I invited on 3 recent graduates of the coding bootcamp, Flatiron School, to share their experiences at the program. This review is meant to get past the marketing fluff and dive into 3 REAL student experiences. We dove into a LOT in this episode, from the curriculum to even things like questionable clauses with their contracts. Enjoy!

graduated from flatiron at end of 2020 and in a year and a half i've 5X my salary as a journalist... the ISA at flatiron is garbage and a mistake, and for all its faults, bootcamp got me to making an insane salary and doing something i love. i wouldn't take someone's word for it to base such a big decision. you get what you put into it, just find what works for you. if you stick with it, you can pay that money back with salary in a few years. if you're a self-starter, you can probably just learn and do projects without bootcamp -- i couldn't. i needed the teacher, the classmates and the structure. while i'm devastated to learn about the ins and outs of the ISA and how i have to pay back $22,000 for what amounts to some hand holding through the engineering forest, i can't say that the proof isn't in the pudding i mean my life has completely changed. most people won't have my experience, it all averages out probably somewhere in the middle. but i didn't know what the fuck we were doing at bootcamp for a solid two months, just hung on for dear life and stuck with it. it's a big decision but flatiron, GA, all of em are just businesses trying to get your money. use them the way they use you. or just do it yourself. it's USA where education is insanely expensive, capitalism dictates profit above everything, and we're trying to fasttrack our way to a new career. it's definitely not perfect, but it surely gives you what you need to be successful in the industry. i had a great instructor though, and that's really what you're paying for -- that and the structure, curriculum and access to classmates and the little support you get from their little help desk for the first few months. anyway just wanted to provide my experience for anyone out there watching this. take what ANYONE tells you with a grain of salt, bc it's just their personal experience.

What did you discover afterwards having to deal with the ISA ??? I have no extra cash, so ISA is an option. Thanks

Is this experience for the flex strictly online or the in person classes ? They want $17,900 for the flex 40 weeks online class . Just a little hesitant. Alot of money for not being am in person class. Feel like I'm just paying for the name and the rest of the shit I can learn online . But employers like to see a name. I already don't have a cs degree so I need a name lol

I can certainly echo Oscar’s and rick’s experience at flatiron . They didn’t grade labs or look over it. My instructor openly said they only look over that if a student was failing or in danger of falling behind. The labs themselves only taught us how to pass the tests, that’s it. My instructor also said to utilize freecodecamp, udemy & KZfaq videos. She said this on my first day of class in person which made question why I was paying 17+k if that’s her advice. Oscar and Rick mentioned they should’ve done it in person I can definitely say I saw no benefit to in person classes since the main lecture was done remotely on zoom. The rest of class time was either going over previous days labs by ourselves or working on the upcoming lab on the topic that wasn’t taught yet since main lecture was in evening 2-4 pm. I saw all these warning signs and dropped out to get my full money back since it was within the probationary period.

I went to this school. With a *tiny* bit of background in software development (a couple college classes HTML/CSS/C/C++, and self-learning). I found Ruby to be extremely difficult, and struggled with some of the coursework. I couldn't complete the program. I then entered the Thinkful bootcamp, which focused primarily on JavaScript, and relevant frameworks/libraries like React, etc. I completed it, and found a career as a developer. Tonight, I'm revisiting some repos from this school tonight, and I'm examining a very simple project I wrote here (a CLI). It has been 2-3 years now, but my God does Ruby syntax look beyond absolutely confusing and it makes so little sense to me now. Syntactically, most other languages are fairly similar, and I have studied C/C++/Java/JavaScript/C#/Visual Basic, and I've tinkered with Python a good bit now. Ruby seems so much harder to understand than any other language I've ever seen.

Hi Don, I have been watching your videos for the last 5 months now since I started teaching myself to code while trying to decide on a bootcamp. I’ve done my own research to gather an opinion and then from there I’ll compare to your group reviews. I have been back and forth on deciding between General Assembly and Flatiron (as well as others but are harder to get into and I’m on a time crunch), but right at your minute mark 42:58 I decided to look to a little more as I also believe that Ruby on Rails should be replaced. I’m happy to say that I have been admitted into Digital Crafts and will be starting in April and that the program has all in demand languages. This video was the push that I needed to keep looking for a bootcamp that better fitted my needs, so thank you.

I'm in this position now, how was it? Can you recommend it?
@mylesdeboer9746
@mylesdeboer9746 Жыл бұрын
@@flaminfetus Yes I recommend it, but make sure to ask the bootcamp (DigitalCrafts) how many students will be in the session you want to attend, how many TA's will be in the session assiting (Its important to know the TA's balance out with the amount of students there will be), and ask if after once you finish the bootcamp if they would accept you working as a TA based on the state you are residing from. Here was my situation::: I attended with 10 students, 1 TA, 1 Instructor, and was not allowed to be a TA because I am a Californian resident.

Don, would you ever consider expanding your reviews to different programs within Flatiron, etc.? Such as data science? These type of reviews are harder to come by - and would be so helpful as I am figuring out which bootcamps to apply to! Keep up the great work!

They no longer ISA's, I just had my interview with them today and asked about it. They found them "predatory" and no longer offer them.

I'm 2 months into this program and I've been feeling absolutely fantastic with it. I have been teaching myself other skills from KZfaq videos alongside doing my flatiron work and working a full time job with a wife and kid. This video is giving me concerns that I invested my money into the wrong school, but I hope with my preferred method of learning being self teaching, and my weakest area is gunna be finding a job by myself, I hope this school is still a good fit for me after all.

Ron could be a body double for Captain Picard?! 😂👍 Hello Don! Thank you for making great, informative and insightful Coding/Programming/Tech videos! I am looking at two bootcamps in particular in the Orange County (Irvine) area. Specifically LearningFuze and Sabio. I saw the video on LearningFuze, but no Sabio. Just wondering if you have any video or opinion on Sabio. Thank you.

Can anyone explain why these guys all took so long to get a job? I've heard so many people get a job like 1-2 months after the program, or even signing a deal before they finish.
@gsabella4
@gsabella4 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, i'm actually listening to a flatiron school info session as we speak - they definitely advertise 1-3 months to get jobs. However, most of these bootcamp grads that Don interviews, have had a TOUGH time finding gigs! If i'm going to invest $16K and sacrifice some income from cutting back on work, I have to land a gig within a few months

@@gsabella4 I don’t know, sounds kind of suspicious. How many jobs did they apply to? Did they start applying right away? Did they study leetcode? Did they struggle in the camp?
