A very good tutorial on replacing the governor. I see that a socket was used here to help force the governor assembly onto the end of the shaft, but a nut driver or some other hollow tube shaped tool would also work. It's probably a very bad idea to tap directly on the end of the governor assembly, so a hollow socket or similar tool will force the assembly on to the shaft without damaging the "nub" on the rear end of the governor. On some of these KitchenAid tilt head mixers, it is necessary to first disconnect the lower wires before removing the cardboard cover. Those cardboard covers in some cases form a complete ring around the back of the housing, without a gap at the bottom as shown in this example. When you try to pull off the cardboard ring the lower wires are in the way. I just worked on a KitchenAid Artisan model that had a rather unique problem with the governor. The movable bracket on the governor would not shift back and forth and would not control the speed of the machine. In this case, it turned out that the governor was not defective, but it could not move back and forth due to corrosion on the motor shaft. The movable bracket has a hole that fits closely over the motor shaft, and this keeps it centered as it slides back and forth along the shaft. The excessive corrosion on this motor shaft was enough to prevent the governor bracket from moving as it should. Using fine sandpaper to clean and smooth the motor shaft solved the problem, allowing the governor to work as designed.

My neighbor threw one of these away almost like new it's really good shape I got no power whatsoever possibly it could be the board I don't know not sure how to test it that's why I'm watching your video thank you for posting this.

So I lost hold of the spring holding the bottom of the board and can’t find it anywhere. Any tips on where it would have landed and how to get it out? Can I purchase a new one? 😮

After messing around with the mixer and replacing the phase board and then speed control plate, it finally worked again only temporarily. I took off governor to look at and re-assembled machine but forgot to put on governor and, voila, it worked again! It went to the highest speed even on setting one but it worked. What I don't understand is it (governor) looks fine, it's not electronic so what is there to 'go bad' on this part? I can purchase another part (third part now) but I'm curious how this non electronic part is the guilty party in the non functioning machine! lol

My Kitchenaid mixer is from 1970. The problem with mine is the motor stopped turning on. Could the problem be the governor in this case as well? Thank you for your help and thanks for the video!

Great video! I really thought I found what I was looking for, but your problem is actually different from mine. I don’t think the speed is necessarily wrong, it’s just that there seems to be something wrong with the actual spring in the speed control lever. It won’t stay in the ‘off’ position, and it skips the lowest speed (stir). It’s permanently stuck on setting 2, and when I pull the lever to the ‘stir’ or ‘off’ position, it just bounces back to ‘2.’ I wonder if anyone else has had this problem?

Same thing happened to mine. The weights flew off into the armature. I managed to get them out and have bought s new governor but now it's not turning on. Is there a certain amount you need to push it on?

My artisan isn't turning off :( I have to unplug it to make it stop. if it's plugged in it only works on low speed - doesn't matter which speed level I'm on. Do you have any advice what I might need to change to make it work again??

I'm wondering if youd be able to troubleshoot an issue I'm having with kitchenaide mixer. The panel keeps hitting the sides of the bowl and even chipped my last panel. I replaced the panel but it keeps hitting the bowl aggressively. It does not matter what speed it's on. It was passed down to me when my grandma passed away earlier this year. I dont want to throw it away :( #Help! Lol
