Bronte is a great villian for Dutch because he is an outlaw of the past coming face to face with an outlaw of the future. Bronte and his organization are proof that even the criminal underworld is leaving them behind.

Also note Bronte has much more power and influence by simply using the threat of force to encourage corruption that benefits him, whereas Dutch is focused almost entirely on dangerous, high profile, old-timey Wild West heists that clearly attract public [newspapers, rumors] and government attention. Dutch's Boys in general are too busy LARPing as if it's the 1860s and reminiscing about the old days to actually adapt their strategy for modern times.

That was my take on it aswell when I first met Bronte. The duality of it all was pretty striking and I loved it. Angelo to me represents one of the early figures of the Italian American Mafia. The beginning of a new type of criminal enterprise that does not shun civilization and live outside of it but actively embraces it. Something Dutch vehemently detests.

It's pretty crazy how quickly Dutch starts losing his mind after meeting Bronte.

Red Dead gets a lot of praise but no one ever talks about the set work and shot composition, the way John, Dutch, and Arthur are reduced sitting all little on that couch across from Brontë when they first meet is a hilarious bit of physical comedy begat from the framing. It also highlights Arthur and John’s bewilderment. They’ve been taken off guard, and Brontë is reclined and relaxed - in emotional control of the situation, manipulating Dutch with ease. Video games have a tendency to turn off the part of my brain that appreciates cinematography because most of the game is a static third person view but if I manually pay attention it’s very rewarding and it’s certainly work that the developers deserve praise for

I remember the introduction to Saint Denis. The pure filth you felt seeing all the factories active, working all the poor people to death. I hated the very sight of it and you could feel Dutch and Arthur feeling the same. I think Rockstar truly perfected the "Wild west" and the civil world in one map. The way the people are so different compared to Tumbleweed or other livestock towns really makes you ponder if humanity ever really changed for the best.

Modern urban civilization definitely has brought many good things to our species, but it’s undeniably left some irreparable harm to us as well. Lately I’ve been feeling like we aren’t meant for the city living life. When you compare the crime rates, drug abuse rates, and mental health problems between urban and rural living, rural living has a clear advantage. I was raised in a medium sized city in the North East US (250k population) but recently I moved across the country to a much smaller city in the Deep South and now live in a much more spread out area, and I feel a lot better. Less smothered by urban life. It was good for me

Dutch definitely gets more and more careless the further the story develops. By the time they reach St. Denis he's not thinking straight at all, he's like a dog chasing a bone (meaning money). It was painfully obvious that Bronte would never just try to help them by revealing where "easy money" is, and even Arthur and John say that it's not a good idea. But Dutch being Dutch just disregards everything they say as them having NO GODDAMN FAITH.

Saint Denis really feels like a bad city even to this day. Saint Denis has a physical taste, smell, and feel that you can feel through the screen. The sounds are garbled through the cranking of industrial gears, the cries of pain, the corruption. While Saint Denis seems at first glance like a world wonder in an old society, the truth is that for the average person, the pay off isn't worth anything. You lose everything in Saint Denis if you're not the exploiter of the people. Rockstar Games did an AMAZING job with making Saint Denis a supposed paradise, but a smog storm in person.

What i find interesting through all of this is how many people see right through Dutch and his rhetoric except for the people in the gang. The Grays and Baithewaits manipulated him into attacking their rivals, Bronte, who was too powerful to care about Dutch's posturing, saw Dutch as a kindred spirit, but not in a positive way. That imo is the significance of the Dutch killing Bronte scene. Bronte figured Dutch was doing what Bronte did and bought the loyalty of his men, keeping them in line with money. And when his offer to pay the gang more than double what he thought dutch does was met with stone silence, he realized Dutch was far more dangerous than he could have anticipated, because he kept his tools in line with faith and you can't buy that out. Fantastic story telling bits

While playing this game , I became torn on whether to think Dutch was actually a storm for good. Yes, he put his gang in danger, but most of the time, they are getting rid of worse men.

