Viewers asked us to shoot at Flex Seal after seeing the Flex Seal slug video. Will it help absorb the fragmentation from the bullets? Please keep the ideas coming! We do try to read all comments and reply to as many as possible. Please try to keep your comments clean- kids and ladies read them too. I was told by YT that cuss words in the comment section are a negative. I don't have enough time to sort through the comments held in limbo with cuss words in them.

So spalling is when a projectile or blast wave impact an armor plating causing the opposite side of the impact to break apart and become fragmentation. The effect that you were trying to stop is primary fragmentation, the projectile breaks apart into smaller and sometimes more hazardous pieces that continue to have down range effects. Go forth with new knowledge!
@otetechie
@otetechie 5 жыл бұрын
1BoneChip1 It’s spalling. Spall means to break up into chips or pieces. If the bullet shatters, the smaller pieces are spall. If a DU round punches through amor, the shards or amor and of the round are both spall.
@1BoneChip1
@1BoneChip1 5 жыл бұрын
Negative on your last ghost rider, although you are quite right on my spelling error. When it comes to ordnance the act of a projectile coming from together is fragmentation. Spall by the oxford dictionary is as you described and you are correct in referring to the small pieces from the armor as spall. That being said spall is strictly limited to the effects generated by the armor receiving some kinetic energy transfer from an impact or blast wave. When in doubt, 60 series out!

@@otetechie Incorrect:Spalling and spallation both describe the process of surface failure in which spall is shed from a larger body of material. Technically spalling would be the plate shedding metal. Even the plate manufacturers get it wrong, and keep misinforming the public.

you’re correct. Everyone commonly misuses the terms. Splatter/splash is when the projectile does not penetrate an object. The round breaks apart and takes the path of least resistance creating bullet splash or splatter. Spalling is when the projectile penetrates an object and the material the projectile penetrates is projected forward creating spalling.

Our armor isn’t rubber coated (line-x etc). Our plates are compressed ceramic w Kevlar on top followed by some padding on top. It’s rated to stop a 7.62mm M-80 ball. Made by Ceradyne, inc. We tested it in Iraq during the 1st deployment and it would stop 3 M16 (5.56mm) rounds. After 3 it was toast, but any round bigger than that you better hope that you only get it once (or not at all of course lol) or get lucky if you get hit twice! Also, we had to change out our plates every so often because the integrity of the ceramic would easily get compromised because the corners of the plates would start to crack and crumble and spread towards the middle of the plate.

MWB Gaming If you’re getting hit more than that you’re doing something wrong, and you’ll probably be out of commission anyways. I know a guy who took an AK round to the chest in Afghanistan. The ceramic is a byproduct of the military's obsession with Level IV. While it sounds great and all, Level III is sufficient for nearly all tasks (besides stopping AP, but true AP still isn't particularly prevalent due to cost), and most have MUCH better multi-hit capabilities. It's a bit of a pick your poison type thing.

Bullet fragmentation is the bullet breaking up; spalling is when metal on the reverse side of the armor breaks off without the projectile penetrating. Both can be bad in the context of a chest plate, but anti-spalling is particularly important on tanks, because the energy required to create spalling is roughly constant with armor thickness; against heavy armor it’s easier to design projectiles to create spalling that kills the crew than to design projectiles that penetrate.

The technical therm is indeed "spalling". "Spall" is something that breaks off something solid usually due to impact. Also applied to mining (spalling ore = breaking it into smaller pieces) and armored warfare. The ethymology of "splashing" reminisce about something liquid. As in, splashing canvas with paint.

spalling is when the opposite side of a plate from the impact point fragments due to the impact on the other side. For example in ww1 tank crews wore chain mail masks because even though rifle bullets couldn't penetrate the armor, the brittle steel plate used would send metal splinters into the fighting compartment when impacted on the outside by a high velocity projectile. The interiors of some more recent tanks are lined with kevlar to prevent this.

So, random thought: What about homemade composite armor? Take a 1/2" deep steel cooking tray, fill it with 5-10mm alumina polishing balls, then fill the remaining air inside it with molten aluminum (or a structurally sound bismuth-tin mix, if you don't have a forge setup, though it's more expensive and heavy than aluminum and all) Keeping the alumina in with say, chickenwire fencing or a screen clipped to the sides of the cooking tray while the molten metal fills it, then after the metal hardens coat the surface with spray-on bedliner. Should be less than $100 total for the materials, and it would be interesting to see how it would hold up vs rifle rounds. (given the principle should be similar to that used in some composite tank armors)

Composite armour is not that effective against kinetic rounds at low volumes. It's instead extremely effective against chemical rounds.
@SCComega
@SCComega 5 жыл бұрын
True, however I'm still curious how it might perform, given the hardness of alumina and all. Furthermore, it would be a higher volume plate vs most level 3 AR500 armors, at about double the overall thickness, (steel backing plus a half inch of materials) if it's using 5mm alumina material it should stack to three-four layers in the tray, plus the metal between, should lead to both round deformation and friction breaking)

Hey guys, just noticed you’re up over a million subscribers now, you’ve come such a long way since I found you a couple years ago (before you even had a patreon and were wondering if you could afford to continue making videos). So happy to see every time a new one gets published. You can really tell you guys enjoy doing this stuff. Please keep being genuine as your channel grows! Great content will always be more important than fancy editing or gimmicky product placements like so many other channels do now. All the best from Ontario :)

Crazy thought: would the steel and flex-seal stay together better if your steel was grooved like a non-stick p.... Oh, you thought of that. Yeah, probably very hard to cut a fine pattern of grooves two ways into a hardened steel plate, but I think it'd: 1) Allow the coating to hang on better under the impacts and 2) cause the fragmetns to bounce *out* rather than splashing *across* the surface.

I shot hand guns competitively for years. Montrose Colorado used to have a competition called the "Steel Challenge" where you faced off against an opponent and had to drop steel plates. First to the stop plate dropping won. I carried my chair, gun bag and ammo in a little red wagon like kids use. At the end of a day of shooting it would have a LOT of lead and copper fragments in it. And it was sitting WAY back from the targets/firing line. During practive once one of my 45 cal, 230 grain round nose all lead bullets splattered against the plate, bounce back and a dime to nickle sized flat piece of lead struck my buddies wife in the front of the calf. Just hit flat and stuck there. We pulled it off. Slight burn from the heat and painful but she was still able to compete. Lead hitting steel isn't safe at close distance (up to 20+feet even). I'm thinkng the cloth/other material of the plate carriers help mitigate the splatter. Love to see a video on that.

Glad someone tested this. I was curious about it, too. I do have a suggestion if you're willing to try. Like you said, rough up surface with burgundy scotchbrite or 320 sand paper and clean it with degreaser. But, mix a good amount of sand in with the flex seal as an aggregate. Then, of course, shoot that b**** with a 12ga slug!

It's always best to not change any of the variables when doing stuff like this. When you went from sheetrock to cardboard that will affect results. Also would have been great to have one more piece of sheetrock one the top of the plate to mimic a chin. I suspect if you placed just two layers of kevlar with your flex seal you would achieve the results you want. I would recommend sanding or grinding the ar plate to give the flex sewl something to grab onto.
