Today we test how Flex Tape performs when repairing a bicycle inner tube with a hole or tear. Can it hold? Find out in this video! The flex tape inner tube test results can also give us a good idea of how well a repair to an above ground swimming pool vinyl liner would hold up if it's subjected to stretching.

@@wmenghi I’m just curious: have you tried it like a patch, in the instance where patch material may not be available, & use rubber cement? I’d be interested in knowing if it would work in that scenario, or if the cement and/or glue/material interacts negatively to the mix of adhesives.

Finally someone done real video,these tapes are trash,i prefer to create own patches of old inner tube scatch with sand papper to thin patch and cut edges on 45 degree for better catch glue ,great video stay safe

Interesting, I did not expect that result but it is what it is and a good discovery/heads up. I certainly did not expect it to work on pressurized pipes but I though it might work on a tire; well at least in a pinch.

I’ve used gorilla glue and a shopping bag to repair my tire. This would work if done the correct way. Yeah cleaning and scuffing is all good but the way you apply the patch is sketchy.

Not a fair test of the tape to withstand pressure in fixed diameter pipes ie plumbing to withstand pressure. vulcanized rubber is expanding when air is pumped into it and the material differentially expands in response causing failure. Retest on a regular pipe. I am not affiliated with whatever company this is but tests as the one you did do not apply to fixed diameter pipes. It may fail but a test has to be done to ascertain that fact not on an assumption based on faulty reasoning. Obviously plumbing pipes should be replaced by plumbing pipes to assure non leakage which can be costly if a major leak floods the structure. An engineer reasons.

U have to seal the hole first then put more then one piece on it for it to hold I got it on my tire for my moped and it did work all you have to do is put glue on then let that dry then add the tape then u will be fine

This tape is super useful around the shop. However, this along with (almost) any other consumer grade adhesive will not stick to vulcanized rubber with any sort of integrity. Still probably shouldn't patch a high pressure line with it but it will most certainly adhere more aggressively to other materials. Thank you for all the work you put into your reviews, sincerely. Also should look in to what the adhesive part is comprised of for example a epoxy type adhesive so the tape flexes to apply but once the adhesive dries I doubt that it will be very flexible I'd have to believe that it would work better on a leaking PVC type pipe or a leaky rust spot on a old metal pipe and of all things it's a temporary fix !

it will only work on small punctures not cuts unless you stitch the cut first then patch it.

A test on a garden hose would be a great test for water pressure butt I would wrap the tape all the way around the hose onto the tape itself.

joetri1970 Would never last long. the pressure would find it's way under the tape and out, especially if the hose is very warm in the sun.

I have already tried this with a damaged hose. Works fine when hose does not have a nozzle on it. Once you place a nozzle on hose and then start to spray water, the flex tape will fail due to the water pressure and actually blows a hole in the tape.

And this is why they make special patches for bike tires, patches that form a chemical bond with the rubber and aren't just adhesive. Good video though. I agree with others that testing on non-expanding items might be a nice video to see. It would be interesting to see how it works on various hoses on my boat. But i"m not going to be poking holes in any of them to find out :-)

Is that the rim that your inner tube was on when the leak happened? From the leak's position I'd guess that you have an over-tightened spoke. There might be another leak now the same distance from the valve stem unless you got lucky and re-installed the tube in the original orientation. Check the rim tape for a spoke or spokes coming through. Thanks for the heads-up on the flex tape hack not being effective. 👍

So you have a sharp spoke poking through if so the test is not measuring its air-tightness but its ability to withstand a sharp object poking through.

No good. It dries very hard, and the tube cannot flex, it ends up pulling, but maybe OK for an emergency.

It's supposed to be so strong. I watched a video of some young kid showing how he puts super glue and paper over a hole in a bike tube. I tried it and been riding my Mt bike for days with just super glue and paper. Who knew lol

Under air pressure in something like an inner tube the two expand at different rates and will not work for that reason. Flex tape is demonstrated clearly in various surfaces. Nowhere does it say it'll work for inner tubes.

If anyone's interested in using a DIY inner tube patch, I have one that's been working for 2+ years. It's a piece of pleather (donated from a cheap, old, beloved jacket) with E-6000 as the adhesive (stays flexible when fully cured). The surface of the inner tube was prepped by roughing it up w/ a little sandpaper, then wiping it down with acetone (also could've used rubbing alcohol). After that, just stick on the patch. I waited an hour before inflating the tube (just to be safe...but maybe would've been OK before that), and it's stayed inflated, ever since. I just top off the air every couple weeks. Speaking of E-6000, that can be used to repair holes in inflatable pools, as well. You can apply the adhesive, then put a duct tape patch over it. A more flexible patch material can be used, as well, but the adhesive is doing the actual work. The patch just helps to flatten and spread the adhesive while it cures. Hope that helps someone out there!

Nice! :) I only discovered your channel maybe like 4 - 6 months ago (I think?), but glad all your viewers know how cool this adhesive is. Have you tried the FIX-ALL ADHESIVE that's sold at dollar stores (for my area, 99 Cents Only store & Dollar Tree)? I like it even MORE than E-6000. I've had some fails w/ E-6000, where the FAA gripped firmly, and whatever was joined together, remained so. I haven't tried it as a tire patch yet, but I'd imagine it would work well.