Great video! I feel like a video dedicated to the Van Horn Trading Post would be interesting because of how completely lawless the town is, and also how unnecessarily aggressive it’s residents are. I wonder how it came to be that way.

I never really picked up on it specifically while playing but it’s very interesting how nearly every villain of RDR2 is a personification of one of Dutch’s masks without the other to hide behind. Colm is his straight up outlaw mask robbing and killing for the fun of it without the fancy self assured idealist mask to cover it. Brontë is his idealist mask who speaks like he’s smarter than he is and thinks he’s bullet proof even with a gun in his face, and Cornwall is Dutch’s ideal life, he’s a rich man with so many avenues of money he can just sit around and muse on random things

7:05: The reason that Bronte has so many armed guards (and why he's specifically noted as being 'Italian') is because of the real-life history of Late 19th - Early 20th Century New Orleans (which Saint Denis is based off of; Lemoyne being a thinly veiled parallel to Louisiana, my home state). More specifically, it's based on the criminal history of New Orleans, which at the time was mostly ruled over by La Cosa Nostra, or "the Black Hand" in English, which was a kind of precursor to the modern-day Mafia and the Crime Families. They got their name from their calling card which they would put on a piece of paper they mailed to the target of their attentions or would paint onto the sides of buildings they were going to target... a black handprint, meaning that they were 'Marked for Death/ Harassment.' They often used brutal scare tactics of burning down properties belonging to folks that wouldn't pay their 'Protection' Fee, of mutilating and disfiguring those that had either publicly or unintentionally stood in their way leaving them in a state of agony but not letting them die before showing others what they were willing to do to anybody that opposed them, kidnapping and ransoming children or wives to extort money from desperate family members who didn't want to see their loved ones hurt, and other cruel, exploitative acts to assert dominance over the average citizen and to intimidate those law-enforcement officers who wouldn't play ball and become dirty cops in their employ, by showing them how far they were willing to go. In fact, there's some suspicion that the actual serial killer involved in the mysterious 'Axman Murders' of the early 1910s was actually a La Cosa Nostra hitmen sent to assassinate people for either refusing to work with or pay expected fees to the organization. The main crux of the arguments was that one of the main suspects at the time was a known associate of la Cosa Nostra, as well as most of the victims being either Americans of Italian descent or Italian immigrants.

I wish we got more missions in Saint Denis like more robberies or making events of some sort go wrong for Bronté or see the gang explore the city and get get used to high society, maybe a companion when doing Henri Lemieux dirty work?? More characters to work with? Rival businesses? Targets for the Van der linde gang, like someone who knows who they are and threaten to send Milton, so they silence them. Idk R* should’ve expanded the potential of somewhere as huge like Saint Denis,

@@olivergould3878 If Guarma was exploration like it was supposed too it would have been more enjoyable. But chapter 5 was too short. I mean we could had stayed at Lakay a bit longer. The Guarma missions were very easy missions and it doesn't take long to be back but then again I wanted to explore a full island to bad we didn't have that.

@@Kvs-vf9nt I know what you mean you try to explore but you get shot down by Fusar's goons if I remember right it's possible but not possible cos you get gunned down if you try. But nah I don't like it because it's only purpose is to show how crazy Dutch is and I feel like Fursar wasn't a main Villain I think Bronte should of had a longer storyline I say he was more annoying then a character I could hate!

Great mini-doc. I gotta go back and play RDR2 again. I have been inspired now. Its such a good game. So immersive, I forget I am playing a game. Its so immersive and believable, like taking part in the lives and times of the gang. RDR2 is next-level stuff that any other open world game can not be compared to. Even GTA5 does not have the writing immersive quality that RDR2 has. It never feels like a list of chores or redundant gameplay. The 'grind' is blended with the world and the story so well. Its the best Western movie ever made, and we all get to be the lead role.
