Someone remarked, ' love that close-up of Earl's right hand !'. Well, 'He' had the greatest right hand attack (drive, tone and tempo), ever. I can hear swing music in his playing, as well.Whatever you want to call it. He was just mesmerizing to watch and listen to. !!! Now, Don Reno, had the best left hand approach, I believe. His playing was note perfect, (his melodic style, I think draws me to that perfect clean sound, and with not using a capo). If he did use a capo, then I stand to be corrected, but I haven't seen him use one. Earl's the 'Man', but, I still love watching and listening to the great late Don Reno, as well. Two different styles, two great players, they were special...

I was in a 2nd rate bluegrass band for years. This is the sound we always strived for, but never could accomplish. Flatt and Scruggs were the absolute best. There are some other good bands out there, but nobody will ever be able to compete with the masters.

presently on the homestead farm, hearing the cattle lowing in the lane, grass is looking green, wondering how the old folks are at home.

I wonder if someone could tell me what the show host says after Lester says "oh yea, sure"? I grew up listening to these ole boys as my grandfather was a huge fan and still listen today. Pa, I wish you were still here so we could listen together. I love you and miss you every day.

To Wayne Thomas: Thanks for pointing out that Floyd Chance is on bass! Before I saw your comment I was thinking how much I liked this bass player and how well he fit in with Lester and Earl's timing. I did not know who he was.

@plowboymark Marty Stuart was born in 1958. This was filmed around 1962. Marty went pro at age 12, in 1970. Not with Flatt and Scruggs, but with The Sullivans. He first performed with Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass on Labor day, 1972. Scruggs was not part of that group. Flatt and Scruggs broke up in 1969. Given that info, it's not likely to be Marty Stuart in this video.

I like Lester but I love Earl. He was and still is the master IMO. He could sure that "banjer", as he used to call it, sing.

i'm sure Scruggs would 'prechiate' that compliment about his 'banjer pickn'

Lester was the greatest rhythm guitarist in BG. the two of them really had a great groove in their playing together.

I concur. He was, still is ,the greatest banjo player ever...A thousand years from now, if we don't screw up the planet any worse, they will still be using Earl Scruggs name, while reference to anything related to the banjo...🪕🪕🪕

@CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Just Lester and Earl were guest on this episode of the Pet Milk Opry show (around 1962 if memory serves me correctly), that featured Porter Wagoner as the main star.

I’m probably reading something in here that’s not true but it seemed like Lester was going out of his way for his rhythm guitar to be heard and put in a few extra tags more than usual to let the guy on the electric guitar know hey buddy this is bluegrass and there’s no room for electric guitars here which is one of the main reasons Lester and Earl broke up years later but I’m probably just seeing something that’s not there. None the Less Flatt and Scruggs and the foggy mountain boys was the greatest bluegrass band ever.
