This is incorrect, the flamethrower was used during WW2 to clear bunkers and entrenched positions where the flames would burn off the oxygen within the confined space suffocating the entrenched combatants while the actual fire didnt do much

As someone who has been in an unfortunate sticky encounter with fuel and fire: -a fuel fire is big, loud and scary -you will feel the impact of the "fireball" on your body -ignited fuel will go through (most of) your clothes -you have 2-3 seconds before you will feel the pain -the pain is unbearable, it's like being bitten, or being stung by several wasps. It won't subdue. It will last for several hours -the smell will be revolting. Most of this smell will come from your skin. -fire goes up & needs air: drop and roll -DROP AND ROLL Also: -if someone is on fire, is rolling on the ground and the fire is not going out, cover the fire with a large cloth (a thick wet blanket would be perfect). Do not "wave and slap" the cloth, it will make things worse. -DO NOT REMOVE THE CLOTHES FROM THE PERSON, even if the fire is out. DO NOT DO THAT. -When the fire is out, put fresh and clean water on the burned part (except the face if the person is unconscious). If the person is clothed, pour the water over the clothes. DO NOT REMOVE THE CLOTHES. -at this point, you have to call an ambulance or bring the person to the hospital Recovery from a burning will be LONG and PAINFUL. You will have large nasty scars, forever. People will stare at you. You will also have a story to tell, if you're lucky enough.

I watched an interview years ago of a flamethrower operator on Iwo and Okinawa. Most of the enemy soldiers that died from flame throwers died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the caves and tunnels. Supposedly it’s very quick as well.

You are correct, there's none of that running around screaming like you see in movies. The sheer amount of fire literally sucks the air out of your lungs and you drop dead in less than a second, there's actually a video from a few years ago of some dirty hippy trying to jump over a moderately large bonfire at a music festival and he ends up belly flopping into it and dying instantly.
