month, CA glue will keep it in tune until you are.

This video is to teach the basic methods of tuning pin tightening to someone who is not a piano technician. You surely know that. You know what else is "questionable" on KZfaq? People making critical comments that are little more then a commercial for their own business.

You speak too slow, too many words and say nothing to the point! Just simplify your explanation. And the model of this glue is still unknown (missing info in the video`s explanation).
