It isn't the shiny new dreadnoughts the Germans want to test themselves against, oh no, it is the 'weaker' tumblehome ships that draw their ire. Unfortunately I don't think the High Seas Fleet really knew what they were going up against.

My word, that battle was all over the place. I have visions of - at the height of the action - the Admiral staring out impassively at the ships going in all directions and all the torpedoes zipping past in the water, and going "Gentlemen, I think my work here is done. I'll be in my cabin, let me know if anything happens."

The Battle of Benghazi, Part 2 Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMVIX, 9 September 1909 A Muddled Middle Meanwhile V-15 and V-5 were attempting another torpedo run at the Béarn and were sunk in quick succession. V-15 lost 111 of her 120 man crew, V-5 lost 106. Most of the Zerstörer in front of her were gone with V-2 soon to follow with 110 of her 120 and then the Gepanzerkreuzter could be seen led by Lützow. A division of three Zerstörer tried to cut between the battle line and the Gepanzerkreuzter. Magon was using her speed to circle the enemy’s flank. The three Zerstörer led by V-3 aimed at the battle line cut for the gap between Tonnere and Dévastation. Closing ahead of Dévastation, V-3 launched torpedoes, but Dévastation turned and slipped the gap. V-3 broke away leaving V-22 and V-18 in the arch of the battle line, and in ironic turnabout V-18 took a Cuirassé’s torpedo. V-22 sank first with 112 of her 120 man crew. V-18 sank a minute later with 61 of her 64 man crew. Then V-3 sank with 117 of her 120 man crew. Magon finally got an engagement, two Zerstörer, the V-12 and V-13, were covering the back of the German fleet when Magon closed on them and attempted a torpedo launch on V-13. Cosmao still have five Zerstörer haunting her with three Leichter Kreuzer again trying to close. Magon had brushed past her two Zerstörer, sinking V-13 with 29 of her crew as they abandoned the ship because of the incoming torpedo, and was heading for the sterns of the Leichter Kreuzer. At least two hid in smoke. But now the six Gepanzerkreuzter were uncovered and the battle line could target them. Cosmao sank the V-27 with 80mm fire, sending the 900 ton Zerstörer to the bottom with 109 of her 120 man crew. Béarn finally broke the circling pattern of her movements and turned hard to port to bring the battle line in parallel with Saxony and the Gepanzerkreuzter. This put V-12 on her starboard side. Bent in a horseshoe, the battle line engaged Saxony. Magon was on the tail of the Leichter Kreuzer and engaging Regensburg. Regensburg sank with all but one of her 394 man crew. Magon was now past the Leichter Kreuzer and on the Zerstörer haunting Cosmao. And not too soon as Cosmao ran into a torpedo spread but fortunately the two hits were duds. Cosmao now targeted the V-10, hiding under smoke and loaded with torpedoes. V-17 had gathered a squadron of Zerstörer to try and lead a run at Belliqueuse at the back of the battle line but got cut down with 155mm shells. V-17 sank with 30 of her 120 man crew as her magazines exploded. V-31 sank with 57 of her 64 man crew just as V-17 took a torpedo meant for Tonnere. So focused was V-32 on hitting Tonnere that she missed Dévastation sweeping in past her starboard bow and getting two torpedoes into V-32 at short range. V-32 took 11 casualties and broke off from the battle. Tonnere dodged V-32’s torpedoes. Magon had finally gotten up to Cosmao and they were now ordered to withdraw after having sunk the Leichter Kreuzer Danzig and Regensburg and at least three Zerstörer. Cont’d

A way to overcome the lack of tonnage for 100k+ invasions is this: Have a fleet of Armoured Cruisers, Pre-Dreadnoughts or whatever, waiting in the wings to be extra tonnage, and ONLY bee extra tonnage. This fleet of 'Armed Troop Transports' should have the following: 1. 8-10 vessels with a combined tonnage exceeding 100k tons. Leave on Limited until needed for an Invasion. 2. The ships should be slow, have low maintenance costs, probably low-tech, but maxxed out tonnage; accomplish this in whatever way you can. If you want to roleplay, give them Spacious quarters to simulate them carrying Army troops to feed into the invasion. 3. Armament should be relatively small main guns and lots of light secondaries. These transports should be able to fend off TBs, DDs, maybe some CLs, but they should run at the first sign of trouble. 4. A couple small picket vessels to deal with subs and stall enemy surface units while the transports get away. Hope this helps anyone itching to acquire some colonies!

Battle of Cam Ranh Bay Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMVIX, 23 August 1909 The Normandie, lead of her Cuirassé du 2ème rang class, from the Keelung Station navale on Formosa, joined the Tricolore class Croiseur Léger Tage from the Fort Bayard Base navale régionale in Kwang-Chou-Wan, to escort a convoy of four Méduse class 83.6mm armed Navires de transport through the South China Sea east of Cam Ranh Bay. They were attacked by two Graudenz Class Leichter Kreuzer of the Kaiserliche Marine, the Stuttgart and the Pillau armed with a one single turret 180.5mm gun, four single turret 137.2mm guns, some smaller caliber guns, and four underwater torpedo tubes. Normandie spotted funnel smoke of ships closing fast from the south-west. She and Tage moved to investigate. They sighted the two German Kreuzer and prepared for battle, still closing until they got into range. Then Tage turned and launched her five starboard torpedoes. Tage was getting hits with her 155mm and 80mm guns, and even L'Indomptable got an 83.6mm hit that destroyed a 137.2mm gun turret on Stuttgart. This set off Stuttgart’s 137.2mm and 180.5mm powder magazines, launching her turrets into the air. Normandie got into range and got two 300mm hits on Stuttgart right after L'Indomptable’s hit but before the powder magazines exploded. Tage turned her guns on Pillau. Normandie fired her 80mm guns on Stuttgart to finish her. Both sides began to circle each other d’soleil, keeping out of each other’s torpedo range. Finally Normandie was able to get 300mm hits on Pillau and sink her with 543 of her 633 man crew. Stuttgart was still trying to fight. Finally Normandie got a hit aft with her 300mm gun that flooded Stuttgart to her amidships. A few 80mm hits from Tage and the bulkheads caved on Stuttgart. She sank with 563 of her 633 man crew. Normandie suffered one casualty. Tage took 10 and picked up 160 German survivors. It was from the damage control officer of the Stuttgart that we learned that it was the Méduse class 83.6mm armed Navire de transport L'Indomptable’s 83.6mm hit on one of Stuttgart's 137.2mm guns which set off that gun's powder magazine and triggered another power explosion in the 180.5mm magazine. This did not sink Stuttgart but it did cripple her for the rest of the battle.

@@akrillalex6810 Acknowledged. Agreed. Agreed. Most of my tactics, doctrines, and strategies are cheesy. This one doesn't make for great content. No apologies. 😁 Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. The frequency and angle of "glancing" torpedoes not exploding are far too high. High angle torps don't dud often enough. Turning towards or away greatly increases survivability even if the torps don't miss. This is why I give my ships unbalanced rudders and flip torp avoidance on and off during this kind of fight. Leaving avoidance on too long can also cause the formation to disintegrate, because the ships will continue "avoiding" even after the torpedoes are no longer a threat. Agreed. Unfortunately, weapon control is often overridden or counterproductive in this game due to target switching and other issues. Absolutely, and everything before the word BUT .... Doesn't really matter.
