It is curious that the Soviet airplanes used to fight at low altitudes, where they had the best perfomance, sometimes even better than the Germans, especially during the 1943-1945 period, and now Flanker also performs at low altitudes@@rippp4631

why? @@rippp4631

@andreikokot8927 it's a half joke but the flanker thrives at low speeds & altitudes. Mostly because of its maneuverability and it never really loses datalink connection in DCS at low altitudes. It can hold its own in BVR especially with the pl-12, but NATO systems are better designed for BVR in my opinion.

@@rippp4631 i wish dcs would create some sort of battlefield manager or HQ or whatever, where you have AI or humans, making missions with limited planes aka what your side can build, or send etc and taking economic factor into calculation, so you can end up with more migs, like mig23, vs f4s, f5, f15, and can play around with Air defense zone traps and low flying high flying baiting.. you can end up defeating much more qualitative side by using cheaper means and simple tactics due to low maintenance and running cost of the machines. i just calculated some stuff considering flying hour vs. maintenance hour, always after 1 flying hour maintenance hours follows, for western airplanes this figure is considerably higher, ergo, mission sortie tempo would fall drasticaly for western planes after 3 weeks or 2 months while USSR could keep up air presence at high level still. i read for 1 hour f22 has to get 40 hours maintenance.. so for a fleet of 96 f22, you get to cover 4 zones (x8 to cover whole day 24 hours) and this would be very narrow, if something breaks you are sending lone f22 to cover whole air zones, this is just simplifying but numbers don't lie, having long maintenance needed reduces availability thus making your fleet needs be bigger, so 100 planes vs. 100 planes is not the equation, neither is technology (unless 2 generations apart), but availability for high tempo sorties..
