Flashover: The Power of Fire in a Home Without Fire Sprinklers

Flashover is the point when everything combusts-and there is no chance of survival when it occurs. The video “Fire Power!” tells the dramatic story of how quickly fire spreads and destroys a residential home. While it was a staged fire, with working smoke alarms, it presents a clear case of why residential fire sprinkler systems can provide critical defense against a devastating fire.
In a related demonstration with side-by-side structures-one is protected with fire sprinklers, the other is not-the fire sprinkler extinguishes the fire in just 30 seconds, whereas a raging flashover in the room without a fire sprinkler system provides striking evidence that fire sprinklers can help save lives.

The only problem I had with the video is that it portrays the firefighters at the station as slowly putting on their gear, rather than going quickly. Other than that, great video!

I was just reading about the stardust fire in Dublin in 1981 and didn’t know what a flashover was, now I know that this is what it looked like in the entire nightclub within minutes with all those people trapped inside, just horrific

The disco fire in gothenburg was also pretty big It would have extinguished itself had the main exit door not opened 63 people died This proves closing doors is critical to a fire

@CaitlynYoung1 There are sprinklers that they hide in the ceiling that pop out when the room reaches a certain temperature. Trust me, it is worth the investment. Lives are cannot be replaced, property can be.

Plus your property is already destroyed by the fire anyway

@James Coates. That is incorrect in many circumstances. If a victim is anywhere near the fire or above it, the steam will kill them. I am a firefighter in Syracuse, N.Y. as well as a fire protection technology student. We are constantly warned about the dangers of steam. For example if I am interior on a house with say a bedroom on fire, and I approach the door to the room and begin applying water, the steam that exits the room can easily steam me alive. Even inside of my PPE.

Assuming the room is fully involved and it´s venting thru the window, isn´t it the case that, by applying water from the door (in rapid movements obviously, not holding the hose still) the pressure will direct most of the hot gasses, smoke and steam outside, not inside)? Because, if not, I don´t see why any firefighter would fight any fire ftom inside, and they do as we can see in so many videos? I can see your point in a fully enclosed space with no windows and only a door opened to the inside of the house/building though.

Or applying a lot of water from the outside into a burning structure with victims inside, at the same floor or above. Isn´t this way more dangerous?

Have fire extinguishers is even better

Adding water to fire is the single most effective way to extinguish it. Water converts to steam at a rate of 1700:1, meaning 1 ounce of water will become 1700 ounces of steam. That steam removes the heat, part of the fire triangle; stopping the fire, well, cold. The best way to ensure survival of anyone inside a burning building to stop the burning.

Wrong, water on fire makes steam. When I am on ventilation I can be sure the engine crew has water on the fire when i see the smoke turn to a white or lighter color

Get you facts straight before posting. There are sprinklersystems that are made to extinguish the fire, and there are systems just to control a fire. There are also systems that can respond to smoke. They use smoke, heat or optical detectors and have no glass bulb or water in the piping. These systems are often used in cold area's where the piping may freeze, rendering the system useless or in area's where you don't want water before being sure. Read up on dry pipe, deluge or pre-action systems.

Systems used in cold areas are dry systems; they're the ones with no water in the piping (but they still have glass bulbs & thus still activate individually). _Deluge_ systems are the ones activated by an external fire detection & alarm system, & discharge water from all sprinklers simultaneously (activating a building's fire alarm system won't usually cause the system to release however, unlike what Hollywood movies show). Sprinkler systems are primarily meant for fire control, but *can* _also_ extinguish a fire if the conditions are right (the sprinkler system can't be guaranteed to put out a fire, but if the fire's small enough usually the sprinkler will put it out by itself before the fire department even arrives on scene).

BS on the "fined millions of dollars in damage". The sprinler would have had to have been left on for days to cause millions of dollars in damage. And the parents are not going to be fined the day after it happened, if they are even fined at all. In fact, I call BS on your whole story.

Flashover should be fast burn, but I didn't watch it. for instance this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNp9oNyetN7Impc.html in 2:54 and next one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9d9idBol6yxgp8.html in 0:43. I mean flashover is more dangerous and faster.
