I've never cleaned a wall that wasn't a bathroom wall unless there was visible dirt/stains/cobweb on it. 🤔 I there IS a visible stain on a wall, then I can't think properly until that's cleaned up or, in the case of stains that won't go away with any cleaning agents available, covered up.

The sheer amount of physical labor this takes is daunting. We're about to start a similar project, so really appreciate the tips. I will say, for those who "don't understand how someone could live like this"... No one ever thinks this could happen to them. Circumstances pile up. it's a series of little things... and often people are too proud to ask for help, and/or have mental health challenges that prevent them. A little compassion goes a long way, and if you have elderly folks in your life, or someone you know might be struggling... Look in on them. Ask how you can help. It's no one's job to take on someone else's "hoarding" problem- their problems might just be too big for you to help, and that's ok. But you'd be amazed how much you can help by just offering an afternoon of assistance, whatever you're able to do. We had a dear friend come a few hours a day for about a week and help us clear the rubbish from our porch into a dumpster, and what a huge difference! Sometimes a little help can make a real impact on someone's life.

So glad I came across your comment. I grew up in a garbage house and let mine get pretty bad over the last twenty two years. You'd think I'd avoid that at all costs but here I am. A combination of of circumstances-- full time jobs for my wife and I and both of us being pack rats and a touch lazy. Two daughters in private school so no money for a much needed maid. I've finally gotten off my ass and started taking care of it and am at the floor cleaning stage. This video was the first one I came across that pretty much matches my once very nice wood floors. Now I know what to do. It's nice to know others out there struggle with this or can sympathize with those who do as you clearly do.

I've done it once, on floors that were coated in a mix of cigarette ashes, cooking fumes and other crap. Used a dual-brush floor scrubbing machine, and a shop vac to suck up the water. I remember hearing that tip a long time ago. It was common for people to have small amounts of sawdust around from wood working projects like fixing fences and building shelves. I think that stables and barns buy sawdust chips for bedding. They also use it to clean the aisles in the stables when they sweep them.

My dad and I just finished refurbishing an old hoarder’s house, and I thought it was bad, but it was nothing compared to this! This house looks crazy nasty, but it’s nice to see some of its original character shine through once the grime and years of abuse are peeled away. Awesome job!
@morphman86
@morphman86 Жыл бұрын
Hoarder houses can get pretty nasty. If you're interested, there are generally speaking 5 levels of hoarding, and this house looks like it was at level 4. That means pretty nasty, but still recoverable. At level 5 you get into the ones where cleaners will recover pets the occupant lost years earlier and where the occupants make "nests" for themselves to sleep on because there are no surfaces left. Level 4 is still bad, and a big warning sign of mental instability. It will require outside intervention for the person to realize they need help, but generally, the person can make a full recovery. Level 5 is what happens when they don't get that help for years or decades.

OOf. I encountered a LOT of homes like this back when I did home cleaning in rural Minnesota. All those black stains can come up with concentrated peroxide. It's best done when it's warm out though. It can also do wonders on nicotine/tar covered walls. These floors need a good sanding and refinishing anyhow. Great job overall. 😉👍 (If you are considering using peroxide you can usually pick up gallon jugs of it at beauty salons or off of good old Amazon. It comes as a cream so it stays in place for the most part. Make sure you have a respirator though. It's a super oxidant so it can cause off gassing.)

I cleaned an apartment with nicotine stained walls. Someone told me to spray with bathroom scrubbing bubbles foam, let it set, then use sponge mop or squeegee to remove ( staring at ceiling and dragging to floor). That process was quick and took much of the nastiness off. Of course, needed to be wiped down a couple more times but made it much easier.

Thank you for doing the work so that paint will be able to stick to walls, the floors are renewed, etc. Good eye for catching details, a lot of persistence and good thought in your work.

Actually it's not. The hard plastic and aggressive brushes will damage the floor. Though the floor is so bad nothing could make it worse

I'm learning so many ways to tackle the worse kind of grime watching you. Ty for sharing! Wonder if the homeowner would let us see the completed "after"? We're kind of invested in seeing it through.

I really enjoy your videos - very satisfying to watch the transformation. It took me several minutes to realize this was the same house as the kitchen I saw you clean up in another video.

