Join us for part one of our long trip home from Pensacola in my club Cessna 172 Skyhawk N80182. Blasting off into a low layer with plenty of IMC the entire way. Strong headwinds caused a diversion for us.

I love having my instrument rating. And I agree: hand flying in IMC is a lot more work than in VMC.

If there's one thing you captured that gave me the biggest crackup for my entire week... It was ATC saying, "We don't just have random sensors floating around in the atmosphere...."

Yeah I was laughing so hard. It was a tad rude but winds aloft is only a forecast and probably not something that ATC even looks at.

Code yellow! It gets worse with altitude when you are in an unpressurized airplane! The code yellow pressure is 9 times the square root of the altitude times the distance from a suitable airport. You crack me up! 😁🛫

No, but I remember him! I flew with Bill Manning & Joe McElmurry. Bill was just retiring (Master Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate) when I was a brand-new Ensign at NAS Memphis, and we've kept in touch over all the years. Now I'm a LCDR, retired 23 years ago.@@AnotherPilot1

@@FromSagansStardust I flew the Citabria they rented out for awhile. We got a ramp check from Bill Voss for a Maintenance Issue and it didn't make them too happy. A latch spring didn't engage the oil stick cover on the cowl and it was bouncing up and down when I taxied up from a flight.

I learned to fly in high school in the early 70’s I worked in electronics on medical equipment. And the company provided me a Company car and a Grumman Tiger and later a BE 55. In 1983 I was hired to sit in the right seat of Lear jets and Falcon 20’s. On one trip in the Lear 25 I pulled out my camera. The Captain did not like seeing it and said cameras can tell on you and get you into trouble possibly . He said I could take a few pictures but don’t bring it again. He is no longer with us and would have a fit seeing KZfaq today. 20 years later I was looking through old photos and found the photo of the panel . And yes he was right at FL 410 his Altimeter was set at the departure airport local setting. Mine was on 29.92 because I ran the 18,000 ft check list altimeter 29.92 air conditioner off. 🤯🛫

Yeah if you are worried about the camera telling on you, then you aren’t holding yourself to a high enough standard. Sure we all make mistakes from time to time, the cameras are a great way to debrief that.

@@DoubleE_Aviation I agree! As a former examiner for Typing Rating on Falcon Jet’s 20 and the 2000 and the slowtation. I recorded training flights but not check rides. I wanted the client to feel as comfortable as possible. While doing steep bank turns as an example and the potential failee exceed a limitation and I did not see it. It did not happen! 😀🛫

Gotcha, i ve actually had ATC tell me it looks like they are using runway XX over there, no traffic between you and blah, switch to advisory. However that is at an airport below a Bravo shelf. @@garygazman3827

Another fine example of proper ADM! So many airplanes have failed to maintain adequate ground clearance due to too much air in the fuel tanks! And of course code yellow is another good reason to find terra firm-a 🤣🛫

Yes we have a very accurate fuel totalizer but absolutely no reason to push it. My bladder was very thankful and part 2 headwind was a little stronger than forecast so I’m glad I had more fuel

Hey , great video. Impressed with your hand flying in IMC. Calm and I don’t see a lot of Instrument scanning , but that may be because of Camera Angie ?I have dual G5s and a GFC500 AP in my Cherokee. I typically Hand fly at least half of a trip and let the AP drive the other half. Anyway , I noticed at about 7:20 , you open the menu on your G5 (AI) and turn the knob. Just curious what you were adjusting in the G5? I hardly ever open the menu as I can preselect everything (Altitude , HDG etc ) from either the G5 knob or the GFC507 box. Only thing I can think of is you were setting Altitide since you don’t have the GFC500?
@DoubleE_Aviation
@DoubleE_Aviation 7 ай бұрын
I have to set the altitude by opening the menu on the top g5 since we have no autopilot it’s really just an easy way for me to remember assigned altitudes. I appreciate the good words!
