Gawd this is so relaxing watching this. I drive a 48 CJ-2A and love her. But I live in FL now so missing the mountain trail rides.

Hi Stan ..... hey great video of your "flattie" ----- THNKS, really enjoyed it ! Myself and a couple pals went to the Telluride BlugGrass Festival a number of years back and we spent some time on some trails up around the old ToM Ball 'ghost-mine". We had a blast and two of my pals took the "Emmagene Pass" trail on the way back in their 88 model stock Bronco. It wasn't "pretty" ---- lol. I have a couple questions if you don't mind. I've owned and fixed up a number of old flatties and have always experienced problems with the stock Carter 1 BBl carbs on just about any incline more than 10 or 12 degrees. The float valve in the bowl would stick whammo ---- gas fouled plugs, won't run ... the whole gambit of problems ! Were you running a stock carb on these ? Did these flatties have the original flat-head 4's in them ? How bout the brakes, any mods here ? Thanks again Stan and keep up the good vids !

mikew4171 Thanks for the comments. Our little group runs the the whole range, from totally stock to totally not stock. My jeep is mostly stock including the engine, carb and brakes. My carb has never given me any trouble on slopes or at altitude. I had it rebuilt by Rick at oldjeepcarbs.com. Of the flatties that you see climbing "The Wall" at Poughkeepsie Gulch, mine is the only stock motor and carb. I do have lockers in both axles and a lower geared transfer case. Everything else is stock.

Thanks Stan ...... I'm amazed ...... "stock" everything ... wow ! In all my experience (mainly using these for hunting buggies) I've never been able to get the brakes to where I would call them "good" ! But I DO love these "old treasures" ! They were made back when AMERICA made "real stuff" ! I have one more that I plan on re-doing but not for "boulder bouncing" or off roading really. Its gonna be worth toooo much I think. Its an all original (all numbers match) 42 MB in very restorable condition . I'll get just as much satisfaction out of cruising it around in full military issue condition "if and when" I get it done. mikew4171 There are some magic words and chants you have to know to get the brakes adjusted right. They never will be modern disks, but adjusted right they do the job. You may already know, but a couple of web sites/forums that are a big help when working on old flatties. G503.com for experts on military rigs. Those guys know everything about military jeep. My favorite and the place I spend most of my internet time is thecj2apage.com. Guys on the CJ2Apage love all flatties and will help out with anything. Not quite the sticklers for originality as they are on the g503.

I doubt whether a modern 4x4 rig with traction control and all the electronic gismos would be able to complete the course.

Bryon, Thanks for watching my video. I mostly can only speak for myself. My Jeep is the patina blue one. I have the stock l134 Go Devil engine with the stock Carter WO carb. I have never really had any altitude or angle issues with my carb. I’m very happy with it. This video is a little old. Recently I have been having a few los speed stalling and idle troubles, but I believe it was my distributor. I have sent it off for a rebuild. The shaft was bent and the advance weight springs were all messed up. I hope that will clear up some of my issues. A lot if the other jeeps in this vid have non stock power plants..

@@Grampas-jeep cool! Yeah I've owned a handful of different jeeps and have an opportunity to own a mint m38a1 with flat fenders! Has the super hurricane engine if I'm not mistaken. Did these jeeps all come stock with Carter carbs? I had a 90 yj with a Carter on the 258..awful experience. Did a nutter bypass but it didn't really help.

Bryon Vary My CJ2A 1948 is the only flat fender I have real experience with, but I’m pretty sure that in the flat fender era they all had Carters of one sort or another. If you have a Carter that won’t perform, check with this guy. He’s great with them. He rebuilt mine for me. www.oldjeepcarbs.com

Hi Stan at 6:34 that sure is a clean looking jeep! Is that free wheel hubs I see on the rear? I would like to see that jeep close up. Like the rock sliders and the front and rear bumper.

Glenn McCormick here's a thread about that jeep. it's a bit old, Ward has painted it since then. Putting those hubs on the rear (requires full floating axles) makes it easier to flat tow. thecj2apage.com/forums/willy-our-46-cj2a_topic15035.html
