Thanks for leaving your post open. It was very helpful and enlightening to read ALL the comments and they helped me make a decision as to how to proceed to getting rid of fleas in my house. Good luck to everyone who shares this issue.

I call these traps a "flea circus", ha ! Your traps are good, but I would make two adjustments. One adjustment would be to use an extension with a night light instead of a lamp. For the night light, don't use an LED light bulb, use the light bulbs that get hot, fleas are attracted by the light and it's warmth. You have to remember how fleas can jump pretty high, and if your lamp covers a huge area of the container, the fleas are going to be hitting the lamp instead of falling into the container. The second adjustment I would make to your trap is to use vegetable oil instead of water and soap. I used water and soap at the beginning but the problem with that, is that water evaporates in a couple of days. With vegetable oil on the other hand, you could have the trap set for over a year and the oil will still be there. Oil is also thick, making it a deadly quicksand for fleas. This flea circus does eliminate fleas completely, you have to remember that the fleas lay eggs, lots of eggs. So after you eliminate the fleas, guess what ? The eggs will hatch later on, make it seem like you haven't gotten rid off the fleas. But you are going to be able to eliminate the fleas with this trap using vegetable oil. After days, you are going to start noticing smaller fleas, indicating that you have gotten rid off the adult fleas and now the newly hatched fleas are the ones remaining. I would leave the trap on 24/7, and don't be fooled, when it seems like you got rid off the fleas, don't forget about the eggs, so don't remove the circus trap until you don't see one single flea fall into the trap for a month. I have a cat, so I have to use this flea circus trap every summer. I hope I helped you in anyway, I understand the pain and struggle, stupid fleas are 100 times worse than mosquito's !

EddieNanakase Unfortunately, oil of any type will not work. The reason that dish soap works, is because we have to change the the density of the water. When that is changed, that is why the fleas cannot come out of the water. If oil is applied to the water, they will be able to float on top of the water, thus, being able to jump out, and not dying. All of these things have been tested for years by scientists trying to discover what will take care of the flea situation. Another interesting fact about fleas, is the fact that you can place a flea in a glass of water for an hour. After an hour you can remove the flea, lay it aside on top of a paper towel, or something else, give it 24 hours, and it will in fact, revive itself. Fleas do not actually drown, they're only held down in the water giving people the opportunity to flush them down a a water way. Another study showed that, you could do the same thing with a flea up to 24 hours at the bottom of a container submerged in water. Give them up to 24 hours on a dry surface, and they will revive themselves. I found this astonishing. That's why it's very important that every flea be flushed down a toilet or sink.

Solar McCoy Not sure how that'd work. I know for a fact the water, with a tiny amount of Dawn works. When its not broke,....Why fix it?? Also, I went ahead and purchased a Victor flea trap four days ago. Yes, that works, too. But, they're $15 each. Geeee. The homemade version is best way to go. They work much better if the container (or possibly bottom) is WHITE.

Another tip is to place a plant beside the trap. The light attracts them, but the plant helps attract them as they are sensitive to carbon dioxide that plants release at night. Dormant flea pupae are particularly sensitive to carbon dioxide, so this may be a great way to catch young fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs. Works for me.

Fleas take at least 24 hours to drown. You have to add a little dish soap after you fill the bowl & swirl it around with your finger. Just a tiny amount of soap. The water should still be clearish and not sudsy. The fleas will drown under a minute in the water with soap solution.

Doesnt the soap kill them before they're able to drown,?
@RichRotorhead
@RichRotorhead 2 жыл бұрын
@@migueltigrelazo No. The soap softens the water so that fleas (among other insects) can't stand on the water and they then sink and drown.

so we had the same problem in a rental house we own. Actually it was only in the office of that house. I thought i did everything including vacuuming, spraying a ton of chemical and even having a pest control company come in. After 2 months we would still see the occasional flea hop on us if we went in that room. I did a ton of research on how fleas live, lay eggs, sprinkle dried blood and flea crap around their eggs and WHY you can't kill them until they hatch. I decided to buy a can of flea killing spray (from Lowe's) and figure out where they were hibernating. I found anything that had the look of flea droppings and wiped and sprayed them all. I also took any pillows, bedding, and anything else that had flea remnants on them and put them in white plastic garbage bags and sprayed the inside of the bags and then sealed them. The fleas are not solely attracted to heat, they also look for movement and vibration to wake them up. Wipe up the nests and that will eliminate the problem. Took me 3.5 hours to fix the problem for good. The bags I filled had hundreds of fleas that hatched and died while sealed. there were so many more fleas than I ever thought. You need to kill the nesting spots.

