On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

I was a NATO Seasparrow Missile System Operator and Maintainer on USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 from 2000-2005. This scenario here was a huge fear that we hoped would never happen . Only so much can be done in a mass overwhelming attack, best we would hope is that we fired all the missiles our launchers had and hope they score hits. This situation is still a huge concern today, only incoming threat missiles could end up being Hypersonic.

My understanding is that's the goal of the Energy Directed Systems? they should be able to deal with this type of scenario. It's why the Ford class carriers can produce so much more power from their reactors. When your defence system is travelling at the speed of light then hyper sonic is not really that much of a problem. 186,000 miles per second as opposed to say mach ten which is only 2 miles per second. will be interesting to see what they come up with.
@jonathanpfeffer3716
@jonathanpfeffer3716 6 ай бұрын
@@stanburk7392DEWs are NOT for hypersonics. DEWs absolutely can’t deal with them. They are a LOS weapon that takes sustained time on target to achieve a kill. Any HCM or BGV would be absolutely layered with thermal shielding, and would be absolutely massive on top of that, and like that’s not enough it would also only be in the DEW’s engagement range for 10-15 seconds tops. Even megawatt lasers can’t deal with a threat like that. DEWs ARE super valuable though, just not in that way. They are valuable in that they can provide limitless shootdowns against medium levels of low capability missiles. Think like strikes of 20-30 harpoon-like missiles. And they can handle that literally indefinitely, one after the other. And, then because of that, more high capability SM-6 type missiles can be conserved for the high capability missiles, I.e. BGVs/HCMs/anti-ship ballistic missiles, etc. etc.

Tactical loss, Strategic victory - the attack almost entirely succeeds with all but the carrier sunk, and the carrier itself heavily damaged. However, it has cost a huge number of aircraft to launch the attack, and it has failed to kill the carrier - that carrier may well return in the short future to launch further attacks, probably lumped in with an already existing carrier group, but it's doubtful that Redfor would be able to launch another attack on the same scale, and if they did they'd be facing twice as many F14s!

Sinking a carrier is harder than you think. With Condition Zebra set and compartments isolated and DC parties manned, it would take ALOT of ordnance to sink a 90K ton carrier. When they did a Sinkex on the Guam (LPH-9 at only 20K tons) they hit it with 5" guns, several Harpoons, Mavericks, dozens of MK-84s, a couple Penguins, and it barely listed. It only took 1 MK-48 ADCAP (from an SSBN!) and it was under water in under 6hrs. The SINKEX of the America was quite classified (for obvious reasons) and I am sure NAVSEA learned alot from that.

I think you mean condition Zulu, not zebra. And yeah, a ship closed up for DC is extremely hard to sink. It's not so hard to take it out of the fight though. Sure the hull may still float after multiple missile hits, but the crew have been turned into paint and jam by multiple shockwaves.

@miriamweller812
@miriamweller812 6 ай бұрын
Good luck with that, the missiles got WAY more range than the jets and for a career to be effective you must somehow be in a range in which your airfleet can operatek, what puts you in range of these missiles. If you take something like the Zircon, that's super up to hypersonic, depending on the flight path, not chance to run that down. Can by the way carry a 200kt nuclear warhead, what would likely be used if it comes to such a scenario.

So the Russian Bear unleashed an entire air wing of bombers on a carrier, lost every plane and the air crews therein, and only managed to knock out the escorts, and failed to actually take out the carrier. That's GOT to hurt.
@scolfaqs
@scolfaqs 6 ай бұрын
Was thinking the same thing. US had 13 carriers in 1985 (just a guestimate of when to place this particular battle in history). USSR had 170 Bear and less capable Bison bombers plus 250 more capable Backfire bombers that year. These are the long-range bombers; not all of them were available for anti-ship missions. Seems like that's not going to be enough. They are not going to get as close to the carriers every time to launch missiles. The loss of the escorts is rough, but escort losses will abate as the Tomcats catch the bombers further out and the opposing bomber force is atritted at this high a rate. Wasn't a great result for the fleet, but GS' setup--the Bears getting that close, no other Tomcats shooting down the antiship missiles--was about as favorable for the Soviet forces as they could've hoped for, and the carrier still got away, recovering Tomcats as it retired.

Only thing I would've wanted to try first was the British tactic against V-1 buzz bombs where they placed their wingtip under that of the V-1 and lift it up, making contact with the V-1's wingtip. That threw of the gyro stabilizer in the V-1 and sent them ballistic. I'm certain modern cruise missiles aren't susceptible to that kind of thing but you never know!!

I have heard some analysts say the age of carrier battle groups may be coming to an end due to the sophistication of stealth cruise missiles and how hard it is to defend ships at sea. This was 70s tech in this simulation and even back then they realized the point defense CIWS were not super effective when large numbers of cruise missiles were coming in. And these are slow ones. The new hypersonic stealth ones will be so much more difficult. Directed energy weapons may help but it likely isnt enough in a near-peer naval battle (i.e. China).

Hypersonic missiles are still not at its best. The newest Chinese made ones for example(YJ-21) They managed to launch a couple of maybe 10-11 and only 1 managed to hit a moving target, and that target was moving in the same direction with the same speed. Lets not talk about a Carrier Strike Group, which can change speed, direction, launch decoys, defend itself and what not. You need a refernce? Learn about the YJ-21 + the Hypersonic missiles, ohh and you need some Chinese knowledge or use translater.

Ok, the phrase “hypersonic stealth” might be the funniest one I’ve read recently. There is nothing stealthy about hypersonics. They have an IR signature the size of the sun and can be picked up by BM launch satellites, lol. They’re also huge. Some of the shaping might incidentally provide some RCS reduction. That’s about as far as you can go with that.

Watching the CRAMs open up on the incoming missile swarm... maan that looks like some Star Wars scene, holy crap. I wonder how many cruise missiles it would take to sink an aircraft carrier though. The US had trouble sinking an old one with loads of explosives, used it as torpedo targets before and it wouldn't go down

A lot. Anti-ship missiles are designed to and expected to mission kill for the most part, even for much smaller ships. They detonate above the waterline, and with some exceptions don’t have a crazy huge warhead (in anti-ship terms at least). Even frigates can take multiple missiles and survive. Just look at the USS Stark. For a carrier? You’re gonna have to get a whole lot more than that.

This is the most Tom Cruise you could have done: to slam the Tomcat into the missiles. And at the end, after one of the missile past over all ships in the carrier group, the missile will put down its mask and it is Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Impossible!

Actually you could carry 6 Phoenixes, just don't wanna land back with all 6 on the carrier. But for a surely deploy situation I think it could be a solution.

Some interesting angles showing the streams of CIWS finding the cruise missiles. I have watched similar videos but not with this 'cinematic' quality. By the way, similar results in the other videos I have watched. Missile saturation works for the enemy, dammit!

Honestly probably pretty close to accurate. Both US and USSR knew they could kill a carrier fleet, so the US plan was basically just to make it hurt as much as possible. As I recall, it was estimated to take something like 1/2 to 2/3 of the entire Soviet strategic bomber fleet in casualties to take out a single carrier group. US loses one carrier group, meanwhile USSR loses most of their bomber force. Not a great trade for Russia.
