Man this coolant issues with E90 are devastating. I was replacing my oilfilter gasket, needed to remove the mikey mouse socket to uncrew the bottom bolt. The socket just broke in 10 pieces. I replaced the mickey mouse socket, than the plastic hose connector(A) from the cooler to the radiator leaked, replaced that one to. After that the O-ring of the hose attached underneath hose A leaked, replaced that one. After a few days low coolant level warning came on, searched for leaks and found out the radiator top attachment was cracked, replaced the radiator and the O-ring of the in and outlet hose. And now finnaly after 2 months of headache i finnaly fixed it. Such a good car but the pastioc parts are terrible.

I'm surprised this channel doesn't have more views/subs. High quality BMW videos compared to some of the more popular ones out there haha. All this stuff reminds me of my old 335i and I laughed at some of the aluminum upgrades and hoses in your unboxing video, since all that crap broke on me. I'm gonna buy a 335xi next year and will be doing all the preventative maintenance I learned from my old one right away. Keep it up and continue growing!

I love watching these BMW overhaul videos, but have no skills. I’d buy the car, all the parts, and fly up to help do the work and learn. Sound like a cool video series? Sounds like a good vacation to me. I’ve got my eye on an older v-8 X5, hit me up and let’s do this!

QUESTION PLEASE. (Model: 2008 E90 N54 Dual Turbo Sedan) I just ordered a new hose that attaches to the Mickey Mouse part that you mention in your video. (My hose has a leak down low in the engine bay). What does the other end of that hose attach to? I cannot see where it terminates on the other end down low in the engine bay, even with the mud shield removed very hard to see. I wanted to plan this out before I actually do the work. Thanks very much and great videos you have. Phil

N54 weak spot, well probably everything except the engine block. I own a 2006 E92 335i coupe. I love it and also hate it. Always something to fix. Good video. I already replaced my top hose fitting to aluminium. I busted the bottom plastic Heater piping to water pump and header tank. Ready to pull half the front of the engine bay out to replace the part I got today. The joys.
@helplmchoking8 ай бұрын
Lol mine is exactly the same. Engine itself is as reliable as anything, absolutely bullet proof. Everything bolted to the engine? One disaster after another 😂 did this same replacement after my top fitting disintegrated and pumped coolant all over the road. Now if I can fix the mysterious squeaking noise I'll be 2 VANOS solenoids and 2 O2 sensors away from perfect shape... For now

Yes, list of things replaced as long as my arm. I just got a new transmission cooler, it is weeping coolant slightly. Just waiting on a plastic clip removal toolset to separate the trans oil lines. If your replacing the long lower hose from bottom of the coolant tank, to water pump, to trans cooler, to heating. With my new hose I bent open the factory press fitted clamps, carefully with a screwdriver to use my old section from the waterpump to header tank side. I used a hose clamp from the rubber to hard plastic part of the hose to re join (sits under the radiator on the crossmember) . The new aftermarket hose would not clip on to the waterpump, slightly different angle for connector clip and O ring to click on. Be aware of this. Easy mod and the new hose was only $80 posted@@helplmchoking

You didn't seem to measure and mix coolant 50/50 with water. Lubricant in the coolant is needed for the water pump to be properly lubed when operating. Gutsy move Maverick using that pressure washer!

Is it okay to run semi-cracked oil filter housing to thermostat hose? is there any way to prolong the life of those type of hoses without outright replacing them
@TheBimmerBarn2 жыл бұрын
If it's already semi-cracked, I wouldn't rely on it any longer! Only solution is replacement, but the machined aluminum fitting will never have that problem again!

Do you have to remove the fan and oil lines or was that just purely to get a decent camera shot?
@TheBimmerBarn Жыл бұрын
Oil lined was for the shot, but you could probably leave the fan in there if you have small hands!

I've seen people bleed the coolant with the cap open but I've heard BMW directs you to keep the cap on when running the bleed procedure. Idk though I think either is fine. I've always bled mine while closed.
@TheBimmerBarn2 жыл бұрын
I like watching the water go "spew spew" when its bleeding the air out 😁
@JackRR152 жыл бұрын
Yes technically that is correct and how i do it. BMW TIS workshop manual says to have it closed.
@helplmchoking8 ай бұрын
It's cap and bleed screw closed when doing the bleed cycle, bleed valve open when filling the coolant (not topping off)

just a cost us5.00 dollars part but it will cause tow services once broken in driving
@samyb28343 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Chris, I just had this happened to me. The engine overheated for like 2 miles and then I had the car towed. I got a "red" thermostat alert. The car went on limp mode, then it did shut down. The oil temperature was around like 270 when I stopped the car. I restarted the car no problem (was running rough) and I still had the coolant alert when I had to drive on the tow truck. Do you think my engine is screwed?
@TheBimmerBarn3 жыл бұрын
It happens, and once the water has spilled out, there's no way of cooling down the motor which is why it was still in limp mode for a while. I'd service the cooling system, maybe do the water pump and thermostat while you're at it, and you'll be back in business. These motors are resilient enough. Good luck!
@samyb28343 жыл бұрын
@@TheBimmerBarn Hey Chris, I just did it. Actually, I changed the thermostat and the water pump a month ago. I went to Oreily and they had the metal flange. I did not remove the oil line or the fan. I went straight ghetto South Florida style. It was reallll pain in the ass dude. But the car is running fine now.

You can change the hose, but it comes with a plastic fitting which will break in the future. Best option is new hose with a new aluminum adapter at the same time! Thanks for watching :)

Not good to use just water as coolant as previously stated and is Walmart oil BMW approved? A n54 is fussy engine and needs decent oil 5w40 approved is a good start. From a BMW tech.
@TheBimmerBarn2 жыл бұрын
I agree! The walmart oil was just to top off before we did the oil pan and filled the car with BMW LL-01 approved oil, which is the best grade by BMW standards! And BMW coolant is the way to go! Thanks for watching :)
@JackRR152 жыл бұрын
Honestly the LL01 isn't really a requirement if you are not doing the long oil intervals. I still do LL01 oil since I can find some cheap here. Also 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 and 5w-40 are all approved oils weights for the N54.

Your killing your alternator by spraying degreaser on it, that stuff kills alternator coatings and causes shorts within the alternator. Next time cover the alternator before using degreaser, if you want to clean the alternator use low quality gas.

BMW + plastic engine parts = engineered obsolescence (pony up tons of money for parts or a new car).
