Lovely room as is! I’d lighten the pillows and curtains first. If it’s still too dark for your eye, I’d paint the inside. Your hutch looks like a hutch that my mom left me. I did paint it and I love it. It has a curved glass front. So pretty. TFS

All the points you have raised it legit and your concerns are real it resonates with me. Here is what I will suggest, the hutch is very pretty and works in your space but if the wood is making your space not as air then paint it. Our home and furniture should work for us not us work for it. So if you want it airy, paint the hutch either inside or out. It doesn’t take away from the old charm. It will be even more unique to your home and style. But remember just painting it won’t be enough, you will need to tie the colors together. I know you are reluctant to change the curtains, but consider changing them to work well with the color you pick for the hutch, that will brighten up the room. Just sit with it all and they go for what will bring you the most joy. I did something similar, bought a 1940’s Hollywood Regency credenza but it was all wood color and in perfect condition but I knew what I wanted was airy and off white and creams so I had it painted and I am so in-love with it cause it just works abd looks even better. One of a kind. No one else has my credenza in my color. It took me 2 weeks to pick color for the credenza and I will do it all over again. The whole idea is to bring in old and new to create warmth and show case your personality and style!

Thanks for the feedback! I have painted furniture in the past -- which means I am loving what you wrote about this 1940s credenza! -- but I just want to make sure it's the right decision for our hutch. Some pieces are really good just the way they are; others may need a little "refresh". It takes a discerning eye, I believe. Hope you come back and see us!

Yes, if you don't want to painted the whole piece, painting inside would lighten it up. Brighter pillows in chairs would also be nice.

Some dusty blue pillows would look good in your dining room. It's full of warm creams, beiges, browns, and wood tones. A splash of cool blue would balance the warmth and pull out the blue in your dishes in the hutch . Overall, it's a beautiful room. I like the detail on the ceiling. Tfs.