I love e-6000 glue,it's helped me with so many thing's,and also used to fix my bicycle tubes,not for patch repair but for the valve damage when develop a tear,from the tire moving on the rim.I fix everything with it.

I used some today to patch a split in a 500 gallon steel tank on a trailer before picking up a load of waste milk for the pigs. It held up fine, with no leaks. However, I had to clean the surface very well first. I tried it wet before & it didn’t stick at all.

The most reliable are the rubber patches with rubber cement, after roughing up the repair area.

I've used this tape on snow tubes and pool liner multiple times successfully to repair smaller more natural pin holes. This slice isn't very realistic. I would like to see the filmmaker try this again on a more reasonable hole.

If the pool liner is fully stretched BEFORE applying, it will work. This product does extremely poorly on anything that stretches.

This was an incredible demonstration. I've been plagued with THREE flats in TWO days and as I patched yet another hole thought to myself, "There has to be a better way." I wondered if Flex-Tape could be used for this very purpose. Your experiment here answered that question. I wonder, however, if a larger swatch of tape was used, would the result be the same? Suppose you used a long enough piece of tape to wrap around the tubing, say twice, -- sort of like a tourniquet -- would the tape had still failed?

So.. I am curious because as you applied the tape to a FLAT tube.. and all I could think of is.. when you put a bandaid on your knee and if you’re standing up.. then when you bend your knee it stretches and comes off. What if you aired up the tube, placed the patch over the hole, deflated it and then stuffed the tube into the tire and re pumped.. would that work. So. I’m going to attempt. If it doesn’t work oh well, just get a new tube, if it does. Miracle and it’s fixed and future fixes. Will update once I’ve done it :)

Yes! My thought too. Actually, E6000 and Gorilla Extreme Duct Tape will repair a hole in a tube...He started with a rip larger than id want to repair. There comes a time to just buy a new tube.

I think that the tire should on been inflated enough when it was inserted onto the rim that it was inflated enough for not being pinched! Faulty repair ... Also you should of reinforced the rim with a tire liner so the tire spokes were secured.

The cut was to large for that small patch... "Patch to small" A regular tube patch that size would most likely failed also... The flex tape needed to go all the way around the tube and the full width for this to work...

I thought it might be the stretching that was damaging the patch. 3M makes this stuff nick-named F18 tape. It was briefly copy-catted for an as-seen-on-TV product. I hear this stuff (the 3M brand stuff) works extremely well. I think it's self bonding silicone tape. It only works in applications where it can wrap around itself like tubing and pipes though (does work when wet) If you can turn the water off, 3M UHB Tape would probably work extremely well.

You cannot use contact cement and a patch to repair a tire Ben is a special Vulcanizing glue

@@electronicsNmore for any type of tire tube repair the cement used needs to be a Vulcanizing cement not just a contact rubber cement will not work because it does not burn into the rubber hence the cold Vulcanizing cement glue

I feel like this is misleading... The inner tube stretches significantly, while the other mediums you mentioned (Pool lining, Plumbing, ect.) are fixed in place. A video with a comparison of the examples you mentioned would have been great evidence, rather than comparing apples and oranges blindly.

Pipes don’t stretch! Nothing will fix a cut in a bike tube ESPECIALLY one that is about an inch long . For a normal puncher I’m sure this product would work fine. I’ve been using HD ducttape for years as a patch . Also I have never gat a puncture on the inside of the tube only on the outside where it meets the tread. Hey hey hey back up guy you’re doing wrong, I’ll show ya! Hold my beer!

It says right on the packaging you need to wait at least 24 hours for the flex tape to cure. You shouldn't have inflated the tube right away. Not a proper test of the product.

@@electronicsNmore Negative they both say on the packaging may take 24 hours to cure and increases strength over time. I bought both the other day and used a piece of the tape to repair a gash in the side wall of my bike tire. I only let it set for 12 hours then rode on it for 80 miles, held up great. You applied the tape then immediately expanded the tube of course it failed. You should redo the test let it set for 24 hours then inflate the tube and see if it holds.

@@ericwebster9520 Wrong, not on the package I had. LOL. It's tape! As a matter of fact they claim you can use it on pipes, boats, hoses, and turn on the pressure. You actually think a person is going to wait 24 hours after an "Emergency" repair? I think not. It's designed for TEMPORARY repairs, not permanent.

that's actually my problem with patches, once gets hot they peel, no matter how good they are or how good you apply them, they just come out, actually looking for vulcanizing glue that can be activated by heat in order to, again vulcanize the patch and make it one with the inner tube

First of all air and water are two two different sicknesses so the pressure coming out of the same hole would be different and you should know that but what they're doing is rapping it over itself creating to seal and already stretching it over the water pipe you're not doing that over an inner tube you're putting it on loose and then it stretches and then comes apart two different applications two different ways okay do you understand so it would work on water pipe but it's not going to work on it deflated air mattress or rubber because it stretches and it's not made the same so the other way to do it would be balkanize it heat it up first stretch it then put it on

It won't work on a pressurized water pipe. Drain pipes ONLY. In time the pressurized water will find it's way under the tape and out the side. Unfortunately you need to learn that the hard way. Did you even read the label where it says for automotive and marine use? Does not sound like it.

@@unclejay609 As long as the liner doesn't stretch over time, and the surface is clean before applying, maybe. You need to read the product reviews, they're not good.