Also, vacuum the floors every day. Put some diatomaceous earth in the vacuum bag if has bag system. If bagless, just clean it after each vacuuming and seal up trash so the don't jump out. Daily floor cleaning is essential to get the eggs and larva. Do keep diatomaceous in corners. And don't forget to clean under furniture also. Fleas hide in the dark.

You may also find the traps draw fles from a larger area if you reduce the temperature in your home. The fleas are atracted to the heat, but if they are comfortable near a reliable food source (you in your bed, kids on the couch Etc.) they will only stray to another heat source if it is more atractive to them. The cooler the environment the further away they will detect the heat source.

We have hardwood floors TO and 3 cats. We are currently battling a flea invasion. What I have found that kills more fleas on hardwood, than anything else we've tried, is to vaccum every inch of floor space and then mop every inch of floor space with Murphy's Oil Soap. Thanks for posting this. My husband wanted to try it, now we know it's not for us.

This method REALLY works, as you've showed. When I have to spray, I use Cedarcide. It's made in the USA, is non-toxic to humans and pets and can even be sprayed on a newborn baby. It will even kill spiders and scorpions! It is an indiscriminate killer, however, and should only be used indoors. It's great for traveling with, as you can prevent picking up bedbugs/fleas from hotels/motels that you visit. Make no mistake, those buggers are found in fancy hotels, too. Thanks for posting!

I am fighting the same thing and here is some things I learned. Mop the entire house with bleach water mix. It doesn't need to be very strong 1- 1/2 oz. to 1 gal. or so. Use the same mixture in a spray bottle to get under appliances. They love hiding under them. Use a safe indoor flea killer to treat sofas and get the fabric covering under them. You can use the bleach mix, but test it first so you don't ruin your furniture. After that, you will have better luck with the water traps. I put Dawn/water mix in a spray bottle and one mist spray on top of the water is enough to trap them and you don't have to stir it that way. Also, white dishes work best for the traps.

Diatomaceous earth is very cheap (about $8. for a 4lb bag) and effective insect killer. Its nontoxic to people or pets. You can cast it over your lawn and around your carpets, rugs and furniture; leave it for 24 hours and then vacuum carpets and sweep floors. Don't worry, there is plenty left to be effective. Outdoors, even if it rains, the D.E. traces still remain where you cast it.

I've recently discovered my house here in southern Louisiana where it's usually warm, wet year round..a flea heaven, my flea hell. My poor dog is INFESTED with fleas, gotten worse & it's Dec. which i thought fleas would die.. NO they're worse 😭 today i take on the task of bathing/flea dipping my fur baby & containing her in a freshly treated area after her bath temp. til I clean/treat her living area. My home is ALL hardwood floors, no throw rugs down thank God... NEVER have i had or seen fleas invade my home carpet/otherwise. I'm BEYOND frustrated, my dog itching non stop even after flea pill at vets & me getting weird itchy new bites on my legs mostly but couple on my arm. watching your video I feel something on bare leg with light on phone I seen it was A FLEA! I NEVER thought they could live as long on hardwood was raised in Wyoming total opposite climates & told carpets worse. watching your video disgusted me cause I'm now having this issue & it's frustrating & gross etc... I see your home in video isn't cluttered dirty etc so you have my attention now lol fleas don't just live in filth as I was taught as a child.. I'm gonna try your tricks in video & see how it plays out. Any other positive feedback please comment. What's min time you leave water out? & do I change water as needed when fleas jump in or wait certain amount of time for it to work better? STILL shocked over hardwood flooring harder to treat than carpet ugh. Praying this works, wish me luck lol

