Why body position in flat track motorcycle racing is key, the basics of what it is, and a concrete strategy to improve it. Disagree? Did I miss something? Let me know what you think in the comments. I think this is the 10-12th one of your videos I have watched. I want to thank you for your humility and utter professionalism. Your message and tone come without some of the arrogance and puffed chests of others. I mean it, you are communication at such a higher level with the neutrality and humbleness you bring. I am a 25 year street rider. I Have never raced and am considering learning Flat Track or SuperMoto or both. I have 30 min experience on dirt in my life. You keep this up, you will lead the next generation to the dirt. Subscribed and Alerts. Great Program, PLEASE keep it up...

Thanks for the kind words! I hope to encourage participation in Flat Track and share some knowledge so it could be learned the easy way. The hard way can be painful, expensive, and occasionally embarrassing!

Just found your channel and look forward to watching more. I am a club level racer, 62 years old. Here in Australia we have a different kind of racing style, racing on MX bikes utilising the standard 21" front wheel and 18" rear with usually a trials type tyre on the back. I am probably of average ability, have won races but mostly a mid pack competitor. Still, I know I can improve with practice and technique.

Another great video! Completely agree with the idea of recording yourself. Some times we think we are executing something well but actually we are not. As a personal trainer I tell all my clients to film themselves to learn and improve proper form. By the way I have never done a flat track but your channel really inspired me. I am now looking on flat track days here in the UK 🇬🇧. Thank you for your work.

I've done the same thing in the gym. Great way to teach the squat! Seeing your squat from the side really shows you things many not be happening the way you feel they are happening. Glad you are thinking about trying flat track. Guys like you are why I made this channel.

My strategy is different. Have a buddy with a stop watch time each lap ...30 to 40 second laps, any type of track...and on several different tracks. The buddy holds up fingers to show each lap what your time was. That instant feedback is crucial. The next most important thing, is to ride *slowly but with absolute control and perfection on each lap... ride at what you feel is about half as fast as you could go.... but with perfect control. That is the key. Perfect control it is the fastest over time. In the end, the laps that felt the slowest were the fastest.... and the haul arse fastest feeling laps.. sliding into the turns sideways and coming out on the rear wheel were the slowest. Magical insights will occur and your body, and your brain, will develop the fastest instincts... that is instincts not knowledge. DO NOT practice like most do, going as fast as you possibly can and out of control, That only reinforces your errors... Practice perfect control no matter how slow. Feet on the pegs. Try to go slower, and more perfectly... soon you will be going as slow and perfectly as you can and producing the fastest lap times. Practice perfect control not speed. In about 50 laps you will be sliding sideways across rough ground with your feet on the pegs at the fastest laps possible on that track... and you will feel bored and slow....you will think you could walk faster... but you will be sliding sideways at 80 miles an hour over rough ground and coming out of the turns with your front wheel an inch off the ground. and bored... because there will be no danger or risk as you are riding with perfect control. Body position etc will come naturally, your body will learn instinctively, so that there will be no rote memory involved ... it will be instinctual.... and instantaneous ...absolutely the most effective you will learn what is effective from the stop watch . I was with Jack Gordon a day or so before he passed away in his 90's...Jack was a world champion sprint car driver in the 50's and 6o's world wide. Jack sponsored my brother in bike and sprint car racing. I asked him what message he wanted to leave for other racers in the future. He said "find the fastest line on the track, ride that to perfection, if someone passes you let them go, they will be on a slower line, do not let them pull you out of your fastest line on the track" I told Jack ... Drink raw vegetable juice, he ate Sausage and eggs instead, and died smiling and happy while avoiding the stinking carrot juice. Jack did it his way and was a world champion. He passed at his home in Sacramento California. Jack and I are leaving this for you. That is how its done.

Great vid for the green horns...... I have also found that for me I would use a different posistion for two strokes as compared to 4 strokes as the 4's put the power to the ground way smoother and friendlier............my two strokes had a very high rpm power band as most did when I was racing and at times unpredictable but you had to keep it on the pipe if you wanted to be fast, closer to the tank was safe seating on those.......I could ramble on.........just wanted to inform you that what you say is spot on and enjoyed your input........ flat tracked in northern cal. ..........mid 70's........nothing like alotta horsepower !

Great video. Wish I would have found your channel earlier. As for your comments on using the internet as a resource for searching out examples of good technique I would suggest any video of Brad Baker riding short track would be worth paying attention to.

I agree. Brad's style is unique, beautiful, and he made it work. I like using him to point out that fast guys can do the same laptime, but with different styles. So there is not one "correct" style.

Grew up riding woods and moto, recently got the chance to hop on a buddy’s flat tracker, and then a jawa speedway bike. Pitched it a little sideways scared myself a lot. I’ve been looking for a decent bike to build ever since

Good video but needs to go further as giving homework without examples of what to emulate isn't the best. I'd like to see what you consider good as well as bad form. Way back when I was riding my attempts at working on my form was to try and handle the bike like Mert Lawill. Obviously limited results.

Thanks for the comment! As I mentioned in the video, there are many styles that work. Watching various racers that do competitive laptimes will show the similarities and differences. Patterns of the basics that I outlined in the video will emerge. Then filming yourself will allow comparisons to be made. For example, sitting way back on the seat during corner-entry just isn't done. This is a common error people make, and often don't realize they are doing it. Ultimately, laptime decides if something works. Perhaps in the future I'll be able to put together the resources to produce a more in-depth discussion.
