Fixing the Window Motor on an 1989 Lincoln Town Car / Mercury Grand Marquis / Ford Crown Victoria

"Panther" platform cars - the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car - often have rear window motors that burn out. In this video, I go step-by-step through what you need to do to change and replace the window winder motor in an 1989 Lincoln Town Car. This should work for any Panther platform car from 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 to 1989. Please comment and subscribe!

Just got an 87 Grand Marquis yesterday with 85k original miles. One of the few problems with it was the rear motors are bad, this helped a lot!

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make this and making it so concise. You’ve really helped the car repair community! Besides using a nut driver instead of a screwdriver to start the window motor bolts, I highly recommend replacing the water shield to prevent the door panel from getting wet or moldy. I usually make new ones from thick plastic sheeting (drop cloth or trash bag). I use the old one as a template, cut it with scissors and use two sided tape or a waterproof caulk is the adhesive.

If you use a step drill you can make it a lot easier on yourself. I did this job the other day and I opened up the holes with the step drill. And it was so much easier to see and place the bolts.

Awesome video! Very informative. Helped me replace the rear window regulators in my '89 Mercury Grand Marquis. While I had the door open I sprayed the bottom of the door with anti-rust coating and I also lubricated all the window mechanism and tracks with silicone. They are smooth as silk now!

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent video. After watching it I performed the operation on my 1988 Town Car with perfect results and my mechanic skills are more than lacking. One thing I found helpful was to use a nut driver instead of a ratchet wrench to remove and re-install the motor bolts through the holes I drilled. Thanks again.

Sweet video Roland!! I was able to take the interior door panel off my 1986 Town Car, locate the window motor, tap it with a hammer a couple times and it started working again. good thing too cause it looks like rain . thanks for the help!

@@RolandHulme yep but I ended up selling soon after I bought it and fixed those cuz the engine started knocking at idle and I was like HELL TO THE F NO!! I was not bout to deal with that annoying shit. I love them too but the engines are not only turds but frikken suck they always have problems even if you try to maintain them

This video is super informative! very well done. i will replace both of my rear motors in the next couple days. Ill let you know how I do. and my next project will be the air conditioning! Im not sure yet how much of it I will replace. Im thinking about having firestone diagnose for me. I do know that I currently have old refrigerant system, just retro-fitted... and i do need to replace blower motor resistor... you are so helpful with this beautiful car; I wish you had more videos on it to help me out! I just replaced the "gear plugs" in the passenger side last week. I noticed someone mentioned how to get the Door lock rod loose on the front doors. Take off the chrome trim piece, then the woodgrain trim piece. Look up in there and you'll see the rod goes into the bottom of the sliding lock button, take a screw driver and pry it out. It's held in there by a small spring clip, I put a dab of grease on mine when I was putting it back into place. Anyone feel free to ask me any questions, my car is a 1990 Crown Vic.

Yes, what Lerai said - the regulator is the bit that controls the window going up and down, the motor is the bit that actually powers that movement. I only replaced the motor. Replacing the regulator is a bit tougher as it's riveted into the door frame.

Good video, i have a 86 ltc the back Windows aren't working very well , one thing i might mention is putting some lithium grease on the gear track and slider tracks it will slide alot more better

I have an 87 Town Signature. Over time the front two windows work slower and slower I have to push the up down button a few times to help it gain some momentum and the motor groans and tries. Finally my front drivers has quit its stuck in the up position. I can hear the motor groaning and trying though. The front passenger has gotten to where it moves very very slow and I think its ready to go now also. I never heard the tell tale sounds of the regulator going out like snapping or crunching. So, when the problem exists like mine for a while and leads up to finally getting stuck but you hear the motor trying and groaning what would be the fix? Motor, regulator, gears?

Great and informative video, makes almost feel as if I could do this myself. My problem is the front driver's window in my 1988 Lincoln Town Car. Worked fine this morning, then didn't work at all this afternoon. No warning, no indication of a problem at all. Can't afford to have it done, so, would it be possible to fix it as easily as the back one? Thanks. M.

Yes, although the screws are in a slightly different configuration. I changed the motors in the front doors of this very car, and if a dumbo like me can figure it out, you should have no problem!

Weird how they put dimples in the metal door panel to show you where to drill. Why nut just do the holes??? Well, that was a long time ago. I've since donated the car to a youth camp. But I know it's still on the road today. Good luck!

Ugh, I had a car with that, once. If you can, it's possible to 'jig' the glass back on track, but you might need to pull the entire assembly out to fix it.

That might be the regulator - cog system that actually turns the thing that winds the window down and up. This happened to me one time and I realized I'd installed the window motor the wrong way around. They're different for the right and left versions.

obtain gear kit for end of motor . NAPA part number 49 - 22277 . Nylon gear with metal insert . Grease included in kit . Move existing gear back and forth on motor end . IF it moves a lot , replace gear kit . CLEAN OUT HOUSING WELL before installing new gear set . Coat shaft for gear and put grease in end of gear set . Re-install after replacing gear kit . Grease all window tracks . Takes pressure off motor . Window should move up and down smoothly . IF it doesn't , window tracks or center of track work might be severely rusted . Use PB Blaster to free up moving metal track work . SHOULD solve problem !

I've had similar problems with the 7 Town Cars I have had . I just changed out gear sets for my '89 Town Car . Remove motor from door and try to move metal gear back and forth . IF it moves with a lot of travel , open the gear cover door , ( usually one small screw holds cover on until you replace three screws ) . CLEAN OUT GEARBOX COMPLETELY AND CAREFULLY ! Remove broken plastic parts and old grease . I installed NAPA part number 49 - 22277 on each motor gear housing . The kit includes new grease . MAKE SURE all areas of gear are covered with grease , especially center hole . Any remaining grease , just pack gear area full before replacing cover . Re-install motor and test BEFORE resealing door holes . Unit should drive window up and down smoothly .