My 2 cents… or more like tree-fitty … anyway… … He’s been thanks great video. I appreciate your open minded curiosity. It produces some good out-of-the-box thinking. The most successful high-volume flea trap I ever made started out with a large sheet of white shelf paper that I already had, but turned around with the sticky side out… I just taped it to part of a pizza box, I think. In the middle of that, was a bowl; actually, I think it was a very small dorm-size little crockpot type thing, and I had “baited it“ with some really potent iron powder that I got from opening a couple of my wife’s mega iron-for-anemia capsules, on the odd chance that it might give off some odor that the fleas would interpret as blood, and that just went in with a small amount of as unscented as I could find dish soap and water. You only need enough to break the surface tension of the water, which isn’t much. What I added, because I had seen so many things about how carbon dioxide attracts fleas and many other things, after racking my brain trying to figure out a way to generate some carbon dioxide that would last a few hours, what I came up with was an even smaller bowl or Dixie cup, or whatever it was… That had molasses, a little water, and some common Fleischmanns brewer’s yeast that would just sit down in the water, detergent, iron supplement “moat” inside the crockpot and exhale the imitation mammal-breath. I kept the air circulation in the room to a minimum in the hopes that the heavier co2 would flow down to the carpet, and just creep along staying down where the fleas are… Needless to say, leaving that overnight, when I checked on it the next day, the shelf paper looked like it had been sprinkled with black pepper, A black layer of dead fleas marinated at the bottom of the crockpot, and a bunch of them were clinging to the sides of the crockpot, just anywhere there was a surface. I kept replenishing that until it seemed to only be catching a few, and THEN started including it in my maintenance program that I use in the house during flea season. This particular case was, literally, by orders of magnitude, the most extreme case of infestation I have ever seen… It was in a place where nobody walked, but that the cats previously frequented - that they now clearly avoided. In such a case, a person could dial up the intensity bye maintaining a much higher CO2 concentration by maintaining a large block of dry ice which of course sublimates directly into the gaseous form, but leaving it in a monolithic block will slow that down over just powdering it with small pieces. This would facilitate an initial massive knockdown of the population that is obviously not easily sustained, but in such a target rich environment, give you the most bang for your buck … They don’t give that stuff away for free … but it appears to be readily available… The little town I live in has a Walmart that keeps it, as well as an H-E-B that keeps it, and there may even be others that I don’t know about… Meat lockers, deer-processing outfits etc. Anyway, one could use it to increase the attractiveness of the trap, and possibly cut the population in that area by a very large margin, leaving a much more manageable situation. Let me hasten to add here, if someone is considering doing something like this, this method, while trapping as well as killing the fleas, by no means excuses one from the necessity of vacuuming like a person possessed… The presence of flea eggs, larvae, and pupal stages that aren’t really mobile must be dealt with, and especially in combination with powders that dehydrate all manner of carpet contaminants, rendering them more easily removed, (… I’ve used commercially available carpet powders, diatomaceous earth, plain corn starch, baking soda, and even Sevin-dust,) but whatever I happened to use seemed to help a lot, so I would just use whatever I had available) in combination with a thorough vacuuming is a critical part of this methodology. IM in an unusually fortunate situation in that I inherited a very old school Orick brand upright vacuum that’s probably almost as old as I am (7/4/59) that puts modern upright vacuums to shame it seems, especially in compacted, dense, deep-fiber carpets. They even still make HEPA-grade disposable filter bags that fit the old battleship, and yes, changing those out is a pain in the ass, but it’s worth it because they are very thorough, and they keep the fleas contained inside until you can get it outside into the dumpster or whatever… … Well here I’ve done it again… I set out to just post a simple helpful hint or idea, and I wind up writing a non-fiction short-story that … well, … really isn’t all that short… Sorry about that, but if you’ve read this far, bless your heart, and I am truly humbled,… I hope maybe some of this helps, or at least triggered a smile or a chuckle … Hey, it gets to where you can’t do what you want anymore, so you just do WHAT you can, as BEST you can, WHEN you can, with WHATEVER you can get your hands on… Sucks getting old doesn’t it? Lol

I bought some dip/yard spray that is 4 times the strength and went over the whole yard 3 times. Dipped the dogs a couple of times. Still a few fleas on the dogs. Used coconut oil, apple cidar vinegar, D. Earth, dishwashing soap and still a few fleas. Just worked Vinegar into the fur real good. It's under control now, but I will have to spray again I'm sure when the eggs hatch. Planning to put down this termite treatment in the yard soon. Trying to keep the fleas out of the house too.

