In this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch talks about how you can respond if you are assailed by unwanted and intrusive thoughts of self-harm. He offers three coping strategies: 1) mindfulness meditation--just observing the thoughts without pushing them away; 2) thought substitution--say Cancel! Cancel! and substitute a positive thought; and 3) using the power of distraction. You can learn about them in detail by watching the video.

Thank you for this video, Douglas. I actually ordered 2 copies of a book you recommended on OCD (Brain Lock) from another video. One for myself and another friend that has OCD.

Very good advice, but my thoughts are dark all the time, and have been since I was very young. Even as an adult I still punish myself as I hate myself, have no support and no amount of therapy has helped. And as bad as it is, sometimes the only way to get the intense emotional pain out that you cannot express, is to punish yourself, to turn it into physical pain.

Sorry to hear about your struggles. Have you ever tried seeing a therapist or counselor to get some support in letting go of those dark thoughts?

@@DouglasBloch yes like I said I’ve seen plenty of them, my latest was for EMDR but the therapist wasn’t comfortable doing EMDR on me for my years of trauma due to my heart arrhythmia.

Hi Douglas, what do you think about Michael Singer ("The untethered soul" author) approach to living and mindfulness. I think is interesting, it would be cool watching videos of you commenting about authors.

Someone ending their life through a process where they go through treatment first should be seen as acceptable
@DouglasBloch
@DouglasBloch Жыл бұрын
If a person seeks all possible treatments and perseveres, their symptoms should clear up at some point. It is a matter of holding on.
@onlinetruth9979

@@DouglasBloch so then do you agree that there should be a system where they can have assisted dying as an option if they go through those treatments first? Many people have ended their lives in brutal and secretive ways because they were not incentivized to go through treatment in the first place. Allowing the right to die after all treatment would incentivize these people towards treatment.

I don’t know what is true & what is right. I just want to stop my pain so badly. I get messages from all around me, take my meds, take my medication. It helps you or it’s causing your suicidal thoughts.

I would find a good therapist or counselor that I trusted and then discuss this with them. They can serve as a guide. You might also want to talk with a psychiatrist or a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner because they are experts in medications.

I would reach out to a therapist and talk about that with him or her. Appears that you might benefit from some counseling.

Thanks, I had a great day at work. I felt happy. Then I experimented with trying to think of something negative eg suicidal thoughts & melancholy. I couldn’t come up with anything. I had a good day finally. So I’m gonna start affirming that I’m grateful for my experience & have learned what I needed to learn. Now I’m going to embrace my beautiful life back.