Smart use of the carpet cleaner. I do the same on my kitchen and mud room floors. They’re both textured so I use a scrubber/buffer machine to saturate the floors with cleaner and scrub at the same time. Once that’s done, I go back over everything with the carpet cleaner to suck up all the liquid. Works great.

grandma Rose here l love watching you as it motivates me and it isn't about the cleaning as much as the organizing my kids always teased me about putting me on the hoarder show but can't because l was a neat hoarder lol well at almost 70 yr and all my ailments which l know is me abusing my body in my youth due to washing floors on my knees and working jobs most men did as in heavy and lifting and moving etc l sometimes had 2 jobs raising my kids plus home and people would say you could eat off my floors so l always was proud of that with 5 kids and no monetary or emotional or any support of any kind l am proud of me but watching you reach those high places with ease makes me so envious lol anyways dear love your show and suck it LMAO thank you for making my days.....

So glad I stumbled upon this video! We sadly have floors similar to this. Part was ripped up with carpet and badly stained. The other part used to be good but we had a litter of pups in early winter so we had to do what we could inside. Needless to say, after the pups left we cleaned as best as we could but obviously the stains remain. Additionally being a multi dog household, we recently experienced very wet/muddy weather that you could barely keep up with mopping. There’s a lot of debris on the floor that I have been struggling to clean up with traditional mopping. I have the exact same carpet cleaner and a bio enzyme floor cleaner that works wonders. I will have to try this cleaning/rinsing method on occasion until we have funds saved up to lay vinyl laminate over the floors.

Wow! My garage floor is cleaner than those floors 😮. In fact I think my chicken coop floors are cleaner! It’s heartbreaking to think how bad it must have been to live in that! I can only imagine how unwell a person would have to be to allow their surroundings to decay to such a degree! And that bullet hole in the door 🫣 much much respect for the work that you do ❤ it’s amazing! Thank God there are still hard work selfless people out there who take on the impossible 😊

Wow! I just found your channel and love your content! In 2017 my husband and I bought a house that had been hoarded and we had to do tons of work to it, but one thing the seller did was refinish the hardwood before listing it. After watching you do this, I am so so grateful they did. Just tearing out carpet, scrubbing, and putting kilz on the floors and walls was plenty enough. Good job!! I’m amazed at the transformation!

Very interesting way to take care of the grimy floor. Looks worlds different now! I know it had to take you a long time to get it to that point, floor scrubbing done right takes time. Amazing job! I just purchased a home that was smoked in for 50 years. I paid below-market value because of a few things, however it was still in great condition. It smelled terribly of smoke and everything you touched was covered with sticky nicotine and tar buildup. We started with the paneling, pulled it all down and burned it. We scrubbed the floor, no where near as bad as what you had to clean. Funny, we did it almost the way you had done, using Murphy's Oil Soap and the same red handle brush from Walmart. We slop mopped it, then scrubbed, then came back over it again with fresh Murphy's, and it looked amazing. We used an entire bottle on all the floors. Since we pulled the paneling down, the baseboards had to be removed. Some of the boards broke upon removal and had to replace them with a new style. Luckily I was able to salvage 75% of the old stuff. I made a bunch of repairs in the closets and the dining room. Since these were off-the-walls, I scrubbed them at the sink with Murphy's. Lots of spares to repair to use for repair in the bedrooms. I scrubbed down all the walls using Pin-Sole, and that was the absolute most discussing thing ever. I had my buddy's brother professionally paint every room, using high quality primer and paint from Sherwin Williams. Sunday, I scrubbed down the yellow window frames, now they look gleaming white! I still have to clean the glass because I ran out of time. Today, the hard wood floors have been sanded down and will be finished with new stain! I still need to remove and replace all the light fixtures, wall receptacles, and light switches (yellow and sticky from 50 years of smoke damage). It's a lot of work, but I'm almost to the point where I can begin packing and moving in. Thanks for sharing this progress, it's been motivating!

I used to work for cleaning company mainly doing windows, gutters power washing, wall washing, floors. On wall washing jobs we would use our window mops which are sleeves on t handles. For light cleanings we would use TSP and hot water and cold straight water for rinsing. On heavier cleanings we would use TSP and borax in hot water.

I have found that Awesome works great on walls (and lots of other surfaces). I mix about 1/3 to 1/2 Awesome and then fill with water. I usually use a 1-gallon garden sprayer for big jobs like walls and a spray bottle for smaller jobs. I thoroughly spray an area from ceiling to floor about 4 feet wide. I use old towels to catch the excess and prevent soggy carpet. I use a Mr. Clean sponge mop and a bucket of water. Then scrub and rinse. Awesome is also very good for cleaning really greasy, sticky or gross light fixture covers, glass knick-knacks, etc. I put the items in the kitchen sink, bathtub or outside and spray them down, wait a couple of minutes and rinse. Usually there's no scrubbing involved.
