Cleopatra is a name that needs no introduction. She was a queen who was best remembered for seducing Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. However, she was also an accomplished diplomat and leader, had a keen mind for strategy, and knew how to read people - especially her opposition. In the end, she choose her death on her own terms. Yet, was it her own volition? Or was she deemed too much of a threat?

Actually, it wasn’t the last Hellenic kingdom. The Eastern Roman Empire, ruled from Constantinople, was Greek. They called themselves Romans, even so.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaybrown4010 I could see it from both views - yes they spoke Greek and were Greek orthodox - but they considered themselves Roman. Plus they wouldn't be Hellenic - Hellenistic if anything. The Ptolemies just seem much closer to what we think of as Hellenistic.
@bear499
@bear499 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaybrown4010 When I said "the last great hellenistic kingdom of the ancient world" , I was referring to the kingdoms that arose after the death of Alexander the Great and the wars of the diadochi before the establishment of the Pax Romana . The byzantine/eastern Roman empire came to be its own thing way later towards the end of classical antiquity and the beginning of the middle ages.

@@bear499 In addition the Byzantine Empire stretches the definition of Ancient. It lasted long into the Medieval Era and arguably the modern era. While it certainly began in the Ancient times, one could argue that it wasn't a Hellenistic Kingdom but an evolution of the Roman Empire from a latin centric society to one dominated by Greeks. Ptolomeic Egypt was conquered by and ruled by Greeks - it was a Greek Kingdom from its foundation. The Byzantine Empire was arguably merely a continuation of a previous Empire with a cultural shift due to the loss of the previous dominant culture of the Latins.

we'll see which one you pick, when offered the slitting of your throat, the slitting of your belly plus disembowelment immediately after...the slitting of your wrists or poison. She was of royal blood. Her suicide needed to reflect her status; not only in making its final statement-but also, in the elegance of the choice/method of her death.