I moved into an apt that had fleas on May 4 2021 that were biting me in the kitchen and on my living room floor that caused inflammation and huge red whelps. I couldn't see the fleas but I had a huge 16 yr old plant that had to sit on the floor to keep from blocking the window light. When I was taking the pot to bathroom to rinse and water I found over one hundred white wiggly things in the saucer to discover they were flea larva. I went into panic over load. I rinse out the saucer and started rinsing the plant with water in the shower. I used my 40% DEET insect repellant on my plant. I had originaly used soapy water because I thought midge flies, biting knats or noseums, were the problems for my rash. Once I discovered the larvae were flea larvae I rushed to store to get diatomaceous earth to cover plant, Black Flag spray for flea and tick even spray for bedbugs and tick and fleas and sprayed floors, furniture, baseboards, closets you name it. I have a bug phobia. I bought flea traps to check out the population and got maybe three fleas then I resprayed everything. I moved the huged plant outside and will divide my Clivia into 4 plants, wash off the soil and respray the soil to make sure all bugs are gone. I am using the Black Flag spray. I will repot the bulbs into 4 smaller pots. Will also spray neq potting soil with alcohol. Plants will not sit on the floor ever again. I hope to move from this dark, moldy, flea riddled place. I was forced to move here and know I have other options. I needed to vent. People check your animals for flea whenever they go outside. They suffer also. Apt managers vacuum your bldg daily and do flea checks since you allow pets. The tenants pay an unrefunded deposit and pet rental for this to be taken care of.

Borax works-- although it can be messy it does work- it dries out the bodies of the fleas and the eggs- spread a box of borax on the floor and use a broom to move it around being sure to get it in all the cracks- leave a week vaccum and then repeat until problem is solved--- hope this helps

I used the simpler design flea traps with sheets of sticky paper and a small light. I got 5 of them and put one in each room to determine the worst areas. If I had used a bowl of water, my cat would drink it. This was a method of measuring our progress in getting rid of these pests. There also was a university paper published on what light frequency worked best to attract fleas.

Try not putting the light directly over it. They run from light they just like the heat. I’ve gotten over 100 fleas in 3 days. Also, using a plate with a small candle in the center then put enough water on the plate so it doesn’t spill over. I use salt on my floors and carpet then leave it for a week, It’ll get in all the cracks in the wood floors and work it’s way to the bottom of the carpet and stay there. and dehydrate the flea larvae. baking soda works too. I vacuum my wood floors just like my carpets. I made a homemade lavender spray that I use on bedding and everything else daily. They can’t stand the smell. They don’t like Peppermint either so I’m gonna get some peppermint plants.

finally got rid of fleas. Nothing but vacuuming and washing floors...and brushing the cat 2-3 times each day with a FLEA COMB! After checking him once or twice a week after the whole ordeal, no bites, no dirt, and no scratching. It changed my outlook on using flea medication...it may be much much more tedious with a regular flea comb, but it can work.

