Fixing SRAM Grip Shift Shifter That Won't Click/Stay In Gear

I show how to repair a SRAM Grip Shift shifter that does not click, won't catch, and won't stay in gear. When you twist the shifter, the derailleur shifters, but when you release the shifter, it slips right back to the smallest cog, or chain ring. The problem is generally the indexing spring inside the shifter.

@Presto Rodrigues Shrug. There are different kinds of cranks, for different kinds of bottom brackets. There is no such thing as a "normal" mtb. Never even heard of a HERCULES ULTIMA DX. You are just going to have to figure out what you have, and what you need, and go from there.

@Presto Rodrigues Just realized you double posted this same thing on two different videos. That's a no.

If there any easy possible way to switch/convert a 3 speed hub from a standard right side chain/sprocket drive to the left side for a motorized bike build? Many people try to use jackshaft kits so they have a few extra gears but it's more trouble than it's worth.

@@RJTheBikeGuy My question is.....Do they make a left hand drive 3 speed hub/wheel ? If no, could a 3 speed hub be modified and converted into a left side drive 3 speed hub/wheel?

Hey RJ! I don't have these shifters or anything, but was just sitting in my workshop which is now full of all manner of obscure tools after so many years of getting deeper and deeper into the mechanic life, and thought about how much of my knowledge can be traced back to you specifically. So I decided to drop in and say thanks. Interesting how a stranger far away can change your life so much without ever even meeting you. Your videos were the catalyst that took me from just riding bikes to truly understanding them-- now I take any chance I get to pass on what I have learned from you to the cyclists in my own life. Of all the slickly produced high budget videos out there, nobody breaks down every little step so clearly the same way you do. Thanks again for all the work you do with this channel, you are right up there with Sheldon Brown in the hall of fame of legendary mechanics. Respect!!

RJ, First let me say that I've never been a very mechanically inclined person. But over the past year I rebuilt two old 80's road bikes, a Trek and a Schwinn. I found the process for both bikes to be relatively painless and enjoyable. The reason of course is because of your excellent videos. I found them to be super helpful and very informative. Thank you! Austin

I find RJ’s video much better than Park Tool’s. Park Tool’s are professional quality I get it but their videos are too long. RJ’s videos are to the point and just long enough. Anyone else?
@jaman5735
@jaman5735 3 жыл бұрын
i like both, parktool vids are more modern and up to date. rj is more regular joe, find away, diy, practical guy. iam an army vet 1982-1986, who lives in germany. after a burnout in 2014, i went to fulltime school for 2 years to become a certified bicycle mechanic. i was disappointed to learn that 99% of the time, parts aren't repaired, they get replaced with new parts. iam more old school, so rj is more perfered.

Grip shifters are my favorite type because I ride year round and other types of shifters are harder to use while wearing big, bulky gloves or mittens. Even though they are inexpensive to replace, I still like to maintain them and get as much use out of them as possible.

SRAM you can at least work on and they can feel good shifting. Shimano Revoshi(f)t on the other hand are a complete abomination and should be replaced if you find them on your bike ASAP.

I recently saw your video on removing freewheels and I saw what you look like. You Sir sound a lot younger than you look. However the real genius is in your knowledge of cycles. I am in India and we are a country where cycles are used a lot. However nobody here is dedicated to repair work like you are. Your videos are amazing. Super helpful in the pandemic when we don't have access to cycle shops.

Just bought my 7 year old a bike off Facebook, realized when I got home, the shifters (front and back) did this (11 speed, also didn't realize this until I got home). Watched your video and within 1 minutes, both were working like new(ish). Thank you so much for these videos.

Great videos! I could watch them all day. I've messed with Grip Shifts a lot. I find it's best to remove them with the shifter in low gear (or even a tiny bit beyond) and replace them with high gear lined up. There is a thing inside your model of Grip Shift that Sram calls the "diving board." It helps me to remember that you put the long end of the spring "under" the "diving board." Keep up the great work!

Hey Thanks for this, it totally solved my problem. A note to make it even easier: you don't need to take the handlebar grip all the way off. Mine slid about half way fairly easily (no lubrication necessary)... then I had enough space to pop off the cover, find the spring, get it out w/ tweezers and get it back in place. The tweezers were the only tool I used.

Well, this is a lifesaver! I just did some adjustments on my sister-in-laws bike and a grip shifter stopped clicking and holding position. I'm hoping that it's a case of the spring mysteriously popping out of place rather than breaking.
