My local motor trimmer tells me that one way to make your new headlining last is to make sure the ends are rolled over the lip of the board, front and back. Both Ford and Holden do theirs cheaply by just cutting it off at both ends. The heat and sun from your windscreen then make the foam deteriorate early. That's why, when the sag begins, it's often from near the windscreen. Manufacturers who are more mindful of this will both roll the lining over the front and back lips, as well as install a trim piece to lock it in place and protect the foam. Commodores had it done on the back, but not the front.

Yup it's a good idea. Mine were rolled over slightly at the ends, and I also put staples around the perimeter just in case.

Here's a shortcut upholsters look at me funny for doing all the time; those falcon and commodore hoodlining boards are made of fibreglass and they can get wet, so I just hose the old foam off them and wait for them to dry haha so much easier. I'd done so many for a VT/VX/VYI that I got a spare hoodlining board from the wreckers as an exchange board so I always had a hosed and dry one ready to go if I'm in a hurry that day. Otherwise, if the board is cardboard and can't be wet, or I don't have time to let it dry and I have to go old school, the sweeping it through the interior light hole into the wheelie bin trick is exactly what I do haha, although you should use a stiff plastic bristled brush, so much easier. Good job for a first time though, falcon ones are much harder to stick down because they're so dishy compared to a commodore, but you got very few crinkles in the fabric by the look of it. Also the front and back against the windscreens, you should roll the fabric around and double glue it so it doesnt start lifting because there's nothing there to hold the fabric down once it's all back together

My very first thought as he started the video was "Water-blaster". Then looked closely to confirm it was either fiberglass or plastic.

Folding over is obvious, but Ford did not think to do that for my Territory. The interim solution was using a staple gun around the perimeter; the only place it has come apart so far. My TH Magna ended with grey-painted drawing pins in a pleasing diamond arrangement.

You did a great job from what I saw. My au needs this done badly. I got a quote from a motor trimmer a few years ago and he wanted $300. I'm glad you put the comment at the end about it essentially being a tedious job and not particularly enjoyable. As with anything to do with DIY to cars, if it's your only car, you're under the pump to get it finished and that takes away a lot of the enjoyment, especially if you've never done it before. Like everything, you can't beat the bloke that does it for a living, you can only give it your best shot. Good stuff.

You at least tackled this unpleasant job head on and got a perfectly good result for that car. I was fortunate enough to find a good one at a self serve wrecker for my NC and managed to wrestle it through the front doors of the two cars. I used my little Laser to bring it home as the LPG tank in the Fairlane precluded use of the 60/40 split fold rear seat. The edges were abit frayed by the time I had forced it in three cars but the trim hides all that and it looks beautiful 3 years later.

As always your presentation is crisp and on point, well done again. Back in the 70's we used to replace a perfectly good headliner covering for fun after a custom paint job, and usually with a color that would now make one gag, usually some wannabe 60's theme......i am astonished at your first attempt and success. i would add...use a spray (Alcolin) or other acid free adhesive, definitely use a paint roller to apply the new material and rather remove and replace via the tailgate if you can (drop the rear seating) By the way i am the proud owner of a '99 Fairmont, you might want to do a presentation on replacing the rear door locking servo's, mine packed up and i believe it is a fairly common issue.

As soon as you said you're going to use Quick Grip I said NOO the glue is crap, don't use 3M either. I never let it dry for a week tho, a few days maybe. At first, it sticks but after about 2 or 3 months it fails. I hope you were more successful than me. I have not done the headliner yet only door trims and I now use High-Temperature Contact Adhesive HTA1000 but it needs to be used outside or in a well-ventalated area. From my failed attempts with door trims even with HTA1000 I have not attempted to do a headliner yet but I am going to try one soon on a wagon and I needed to see this so thanks heaps for making this clip.

So far so good, going on 6 - 7 months now and it hasn't changed. It would have been 100% humidity on the day (raining heavily, and had been for the few days prior) plus it was pretty cold and I was filming in an open garage, so I can't blame the glue entirely. It stuck very well in the end and has tolerated some very extreme temperatures so far.

One thing I'd point out is you can be pretty brutal with the headliner itself, it's a fibre composite and it's incredibly flexible - keeping that in mind will make removal and installation a bit easier. If you do spit it, it'll be near the edges and probably only tiny - just use a bit of fabric tape to repair and it'll be sweet.

I have done this with 2 x AU wagons, which is a lot of real estate to deal with. I tried to get replacements from wreckers, but all the head liners have the same issue, due to the foam backing crystallising (maybe time to stop using foam backed headliner car manufacturers). The main issue is that although you may be able to get most of the old foam off the shell, the old contact adhesive remains, and contact adhesive hates sticking to old contact adhesive. 3M 74 is a foam adhesive spray that is pretty good, but whatever you use, unless you get a solvent and remove the old glue, the bond won't be great. Gap in the market for non foam backed headliner !!!!

If the manufacturers would go back to serviceability rather than redundancy we'd be much happier. Older vehicles had headlining that lasted the life of the car and the paint only ever needed a light cut and polish. Current crop with clear over paint and foam backed everything deteriorate so quickly even when babied. Good video but the glue is the thing, need to get the speciality spray glue not general glue.

True, the foam really doesn't stand up well to the heat long term. There's also the question as to why a headliner needs padding anyway - noise and heat insulation I suppose. The glue has held up well so far over a year later.

To remove old foam use a soft brush first and than a little more aggressive one for those tricky bits.

Aaaah the goold olde saggy headliner. A classic 'feature' of many older Falcons and Commodores. The headliner in my BF Fairmont is on it's way out. It's only at the edges, so not serious enough for replacement yet.

Top job. Maybe the non water based Quick Grip would have been better. Never done a headliner but have done several underbonnet insulation’s. It was suggested to me that even though the replacement bonnet liners are self adhesive, don’t trust them. Put Quick Grip Gel on the bonnet and the liner. Always used the normal one, quite smelly, but it sticks. You were lucky to get it out the door, with some the only way is removing front or rear window. Loved Griegs Peer Gynt suite (my spelling).

I actually found a recommendation from Selleys directly that this product was ideal for vehicle headliners, so I decided to go with it. I was worried some of the non water-based glues might dissolve the foam.
@sourwords1808
@sourwords1808 4 жыл бұрын
Water based was the problem here. Definitly need a chemical bonding for a good adhesion.

Perhaps, I didn't want to risk a higher power glue that might react with or dissolve the foam

A wire brush makes short work of that foam. I typically use a brass brush as the bristles are not too stiff, not too soft.

Eco or water-based contact glues are usually shit, for anything. Sometimes you have to do two coats if a surface is porous, the first coat is basically a sealer.

Did my headliner during the weekend. The glue is super sticky, its so sticky the only challenge is that if you make a mistake its going to be hard to fix! I did make a few mistakes. But overall the roof looks million times better than what it was before.

No idea who would distribute it in AU, but there are spray glues made for headliners. 3M and permatex are a few examples here in the US. Going to tackle the headliner in my G8 (really a VE commodore) this week, pulling all the trim and getting it out is the worst part.