I see videos like this and I feel so bad for you. We had an awful flea infestation to last summer. We have a dog and 2 cats and it felt like we were at all-out war with the fleas! We tried everything from over the counter sprays, to things like what you are showing here in your vid, to old wives tales. We were desperate. It felt like we were being held hostage by fleas in our own home! I know that sounds over the top but I'm disabled so I was stuck in this house that was being taken over by fleas and I was being bitten as well as my animals. I felt so helpless. We even talked about moving out of our home of over 5 years! We finally decided to try an over the counter medication called Capstar, it's also called FastCaps, PetArmor, CapGuard, etc but essentially it's generic name is called Nitenpyram. It was amazing and worked WONDERS. Pretty much you give it to all the animals in your house and any flea that feeds on your animals will drop dead. The only downside is that it only kills the adult fleas that feed on your animals so it won't kil the larvea or eggs, so what you have to do is give your animals the first dose which will kill all the adults, wait a day or two, give the larvae time to mature and grow into adults then give your animals a second dose, then wait for the eggs to mature and repreat the process....if you do this 3 or 4 times over the course of a couple weeks it should get rid of your infestation. Capstar is expensive if you get it in stores but you can go on eBay and get generic Nitenpyram for a fraction of the cost you'd pay for brand name regardless of the fact that it's the exact same medication. Today I purchased a new supply for the summer on eBay and got 18 capsules for $13.00, whereas if you get it at Walmart you only get 6 pills for like $18 to $20 bucks depending on where u live and the brand you go with. Just by treating our pets with this stuff it got rid of our entire infestation. We didn't even have to treat our house because once all the eggs and larvae hatched the flea would eventually feed on one of our pets and die. The only downside is vacuuming up all the dead fleas for a week or so lol! I really hope this helps somebody. This medication was our lifesaver. I know for a fact it saved us from having to move out of our home and it gave us and our pets peace in our own home again. Now I keep a supply of it on hand (especially during the summer months), and if I see any of my pets start scratching, I give them all a dose and nip it in the butt before it becomes a problem, by doing this we don't even have to use any other flea prevention on our pets. Our vet knows this is how we prevent flea problems in our household with our fur babies and he's fine with it and says it's completely safe.

I believe this would have been much more effective if you had the water in something not so deep. More like half inch deep baking pan. Make sure the water is a lot more soapy as well. The dish soap is what kills them. Don't put the light so close either because that's too hot for them. They want to go where it's warm not hot. They are attracted to light, because they know that's where you find warmth. With light shining on it from 3 feet should be sufficient. Also, with sticky pads. Instead of glue, spray the soapy water all over the pads. Try to cover a bigger area around the pan with the pads. I'm willing to bet that the numbers would at least double.

This year in the summer of 2019 none of those anti flea medications are really working. I have three cats and those medications are very expensive ! I have used several of those several times. I worry about my cats" health and cats" liver trying to cleanse themselves of all those chemicals which accumulate month after month year after year. I think this year anti flea medication is not working for the same reason that antibiotics are not working. I think insects are building up resistance toward the insecticides. 😕😣

I have 9 cats had a dog visitor got infested. It's a battle but I am winning. It past I tried everything. You got to hit the whole house and cats at same time. Capstar pills work to kill all fleas in 24 but are expensive but got 50 Quick-Caps flea pills for 18.50 on ebay. That's dirt cheap and they work safely. 1 pill per cat. No need to bath them. I been giving them weekly. As for the house I tried every kind on the market. Enforcer works not bad but a big can of Raid Ant and Roach spray wipes them out. Fleas built a tolerance to flea sprays! Vacuum well prior and bag and seal what u suck up or put down toilet. Use little dawn in soapy water in white dish under a night light to show if you are winning. No need for a lamp. They just like light. Last I checked I had 2 fleas and none on cats, no itching fur grown back. No scabs on allergic cats to fleas. Trust me it's a battle that can be won. With 9 cats and a 3 level house I know. Good luck guys!

I've had the same problem for the past 2 months and thankfully the past week I've seen none and haven't got bit. I used dawn and organic coconut oil on my kitten and pitbull. Washed them 3 times and rubbed the coconut oil on them several times a day so they won't bite scratch their self's. I let them stay in bathroom until I mopped several times and sprayed spectracide bug stop home barrier. Keep in mind I sprayed about 4 times a day. Once in the morning b4 I left house once when I got home, another after dinner and b4 bed. Reminder I had to leave out for a few minutes after I sprayed and I did that a few times a week. Washed all rugs, bedding and towels. And I also have wood floors. Even the vet said the fleas are bad this year and everyone is having a problem. I wish everyone the best.

