This video helps answer the common questions about fixing mistakes. When do you unknit, tear out, or reach down. If you do rip out your work, how do you put the stitches back on. I also give a quick look at fixing a mistake in garter stitch.

OMG! Thank you! You're explanation of inserting the needle towards yourself just saved me, yet again, from frogging out my entire project. I kept coming across tutorials that have you just rip it and save the stitches, but then I couldn't knit them. They were tight and then I would frog some more. Nice thing is I can keep on using the same needle I've been using instead of finding another smaller needle. Thank you!

This video has helped me a lot. Even though I have knitted off and on for over 40 years, I still make mistakes and realize I have been doing some things wrong! I looked up the location or your shop and I was so surprised to see that you are in my hometown of Redlands, CA! I grew up there from 1960 to 1975. Graduated from RHS. I moved out of state in the 80's and relocated to UT where I met my husband and we live in North Iowa! My mother passed in January of this year and I wasn't able to get back. It has been since 1990 since I was home. I miss it,, but it isn't the same without the orange groves and the wonderful blossom smells! Thanks for posting knitting help videos

Shelby!! What a small world. I am glad you or both knitting help and a connection to home all in one spot. You will be happy to hear that there is a huge movement to save the Orange groves so while there are not nearly as many there are still tons and the air is still perfumed. If you make it out this way, come see us! Or connect with online on Wednesdays and Thursdays. You might even find old friends…

@@handsonknittingcenter1294 thanks for replying! If I ever get back your shop will be the first I visit!! I can remember Fallon asleep to the sweet smell of those blossoms as a young child and my mom put a box fan in our bedroom window which was so nice. My parents were Lucky’s Lock and Key. So many memories.

Hidy backy: The bane of my existence. I have a permanent disability which screwed up my knitting 7 years ago (lost focus). I couldn’t cast on early in my illness. I understand pattern instructions yet fail to execute them. I can no longer correct errors. I have to frog several rows of simple garter stitches. Holding the loose, live stitches before inserting the needle will make my life so much easier. Thank you for the tutorial: No intro chit-chat about your life, no digression (“That sound is my child/cat/dog”), excellent communication skills, camera closeup, light colored yarn (but not too light), and your work remained within the frame. (I do not understand why many knitters move out of the frame at critical moments - which is every moment - yet post their video.) You have a new subscriber.

First, I am so sorry to hear about the illness that impacted your knitting. Usually knitting is our therapy to get through illness! Thank you for the kind words about my videos. I own a yarn shop and the few times that a customer comes in with a question I cannot answer we go to KZfaq together and I am also frustrated by the long intros, etc. I just want to know how to do something! So I make my videos with that in mind. And while they are far from professional, I do my best. Glad they work for you and thanks for subscribing.

I'm on my first project as a beginner to knitting and I have, well, attachment issues. When one of my stitches dropped, I thought, game over man! But I decided to try out KZfaq tutorials because I was NOT about to let go of my baby. You helped me out bc I didn't know which way to put in the needle and other things. For that I owe to my life, er, ok so maybe not my _life_ but eh, I have attachment issues and I would still currently be absolutely losing it if I hadn't found you. The cowboy, or someone who needs to go potty!!! Lol lol!!! Must remember that one. Great vid. I always run a needle through every stitch of the row I want to frog back to, and then rip out what’s above it, and lo and behold, all the stitches are on the needle and ready to knit again. I learnt this recently and it saved me a ton of work. The previous thing I did, I tinked back about 60 rows and it took FOR-EVER.

Leslie, I am so sorry, I was traveling and missed your message (happy to be your knitting sister!!) OK, I pick up sts from the back to the front. But all that really matters is that the leg that faces you is in front of the leg that faces away from you. When you are ready to start again, and you are in the middle of the row, the needle with the yarn on it goes in your right hand. Does that help??

Sally - believe it or not it is the easiest fix within 2 rows of the Yo! If on purl side, just pick up the bar where the st should be and purl it. I need to shoot a video on this! Mollu
@sally0404

@@handsonknittingcenter1294 that would be great! I am knitting a baby blanket that has some rows of “one yo followed by 3 knits and pass the last knit stitch over first two and repeat”. This is followed by a row of purls and then repeated in opposite way with “3 knits and pass over followed by one yo and repeat”For some reason after knitting several rows of this alternating pattern I will find myself a few rows above having fewer stitches and it’s almost always the dropped yo. I am a beginner, so even though I can identify where the mistake was made I have a hard time figuring out how to bring the stitch up (whether to pull up purlwise or knitwise. I think this video helped me to understand the ladder more but now I have to put it into the context of my current pattern. Thank you so much for responding! ❤️

Wow Wish I would have watched this sooner. I am brand new to knitting and was 12 hours into a knitted scarf when I made a mistake in one of my rows. I had no idea how to fix it. I didnt notice the mistake right away so I decided to pull apart the scarf to get to the problem area. As I was pulling it apart I couldnt figure out how to get the stitches back on the needle the correct way. I thought I had it right but i ended up with 4 extra stitches and a horrible looking row, guess my cowboy also had to pee! So again I started to pull it all apart. Sadly the scarf no longer exist, i just had no idea how to get it back on the needles the right way. All this to fix 1 dropped stitch. So sad. This video should help me next time if I decide to try again so THANKS.

Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial. You are an excellent teacher. I have a question. I fixed a dropped stitch, & it's now on my needle. (It was in garter stitch, by the way.) Unfortunately, it looks like a knit stitch, instead of a purl stitch. Is there some way to switch it? Thanks. :)
@handsonknittingcenter1294
@handsonknittingcenter1294 6 жыл бұрын
When you fix a stitch in garter you have to remember to alternate knits and purls. When the stitch drops and you pull out the stitches you will notice that the bars poke out or hide back. The pokey outies need to be picked up as purl stitches and the hides backies are knit. To pick a stitch up as if to purl, either turn your work and pick it up knitwise, or pull the bar in front of the stitch, insert your hook from the back to the front with hook faced down and pull the bar through. I think I have a video on garter stitch fixes, but if not I will add it in the next round! Thanks for watching one of our videos! Molly

Thank you dear sweet one for this video! I tried picking up a dropped stitch on my work, and I've gotten a couple of 'messy' spots because the yarn I'm using is too thin. And I didn't know that your crochet hook had a pointed side as well...what kind of needle is it? Also, could you do a video on beginner shawls? I don't have any circular needles

Patrice, sorry for the delayed response! I missed your question. The crochet hook is a Fix It tool from Susan Bates. They are around $2.00. If you cannot find one near you, call is and we can mail one. Hands on Knitting Center 909.793.8712 What kind of shawl do you want to make? You will want to invest in circular needles for shawls - they are soooo much easier to work with!

can I fix a loose stitch by dropping down? I'm working on a 2x2 rib and I can't see very clearly which row is which so I'm not sure which way to pull to fix it. Maybe dropping down and trying vertically would help? is just one or two stitches five rows back.
@handsonknittingcenter1294
@handsonknittingcenter1294 4 жыл бұрын
Brezza, Sadly, you usually cannot fix a loose stitch buy dropping down. The exception is if the loose stitch is caused by your having "slipped" the stitch without working it. But what you can do is "spread" out the loose stitch horizontally. So, follow the line of the stitch and pull up to the right and left of that stitch. There is likely a video on You Tube about this - I have never made one but you made me just add it to my list! Molly

This is a great video, but I'm a bit confused about how it works in my project because it has one yarn over increase in each row. If I frog back several rows how do I put the increase back in?
@handsonknittingcenter1294
@handsonknittingcenter1294 4 жыл бұрын
Lesli, that is for sure not a Fixing Mistakes 101 level project! What you should do is still rip out to one row above where the mistake is. When you are ripping out the row with the yarnovers, you will see an elongated bar, that is the yarnover. Just pick it up. When you go to knit the row again, go really slowly and pay attention to where those yarnovers should live and if you passed on during the pick up, pick up the bar as you work the row. Good luck!!

Hi there is there any other way to fix a whole say, after you've almost completed your piece?? 😥

Yes. You can use a little yarn and just make a duplicate stitch over the area closing the gap. I have planned a couple of videos just for such repairs so stay tuned!

I am working on a baby blanket with 134 stitches. I messed up on my last row. Tinking seems like it would take forever to do. I’m not sure what to do except just do it!

Lisa, how bad is the mess up? Can you simply go down and change a couple of stitches or does it require ripping/tinking? If you have to tink - you will be OK! Just take it nice a slow and control those stitches. You are the boss of your knitting!

How do you pick up a purl and a back knit??
@handsonknittingcenter1294
@handsonknittingcenter1294 5 жыл бұрын
miat789 the purl Stitches are the ones that poke out at you. The bar should be in front of the stitch, enter the stitch with the crochet hook facing you. Watch the video again. It will walk you right through it. I hope that helps!

Sorry Mary Ann! When the knitting it not what I am teaching I tend to zip through it to get to the subject matter. I do have a video on beginning knitting it you are searching for that. Or, if there is something you need explained let me know. And... in case you did not know this, you can actually slow the speed of a video. I have personally found this helpful!

Sorry! It feel glacial to me. But that is the joy of being able to rewind. I have a free Zoom class this Friday on fixing mistakes if you want to be able to ask questions. www.handsonknittingcenter.com/module/class.htm?classId=374377