I had fleas for over 12 months and got wooden floor as well through out the entire house, and recently had to get rid of my fathers dog because got sick over it mentally. Seeing a theripists now for axienty, and so on. I gave her to the animal control for a good home because I can't take care of her nomore. My father is diagnosed with an illness and im his caretaker. She digs holes in the backyard, and finds ways to run away and jump in the lake, go into "Do not tresspass swamps" - private property gator lakes. I use to give her showers daily, get her groomed, and bought ton of flea treatments for her, including showering her with baby oil to suffercate the fleas. At times i would keep the baby oil on her for days just to make sure they suffercate if i cant pluck them off her skin. Her furr coat is thick, and its hard to find every little fleas in her skin. She was scratching for over 11 months, and i scratch now constanyly daily even after a fresh shower i go back onto the pc and then mins later i feel something jumping on my knees, and feet. I got a full body red marks on my entire body, and im in pain from this. Been back and fourth to the emergency room, and doctors said get an exterminator and I honestly been through 17 of them in less then a year. When the dog use to run away I use to find her with the help of the police, or fire dept hours later... I had exterminators come out 17 times and i paid $750 each time, and the fleas continue to bite me when I'm sitting down on the pc, and my reaction time is not fast enough to slap my leg, and catch them... They bite me, and hatch more eggs from what I read they consume blood to hatch thousands. I found black pepper dirt all in my mattress for months, and i would vacum everything daily like a maniac, and buy tons of medicines online for furtnature, floors, mop and sweep daily, and nothing seems to work an i dont even have a pet anymore and constantly still sweep and vacum.. I started using the dogs "Vets + Best Flea and Tick Shampoo for my scalpe, arm pits, and below to shower daily with it. The cooling sensation of the pepeprmint soothes my wounds when I rinse off. I'm not sure what to do other then move out of this house all together..

The problem with fleas isn't just the adult fleas; it's the eggs. They can live for over two years before emerging when the climactic conditions are just right. Unfortunately, chemicals are the only 100% sure fix. You didn't mention if you have any animals in the house. Flea dip everyone if you do. Also, vacuuming the whole house a couple times a day will help get rid of eggs. I'm surprised you have such a problem with all hardwood floors... carpet is usually their home. Best of luck to you... I know it's a hard battle.

DE powder does a great job. Though from my experience, it takes awhile. We have a flea infestation currently and we leave DE powder where we see flea most. I seem to notice they are getting fewer. Also, I boiled and then simmer a handful of citrus fruit we have here in the Philippines called calamnsi. It’s like a lime but very small. Squeezed out the juice, then boiled the skin and pulp. I sprayed them on places we always see them. After a while, they come out and we vacuum those suckers. If I’m feeling evil, I catch them with scotch tape. Die slow, sucker. Man this reply is long.

Sevin dust works. Also, don't forget your yard. Even with no pets people get fleas and ticks in their yards.

Something you can do first is get flea powder that kills fleas and powder your vacuum bag a lot. Then vacuum everything - furniture, floors, rugs, etc. Plug up your vacuum hose because they can escape but the ones you get inside the bag will die. Then, try the water and dishsoap. The issue is that the dishsoap water trick won't kill eggs and larvae. All that said, unless your pet is completely flea free, you will just have another infestation so you have to deflea your animals everyday.

For anybody else who's watching those the sides are too high on that pan as well Not to mention the light only attracts them to the area you don't have to put the light in the water

If your doing this use a large plate and a candle in the middle works better and they won't miss jumping in there to drown

I live in a big house. Using a bowl of soapy water and a light does nothing for my flea problem. My vet said that flea bombs no longer work. I bombed my whole house twice last summer. Still had fleas. In fact I had fleas until January!

The light doesn't attract them it's the warmth they take the heat for an animal or prey the light just keeps the the bowl warm that's how it works 😊

Your dish needs to be more shallow so they can jump into it and you need to add enough dawn to make a blue tinge thumbs up I watched a little further looks like they took the bait good job.

+Mr Goldfish I actually wound up with an issue in car because they were all over my clothes. I don't think a hot shower even touches them. I had to bomb the car, it was bad.
